Playing his first match of the competition against his favorite opponents, Saeed Anwar rose up to the occasion with a delightful hundred whilst sharing in a sizeable 154-run stand for the 1st wicket alongside Majid Khan. Pakistan looked well on course for a total in excess of 300, but for timely breakthroughs in the middle-order from Anil Kumble and Ajit Agarkar that helped India restrict them to 296/8. Wasim Akram also managed to showcase his batting prowess with a quickfire half-century during which he scored most of Pakistan's runs at the death.
