My laptop is doing something very fishy. I am not sure if I have some sort of virus. Basically everything has gone really really slow. IE or Firefox crashes nearly all the time and is really slow loading up pages. The mouse begins to lag and when I am typing it also is lagging. I'll be listening to music or playing a game and it will just become too slow. I have scanned my comp with AVG and Windows Defender and it says there is nothing around. However, for some reason AVG won't update and it is now out of date.

I really am unsure what could be causing this??? Please help :upray

Was it normal a few days ago? If so then go Start > Accesories > System Tools > System Restore. This will restore the settings of your PC back to how it was a few days ago. WARNING: Will delete anything downloaded onto the PC after the chosen date of restorement.

Download Regcure, and crap cleaner, run these. Using Regcure remove startup programs u dont need and using CCleaner scan the registery and delete unused stuff. Download Spybot Search and destroy and scan using that. Then Defrag the HD and tell me what happens.

Laptops, like girlfriends, are only useful when they are turned on and protected against viruses.

Is there such a virus (or something else) that can stop all my protection programmes updating. AVG, Windows Defender and Spybot all won't update. Therefore Spybot won't let me scan. If not could this be down to the uni's internet in some way?

Your uni might have tight controls on downloading. Is your HDD making any unusual scratching kinda sonds?.

We fixed it in a weird way. It got hit by a snowball which melted and now it is back to how it was  Perhaps it was over-heating?

Still doesn't explain why I can't update my protection software?

Could be faulty RAM.

For the updation thing, try this:
Go to C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc
In this folder, there will be a file called HOSTS
(there may be more than one file, but make sure this has no extension, and the type of file is "file".)
Copy all the contents into another text file, and save it somewhere as a backup.

Now, copy this and paste it into the Hosts file. (Delete the earlier content)
Code:
# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

127.0.0.1 localhost

Save the file. Reboot your computer and try updating.

Used regcure (?20:mad) and CC and they have made it slightly faster but it still isn't what it should be. How do I defrag the HD?

Could be faulty RAM.

How could I find out if it is?

I dunno if this helps, but AVG came up with a message saying something like "Unable to update. Invalid Control CTF File" or something like that
