"Battle of the Baltics" match included in England test championship
The regular "Battle of the Baltics" game between bitter rivals Lithuania and Estonia will take place on neutral ground this year, as it has been included in a new four-team test competition based in England. The competition, currently intended to also feature Zanzibar, will take place in early September and will replace Lithuania's traditional European away tour. Although details of the competition are still vague, it is believed that it will consist of a single round-robin followed by a final between the top two teams. Zanzibar go into the competition as favourites due to their performance in Costa Rica this summer, and England will have to perform much better than expected in order to win at home.
The "Battle of the Baltic" is currently a toss-up with no one willing to make any firm predictions. Both sides performed in a very similar manner in Costa Rica; getting to the quarter finals before losing to two of the better sides in the competition. Estonia is currently ranked one place above Lithuania in the One Day world rankings, although at this point they are only based on the knock-out cup and thus are not likely to be particularly accurate. The backroom staff are likely to be focusing on finding ways to limit Estonia's strong bowling attack: with Stojanovska, Riabovil and Ostrovsky managing to have a very good knock-out cup despite the relatively disappointing performance of the rest of their side.
Also announced by Cricket Lithuania today were details of a proposed tour to Lithuania by the impressive Kiribati side. The tour is believed to consist of one Test and two One Day Internationals and will take place following their tour of Norway. Kiribati surprised many in the Cricketing world with their strong performance in the Knock Out cup; getting to the quarter finals before losing in a very close game to New Zealand. Currently bookmakers are suggesting that they are the favourites going into the competition, but that is based on recent one-day form and Lithuania are confident that they can perform better in the longer form of the game.
Lithuanian captain Mindaugas Vytautas spoke of his optimism for the end of the summer: "I feel that we can do well and win both of these series. English conditions are broadly similar to those at home and that advantages us; and it might give our fast bowlers more of an opportunity to take wickets than we had in Costa Rica. We'll naturally be focusing on a victory in the Estonia game, although of course not at the expense of the right of the competition. Kiribati should be a fun series for us all and I feel that will be a competitive series; but its a side that we haven't had a great deal of experience with so I can't say with confidence how well we'll do. It should be lots of great cricket played, and that's great for the fans!" When asked about whether there is a prospect for more cricket following the Kiribati series; he confirmed that while nothing could be said confidently, there were discussions about an away series to an Asian nation ongoing, and that these were reasonably far developed.
Although a television deal has yet to be agreed for the English Test Challenge, live radio coverage of it, of the proposed Kiribati tour of Lithuania and of all future home Lithuanian internationals will be live in full, as always, on LRT Radijas.
Glinskis shines as Šiauliai roll over ineffective Neringa in Knockout Cup Semi
Šiaulių laimėjo monetos Lobizmas, užmušt pirmas
Neringa: 149 (Janavičius 72, Glinskis 32-4)
Šiauliai 150/3 (Grybas 67, Antinis 42-1)
Šiaulių laimėjo septynių užribiai
Šiauliai have guaranteed their place to Vilnius by easily defeating an off-colour Neringa at the MAXIMA Talšos Sports Stadium. A strong seam attack lead by Glinskis were able to take lots of early wickets, which pretty much guaranteed a low score despite the tail kicking.
Šiauliai elected to bowl first on a typical Talšos wicket: green, slow and favourable to swing and seam. This enabled Glinskis to shine, bowling a very tight line a length to dismiss much of the Neringa top order in his first four-over spell. Janavičius was the only batsman to score a significant score, with a fine 72 scored in incredibly uncertain conditions. The Neringan tail also hung around, with an annoying 50 run partnership for the ninth wicket giving the side a very outside shot at the win. All of the wickets fell to medium paced bowling; with even Robertas Grybas managing to take a couple with his slow seamers.
In reply, Šiauliai were able to walk to a reasonably easy win. Grybas lead from the front with a steady 67, and although Neringa was able to force a few wickets they were unable to get the consistent breakthroughs required to have a chance in the game. The pitch effectively neutered spin bowling, with Mindaugas Vytautas being kept wicketless. The main difference between the sides was the bowling: with Neringa being unable to bowl with a consistency that Šiauliai had been able to and thus consistently leaked runs. Grybas credited his bowlers for the win at the post-match press conference: "the quality of our new ball bowlers allowed us to take control of the game from the start, and Emilis and Jogailia [Norkus] were able to get most of the key batsmen early on. We have to ask questions about why we allowed the bottom of their batting to do well, but I'm not that concerned about it".
The "IKI Knockout Cup" is the oldest club cricket competition in Lithuania. It is similar to most Football domestic cup competitions and the former C&G Trophy in England in that it is a knockout competition that features teams at all levels - from teams featuring top international stars to very local clubs. Although the Lithuanian Cricket League is the main priority of top clubs, the knockout cup is highly regarded by teams due to its comparative history. Teams in lower divisions often relish the chance to play against the high ranked teams and giant-killings have taken place: most notably the embarrassing loss this year by Vilnius Cricket Club to a team from Užupis; a Vilnius neighbourhood that declared independence as an "independent Republic" - the loss being blamed on the side being uncomfortable with the less pristine conditions: most notably the mat wicket commonly used by smaller city sides. The final is held every year at the National Cricket Stadium in Vilnius, and this year will feature Šiauliai and Kaunas.
@HawkAussie I hope you don't mind me bigging up our game, I feel that the more rivalries there are in these things the better
