Cricket at the Olympics - London 1908
The Olympic Games will at long last be hosted by a country with favorable means of hosting international cricket matches. While originally scheduled to take place in Rome, the Games were moved to London due to the disastrous 1906 eruption of Mt Vesuvius which killed over 100 people and utterly devastated the city of Naples.
While most of the sporting events of the 1908 Games will be hosted at the White City Stadium, the MCC and IOC have come to an agreement to allow all cricket matches to be played at Lord's and The Oval. The 8 participating nations in the cricket tournament will be
Argentina,
Australasia,
Belgium, Canada,
Great Britain,
Netherlands,
South Africa and the United States.
1904 participants Ireland and the West Indies withdrew from the 1908 event for various reasons, and the Mixed Team were cast out after a disastrous 1904 campaign. They were replaced by Argentina, Belgium and Canada, while the NOCs of Australia and New Zealand merged together to form Australasia.

Summary
The Olympic Games returned to Europe for 1908, with the Games of the IV Olympiad being hosted by London - the capital city of the United Kingdom. And so the sport of cricket returned to the country of it's birth*, after having endured in exotic locations such as Athens in 1896, Paris in 1900 and St Louis in 1904.
An agreement between the IOC and the MCC allowed cricket matches to be held at the stadiums of Lord's and The Oval, rather than the White City Stadium which was built specifically for the event. The dimensions of the two grounds and the facilities available paved way for an exciting 8-team tournament. The participating nations were (in alphabetical order) Argentina, Australasia, Belgium, Canada, Great Britain, Netherlands, South Africa and the United States.
Great Britain won their first Gold medal for the sport by beating the United States by 1 wicket in the final of the tournament. They were undoubtedly inspired by playing at an Olympic event at home, and won all but one of their matches in a dominant campaign which saw them finally overcome the final hoodoo that had seen them fall short of Gold three consecutive times between 1896 and 1904.
The United States, who were the only team to beat Great Britain in the entire tournament, finished with Silver after failing to replicate their earlier result against the same opposition in the tournament final. Nonetheless, they continued their impressive trend of competing at a high standard with the best the cricket world has to offer. One would think it should be enough to earn them the so-called "Test status" already, but perhaps not in the eyes of those that govern the sport.
South Africa earned their first medal for cricket by beating Australasia in the Bronze Medal match. The latter disappointed by losing both the semi-final against Great Britain and the Bronze Medal match against South Africa, after a dominant display in the group stages where they were the only team to win all of their matches.
Argentina and Belgium finished 5th and 6th respectively in the final standings. The former redeemed themselves after a nightmarish start to the tournament, while the latter's performances slowly faded away after an impressive victory on cricketing debut. The Netherlands caused the greatest stir of the competition by overcoming the might of eventual Silver medalists USA in the group stages. However, a poor game against Argentina cost them the semi-final berth that was given to the United States instead.
Canada, returning to the Olympics after a eight-year hiatus looked nothing like the team that was almost good enough to win a Bronze medal in Paris in 1900. They lost all of their matches and finished last in the overall standings of the 1908 cricket tournament.
* I doubt anyone knew of the Flemish weavers way back in 1908.

Random trivia
- This was the first Olympics to contain no individual centuries since 1896. Victor Trumper came closest to reaching the mark with 92 against Belgium.
- Wilfred Rhodes took 13 wickets from just 5 matches at an astonishing average of 6.54, the cheapest by any bowler to have taken more than 6 wickets in a single Olympic season. The previous record was Bill Lockwood's 14 wickets at an average of 9.29 in the 1900 Olympics
- Bart King became the highest wicket-taker in Olympic history during the season. He went past Bill Lockwood's record of 23 wickets to finish with 30 at an average of 18.53. Next in line are Monty Noble and Percy Clark with 27 wickets apiece.
- The current record-holder for the most runs in Olympic history is the Australian left-hander Clem Hill. In 17 Olympic matches between 1896 and 1908, he has scored 523 runs at an average of 37.36. The only other batsman to have gone past the 500-run mark is his team-mate Victor Trumper, who has 501 runs at 33.40 from 15 matches as of 1908.

- Colin Blythe has been the most miserly among bowlers who have picked a minimum of 10 wickets in the Olympics. In 7 matches, the left-arm tweaker has conceded runs at a rate of 2.74, the cheapest in Olympic history.
- Percy Sherwell's remarkable 13 dismissals in the 1908 Olympics placed him at the top of the all-time dismissals list, beating USA's Henry Scattergood and Great Britain's Dick Lilley who both had 10 each. He also went past Dick Young's record 5 dismissals in an innings with 6 in the very next match.
- No fieldsman has taken more catches than Victor Trumper, who has 13 from 15 matches since 1900. He finished the 1908 Olympics with a record 7 catches in a season, beating the previous record of 6 by Charles Ollivierre for the West Indies in 1904, and Walter Cooper for Canada in 1900.
