World XI draw level with vital win
Ricky Ponting took man of the match with his 98 and 78.
The World XI have won the 2nd Test at Colombo SSC with a 112 run win. Ricky Ponting took Man of the Match for his scores of 78 and 98 respectively some other contenders were Dale Steyn for his 5 wickets in the Sri Lankan second innings and Mahela Jaywardena for his all round performance of 5 wickets and his 69 runs. The Sri Lankans look in good touch after their overwhelming perfromance against England. The World XI are still bonding together and look like a better team every day they still have to play Pakistan on this tour who could provide a lot of problems for them.
Graeme Smith walks off after falling two short of his hundred.
Sri Lanka elected to bowl first with the some cloud cover offering some swing for the bowlers. They duly used that swing as after only 28 runs debutant Lokurahchi bowled Matthew Hayden. Matthew Hayden played as if there wasnt going to be any swing and the ball swung back and bowled him through the gate. Pietersen was the next man to go 31 runs later he had 9 off 34 deliveries but Murali was causing him alot of trouble and he was fishing for the ball and was caught at slip. Jacques Kallis was the next man to go by the captain himself with Sri Lanka taking crucial wickets at crucial times. Ponting and Smith then put on 80 for the 4th wicket and eventually the World XI were all out for 289.

Ricky Ponting picked up 3 wickets in the Sri Lankan innings,
From one captain to another, Ricky Ponting produced a stunning bowling performance to pick up 3 wickets and figures of 9.1 overs, 5 maidens, 17 runs and 3 wickets. Michael Vandort once again produced another spectacular innings for Sri Lanka, 83 off 210 balls. He made the bowlers toil for his wicket untill Matthew Hoggard eventually got one to just hold its line to the left hander and he kniced the ball to keeper Brendon McCullum. Vandort was the only Sri Lankan player to score over 31 with 3 players getting into the 30's. Quickies Brett Lee and Dale Steyn both chipped in with 2 wickets each and then Bond, Panesar and Matthew Hoggard picked up 1 each.

Ricky Ponting was the 2nd player in the match to be dismissed for 98
The World XI produced a good batting display in helpful conditions with Ricky Ponting the second player to reach 98. Brett Lee showed he can be classed as an all rounder after another excellent score this time of 43 sheperding the tail reall well to get partnerships of 36 and 37 with Matthew Hoggard and Monty Pansear respectively. Jaques Kallis hit another superb 50 aswell. Murali and Mahela Jaywardene both took 3 wickets of the World XI and Vaas and Malinga took both took wickets aswell.

Dale Steyn produced a stunning spell of bowling
Dale Steyn took 5 wickets for the World XI as Sri Lanka fell 112 runs short of the win. Jaywardene and Sangakarra looked as if they might take Sri Lanka to the series but Dale Steyn produced a wonderful in swinging yorker to get rid of Jaywardene and then Brett Lee got Sangakarra with a wonderfull back of the length ball that kept low and stuck Kumar in front. Prasanna Jaywardene chipped in with 25 as the young wicketkeeper showed he is an all round talent.

On 5 searingly hot days at the start of a New Year, Sri Lanka showed that this year could prove to be a very dominant year for the Sri Lankans. The Pitch at Kandy looked very good for batting and any team that one the toss would bat. So it was no surprise when skipper Ponting chose to Bat, Man of the Match went to Mahela Jayawardene for his 105 and 2 wickets .
Pietersen was one of 4 Wickets for Chaminda Vaas
Kevin Pietersen and Graeme Smith batted very well to take the World XI to a score of 291 all out. Surprisingly the two batted together for a partnership of 105 the only partnership of over 50. The known battles these two of had before looked to be shoved to one side for this tour as they battled in the heat. Something Pietersen might not be used to 
. For the Sri Lankans Lokurachi looks to be a brilliant succesor to Chaminda Vaas in years to come. Troubling each batsmen with his variations of pace and swing.

Matthew Hoggard picked up 5 wickets in the Sri Lankan first innings.
Mahela Jawaywardene and the Re Called Russel Arnold both hit centuries in the Sri Lanka innings. Even though neither of them batted together. Arnold and Murali produced a very good partnership of 46 with Arnold sheperding the strike very well. Both openers Tharanga and Vandort both went Cheaply. Bond clean bowled Tharanga and Pietersen took an excellent catch off Hoggard to get rid of Vandort. Hoggard was the pick of the World XI bowlers taking 5 for 68 with an economy rate of just under 2. Shane Bond picked up 3 wickets aswel and Dan Vettori picking up 2.

Ricky Ponting scored an excellent 130
Ricky Ponting took the attack to the Sri Lankan bowlers as he scored his 130 off 150 balls. Greame smith also hit a handy 73 as the World XI's batsmen looked to have hit fine form. Matthew Hayden failed for the second time in the match, The first one he got a start and then in this innings he never really got going. Kevin Pietersen got a start and then fell to the doosra as he looked to be at his fluid best. The wickets were widely spread with each bowler taking a wicket.

Total: 208/5 Overs: 66.1 Run Rate: 3.14 Extras: 4Needing 205 the World XI didnt look like having much of a chance and would need a mixture of accurate quick bowling and some excellent fielding to win this series. It started well for them when Hoggard got Tharanga caught behind for only 2 but the other batsmen all looked solid. Overall 5 wickets fell Bond and Hoggard getting two each and Brett Lee picking up just the one. Chamara Kapugedera played an excellent knock as he was the anchor in the Sri Lankan innings with youg wicket keeper Prasanna Jaywardene supporting him. On the stroke of 3 o clock Kapugedera hit the winning runs and the Sri Lankan balcony was exstatic and they all ran onto the pitch to congratulate the batsmen and shake hands with the World XI. The two teams will now face each other in a series of ODI's. This will be tightly contested and the World Xi will want to leave Sri Lanka with at least one piece of SilverWare.
