India impressed on their cricketing debut at the Olympics with a total of 209 against Canada, one of the original four Olympians of 1896. Rustomji Meherhomji and Hormasji Kanga scored individual half-centuries and only just fell short of a century stand for the 1st wicket.

220px-Palwankar_Baloo.jpg

If their batting was impressive, their bowling and fielding even more so. Palwankar Baloo, the popular left-arm tweaker who came out of India's 1911 tour England with his reputation greatly enhanced, picked a brilliant 6-wicket haul whilst bowling a miserly spell. India won their first cricket match in the Olympics by a convincing 67-run margin and progressed to the Second Round of the tournament. That was that for Canada.

India won by 67 runs

Man of the match: Palwankar Baloo (India)

Damn! No chance we could chase that total (even it wasn't colossal) as one of their bowlers was absolutely reveling . Can't blame anyone; especially bowlers did a good job and we were actually weak on batting side.

TBH I am quite surprised Sydney Smith and Float Woods were not considered for the WI squad.

Following India, Burma too put up an impressive performance with the ball against a team with the experience of playing cricket in the Olympic Games. Things were initially going well for Argentina, until the Burma skipper Kenneth Goldie brought himself on to bowl. He picked 3/9 off 5 overs, as Argentina collapsed from 104/1 to 156 all out.

FitzAlan Drayson lived up to his reputation as one of the best batsmen to play cricket in Burma with an unbeaten 59 that guided his team to victory on their Olympic cricket debut. They were through to the next round of the competition, leaving Argentina to pack their bags and head on home.

Great 1st win at Olympic for us... that bowling from Baloo made this victory more special...

TBH I am quite surprised Sydney Smith and Float Woods were not considered for the WI squad.

Both were left out on purpose, I'll admit.

Float Woods had already retired or had his cricketing career cut short in 1904/05. And he would be around 40 by the time of the 1912 Games, too old an age for most fast bowlers to appear in a tournament like the Olympics.

Sydney Smith had also stopped playing for the WI team around the same time, while he continued his FC career in other parts of the world. He's likely to make a comeback next for the New Zealand team in the 1920s, if this league ever hits that era.

A good win for Burma against a team who has played in Olympics earlier. Top stuff from skipper himself and FitzAlan.
The way they started things 0ff, it looked all over for Burma then skipper himself took the charge and we were able to restrict them to a chasable score. Later we went on to chase it with the help of FitzAlan's half-century.
Looking forward to next round.

The Dutch team put up a competitive total of 131, having been given only 33 overs to bat due to a rain interruption before the scheduled starting time of the match. For the West Indies, it was Trinidadian Victor Pascall who impressed the most by conceding just 7 runs from his 5 overs while picking up 2 wickets.

Unfortunately for the West Indies, George Challenor's inability to adjust to the change in playing conditions cost them the match. He grinded out a painfully slow 37 off 105 balls, much to the delight of the unfancied Dutch team. The Netherlands were through to the next round to play the United States, whom they had sensationally beaten four years earlier in London.
