Dusty - Plenty of turn on offer for spinners and a good place to bat for spin-savvy batsmen. Good pace bowlers are still likely to thrive.
Evenly balanced - Provides an evenly balanced contest for all disciplines.
Flat - A batsman-friendly pitch which provides little or no assistance to bowlers. Expect big totals.
Green - A lot of movement on offer, which makes it ideal for bowlers capable of swinging the ball.
Hard - Ideal conditions for batting. Good deal of bounce on offer for fast bowlers as well. Could go either way.
Dry/Slow - Ideal for slow and spin bowlers as the name suggests. Sometimes quite difficult to bat on.

Jack Hobbs broke the hoodoo that had seen him go century-less since Season VI with an innings of 175 that lasted nearly 400 balls. That too on a pacy wicket against the likes of Shane Bond, Dale Steyn, James Anderson, Mitchell Johnson and Jacques Kallis, against whom even the incomparable Don Bradman couldn't manage more than 54. The Interwar XI were looking good with a big first innings total of 419.

One could have noted that the Interwar XI had one too many spinners present in their XI on a pace-friendly Auckland wicket. But it didn't seem to matter with Clem Gibson picking 4 for 40, his best analysis of the season and being quite ably supported by part-time option Wally Hammond who was forced to open the bowling for his team. The Twenty20 Era XI managed 317, which could have been a lot less if not for Alastair Cook's stroke-filled 170 and Ricky Ponting's 76. Only four batsmen in their lineup reached double figures in the first innings, one of whom was a tailender. The Interwar XI finished with a healthy lead of 102.

The Twenty20 Era XI's pace quintet fared a lot better this time around. Shane Bond accounted for the first innings centurion Jack Hobbs in the very first over of the Interwar XI's innings, while Dale Steyn later took out Don Bradman for just 6. Mitchell Johnson picked 3 for 68 to add to his first innings five-fer, finishing the match just two short of the much desirable set of ten for the game. Nonetheless, the Interwar XI had done enough to set their opponents a very formidable target of 396 with nearly 5 sessions left to play in the match. The most sensible thing to do in such a situation would be to bat out for a draw, but it would see them finish just 1 point below the Interwar XI in the Season VIII standings and thus fall short of qualifying for the final. Nothing less than a miraculous victory will do for the Twenty20 Era XI from here if they are to qualify for the Season VIII final.
Wally Hammond, who played perhaps his best innings in a rather troubled season with the bat was a tad unfortunate to miss out of triple figures.

All hopes of a miraculous victory were dashed with the Twenty20 Era XI having been reduced to 167/7 and later 249/8, which left them little option but to bat for a draw instead. Luckily they had Kumar Sangakkara, he of the sizeable Test batting average of 57.40 coming in as low as No 7 in a lineup filled with batting greats. Sangakkara, with only tailenders Dale Steyn and Shane Bond for company, helped his team draw stalemate with the Interwar XI. There was still something to cheer about amidst the gloom, as he had managed to bring up a century shortly before the close of play on Day 5. So ends the Twenty20 Era XI's Season VIII campaign as a result of finishing just one point (66) short of the Interwar XI (67) at the end of this match. Nonetheless, a tremendous innings under a huge amount of pressure from an often under-rated but truly great player. The Interwar XI's chances of qualifying for the final will now depend on the results of the two matches remaining in the final round. A victory for the Professional XI who are basically guaranteed a final berth over the Early Test XI, and Golden Age XI over the Post-war XI should ideally be enough to see them through.
And so, a match that was initially touted as a battle between Don Bradman and Ricky Ponting, two of Australia's greatest ever batsmen, ended with two legendary English opening batsmen in Jack Hobbs and Alastair Cook gaining all the spotlight instead.

19th century lineup wrecker George Lohmann found the pace and bounce of the WACA pitch to his liking, and chipped in with 4 wickets. The Post-war XI were bowled out for 268 shortly before the close of play on the first day of the Test. Fijian cricketing great Ilikena Bula made good for himself with an attacking half-century whilst making his first appearance of the season.

That the Golden Age XI finished with 334 was slightly underwhelming given how invincible the likes of Victor Trumper, Clem Hill and KS Ranjitsinhji were looking in perfect conditions for batting. Even the fast and furious Fred Trueman was carted at 5 per over during his 16-over spell. Alan Davidson and Alec Bedser led the Post-war XI a great fightback with the ball to keep their opponents' lead restricted to 66.

Following an off-color performance against the Interwar XI and a rusty first innings spell here against the Post-war XI, Sydney Barnes regained some of that lost rhythm by picking 4 for 66 from 20 overs. His wickets included openers Ken Barrington and Garry Sobers, both dismissed in the very first over of the innings.
Half-centuries from the legendary Everton Weekes and Graeme Pollock, and some decent lower-order striking from Fred Trueman saw the Post-war XI set the Golden Age XI a target of 257 with more than two days remaining in the match. A victory or a draw should ideally see them through to the final to face the Professional XI at the expense of the Interwar XI.

Fred Trueman bowled the Post-war XI to a sensational stalemate with the Golden Age XI requiring just 1 run for victory when he took the final wicket to finish with 5 for 43. Ilikena Bula, the Fijian in the lineup held on to the one that mattered most by brilliantly catching Hugh Trumble for 5. It was the first ever tied match in LAB history.
That pretty much settles it - the Post-war XI (now on 69 points) will be playing the Season VIII final against the Professional XI (on 64 points; they require just 4 points to qualify, which can even be achieved while losing) at the MCG. Unless the Professional XI manage to somehow slip up in a major way and not gain the requisite 4 points for qualification in the final match of the round by losing horribly, the Interwar XI (67 points) and Twenty20 Era XI (66 points) have been knocked out of contention for the title as a result. They may still have something left to play for as the tournament officials ponder over whether or not to stage a 3rd place playoff at the very last moment.

WG Grace took on the might of the Professional XI's bowling lineup with a graceful 78 off 131 balls at the top of the order. His innings got the Early Test XI their first real good start in the tournament in quite a while, allowing the newly promoted Billy Murdoch and just capped Billy Barnes to cash in with half-centuries of their own. At 267/4, they looked good for a first innings total in excess of 400.
But then came the collapse, triggered by the legendary Australian duo of Glenn McGrath and Shane Warne who shared the remaining 6 wickets between themselves for just 34 runs. McGrath finished with 4 for 70 from 28 overs, and Warne 4 for 75 from 27.2 overs as the Early Test XI folded for 301.

In response, the Professional XI posted a mammoth 525 off 159.5 overs before being bowled out to finish with a huge lead of 224 runs. Except for Greg Chappell and Viv Richards, pretty much everyone in their lineup got going - including the struggling trio of Sunil Gavaskar, Gordon Greenidge and Allan Border. The captain Steve Waugh was the only batsman to reach three figures, with a patient 101 off 241 balls. Border, dismissed on 98, and Adam Gilchrist on 92 only narrowly missed out. The only real positive for the Early Test XI was Fred Spofforth, who returned his best figures - 4 for 94 from 26 overs, in a rather difficult season with the ball for him.

-X-The Early Test XI were able to avoid the ignominy of an innings defeat, but only just. Shane Warne ripped through their lineup to claim 6 for 54, his best haul of the season, and finished with 10 wickets for the match. What a way to bounce back after having taken his wickets at 51.90 off his previous three matches. His average has now toned down to a much more respectable 32.40 as a result of this performance. The Professional XI need just 21 for victory now.

They won by 9 wickets to secure their place in the Season VIII final, where they will be facing the Post-war XI at the iconic MCG.
This spelled the end of a rather disappointing campaign for the Early Test XI which saw them lose all 5 of their matches. There were some fine individual efforts in their team, such as WG Grace scoring 460 runs at 46.00 and Arthur Shrewsbury 471 at 47.10, but overall they failed to click together as a unit. One cannot hope to do well in this format of the game without doing so.
