After 8 gruelling days of Test cricket, the final had finally come to an end much to the relief of the players involved. Gordon Greenidge was named Man of the Match for his 131 off 301 balls in the second innings which set the platform for a ginormous total of 696 for the Professional XI, and set the Post-war XI an impossible target of 723. They did well to score 439 however, beating the previous highest recorded score in the 4th innings of a Test at the MCG - 417 by England against Australia in the Centenary Test of 1977.

Everton_Weekes.jpg

Everton Weekes of the Post-war XI was named Player of the Season for scoring 735 runs at an average of 66.82 from 6 matches, with 3 centuries to his name (including 2 in the final itself) - more than Don Bradman who managed 724 at an average of 80.44 from 5 matches, with 2 centuries.

The Professional XI had a rather underwhelming first innings by their usually high standards, with Gordon Greenidge taking as many as 159 balls for his 29 and Greg Chappell 201 for his 58. But their lower order featuring Adam Gilchrist, Wasim Akram and Shane Warne breathed life back into their innings with some fairly quick runs towards the end as they managed to add 76 for their final 2 wickets after being reduced to 294/8.

Glenn-McGrath02.jpg

A 118-run partnership between Everton Weekes and Clyde Walcott had put the Post-war XI in a very good position at 244/3. But Weekes was then dismissed for 113 by Glenn McGrath, who induced a middle-order collapse that saw the Post-war XI lose 5 for 68 to end up at 309/8. They made it to 344 courtesy of Fijian legend Ilikena Bula's unbeaten 49 off 105 balls, thereby conceding a 26-run lead to the Professional XI. McGrath finished with figures of 5 for 89 from his 37 overs.

The Professional XI's second innings lasted 3 days, thus taking the match into the 7th day, - a first in LAB history as no other final in it's eight season history had lasted more than 5 days. They posted a ginormous 696 - Gordon Greenidge, Allan Border and Adam Gilchrist all scoring centuries, with Greg Chappell and Sunil Gavaskar narrowly missing out. Offspinners Jim Laker and Lance Gibbs were made to bowl nearly 120 overs between themselves for a grand total of 6 wickets, as the Professional XI set their team an impossible 723-run target to chase.

The Post-war XI recorded the highest score in the 4th innings of a Test at the MCG, beating England's 417 against Australia in the 1977 Centenary Test. But was nowhere near enough in the end, as the ruthless Professional XI outfit emerged victorious by 283 runs to clinch the LAB Season VIII title. Everton Weekes gave it his all once again, with 114 to follow up his 113 in the first innings, but in vain.

After 8 gruelling days of Test cricket, the final had finally come to an end much to the relief of the players involved. Gordon Greenidge was named Man of the Match for his 131 off 301 balls in the second innings which set the platform for a ginormous total of 696 for the Professional XI, and set the Post-war XI an impossible target of 723, which they fell well short of in the end.

@CerealKiller @PresidentEvil @Yash.

:clap:clap:clap Well played Professional XI to win the title.. Congrats @CerealKiller @PresidentEvil

We were out of the game most of the time.... The absence of Ken Berrington was perhaps the most unfortunate thing for us in the final... Also, Len Hutton did not perform upto his potential in the whole league...

Another great league by @VC the slogger ..

Finally we did it. It was a great all round performance by our team, just like in the whole season. Although not all of our batsmen and bowlers were consistent, they all played a crucial role at some point.
Thanks for the league @VC the slogger .

Legends At Battle will be played in the ODI format for the first time in nine seasons since it's inception. For it's ninth season, all-time XIs from the twelve Test-playing nations and the four best associate nations over the course of ODI cricket's 46-year long history, will play out a 12-team tournament to determine the greatest ODI side of all-time. The four lowest ranked Test nations will join the four top associate nations in a preliminary round to decide the four available berths for the final tournament.

The participating nations are (in alphabetical order): :afg: Afghanistan, :aus: Australia, :ban: Bangladesh, :can: Canada, :eng: England, :ind: India, :ire: Ireland, :ken: Kenya, :ned: Netherlands, :nzf: New Zealand, :pak: Pakistan, :sco: Scotland, :saf: South Africa, :sri:Sri Lanka, :wi: West Indies and :zim: Zimbabwe.

I've always wanted to run one of these all-time ODI thingies ever since I started managing leagues, but for one reason or another I have never been able to do so. Well, there's no time like the present.

Sign-ups (not on a first-come-first-serve basis) are open as of now for the following teams:

Just as a heads-up, I'm mass-tagging all managers who have participated in the two most recently concluded seasons of this league. A failure in communication last season resulted in arguably two of my most reliable managers throughout the course of this league's long history missing out. I won't be having any of that this time around.

Please declare your interest using the form below:

Code:
Name - 1st preference, 2nd preference, 3rd preference

Note: Those interested in managing two teams apiece can either pick a Full Member and an associate, or two associates. Ireland and Afghanistan having gained Test status this year no longer count as associates.
