ICCCT2006: SCMODS' assesment of every teams chances

Who would you back to score a 50 if Pakistan were suddenly to play tomorrow? Afridi or Razzaq?

For me Razzaq all the way, and he can bowl really well. Afridi is probably Pakistan's best option as a spinner, but theres no way I would want him selected as a batting allrounder.

And have

If you recall, Razzaq use to be a Full-time Bowler who came after Wasim Akram  ... I still remember his amazing bowling that tied the game against Srilanka (can't remember when it was). His bowling was described as the most dangerous bowler for Pakistan by Sachin Tendulkar in an interview in 2003. Although his bowling has fallen, he has showed character, and has the ability to change his game at any point. Although he can still be unstoppable if he gets going with the ball, he isn't the most dangerous.. Afridi though can take out crucial wickets (which is why I think he is still in the team). His bowling has gotten better, since he started to vary his bowling. What Woolmer has done is he has let Afridi play his natural game which brung many good knocks recently from him, unlike Miandad who kept on telling him to defend, and usually his playing style was not seen.

He slogs from ball one cause that's his job.....he isn't just a blind slogger.
Pakistan 6/27, 40 overs to bat and 4.5 an over required...

11.1 Afridi goes for the pull and the ball goes through to the keeper
11.2 another swing and a miss ...well outside the off stump
11.3 SIX, short...ball sails over the midwicket fence
11.4 FOUR
11.5 ...good length delivery outside the off stump, another Afridi swing fails to make contact - was nowhere near the line of that one
11.6 3 runs, clipped away off the pad
12.1 OUT, ...pitched on middle and off...makes room and swings hard...bat was nowhere near the line of the ball...ball hits the pad...loud appeal is upheld

Intelligent innings that, although it's above par considering he'd scored 83 runs at 6.91 in his last 15 games before this joke of an effort.

Afridi is just an idiot when it comes to batting i'm afraid. If ever there was a situation when he had to use his brain and bat for consolidation, then today was that time to do it. In typical Afridi fashion though, he swung at everything and proved definitivley that he is a mindless, brainless slogger.

How can you justify blaming Afridi? Afridi is in the team because of the way he plays. If he slogged a 40 ball 100 everyone would be saying how great he is. He's at number 8 to get some runs late in the innings when needed. The top five are more to blame. When you're 20/5 you have no chance.

Did I say I was blaming him for today's defeat? I was just using it as an example to prove what a brainless fool he is. In fairness though, the other 10 Pakistan batsmen where brainless fools today as well.

For the first time in a long time Matt and me agree on something! Shahid Afridi is indeed a mindless slogger and wouldn't make any team, not even in the local leagues if I was the selector. Cricket is a very tactical game, and for tactics you need a brain. Afridi doesn't have one.

Mindless slogger. There we go again.
He isn't in the team to recover them. His role isn't to ressucate them from 20/5.
He is like a lottery. Plays the exact same way. If he is in good form, a good day, he'll hit a 100. Everyone will praise him on his talent, ann his agressive intent, the way he took the attack to the bowling to save them. He gets out doing the exact same thing, and you call him an idiot?
It can't be easy being Afridi. Hence the fact that he needs people to have faith in him for him to do well, be himself. Such as Woolmer and Inzy. That explains his recent sucesses, bar the poor run of form of late.
And his bowling hasn't suffered at all. He is still bowling well. Probably not suited to bouncy, pacy wickets, but still bowling well nonetheless.

No matter what you say, i'll always think he's a mindless, brainless idiot. And if the Pakistan selectors pick him again then they are also mindless, brainless idiots. He's a complete liability and having a single figure average in his last 20 ODI's is pathetic. I fail to see how that is worthy of a place in the team.

So, you go by stats and not by talent?

Then the Aussies are dumb by sticking to Warne. Clarke is a more than capable spinner on his own.

And choosing Sreesanth over Irfan? C'mon, Irfan has better stats!

Afridi has talent, probably more than anyone else in the country, hence he is in the team.

And what good is talent without having the brain to use it?

If he's so talented then why hasn't he contributed anything meaningful to the side for ages?

It's like saying a man has a good talent for fixing cars yet he never uses it, so should his employer not fire him because 'he does it sometimes but just not all the time'?

Whether he has talent or not isn't my debate, my point is that he's brainless.
