ENGLAND vs RHODESIA
World Cup, Match 7 at The Oval

The Oval would play host to yet another high-profile World Cup first round clash, this time between the hosts England - whose players have more experience of one-day cricket than any other team in the world - and the controversial Rhodesia team - who managed to defeat an International Wanderers XI containing some of the world's best players earlier in the year. Make no mistake, this wouldn't be an easy experience for either team.

After Mike Denness won the toss and chose to bat first, the Rhodesian bowlers posed a real challenge - particularly the leg-breaks of Jackie du Preez. He claimed the wickets of Barry Wood, Tony Greig, Denness himself and Chris Old as he put England into a real bother. Indeed, if it hadn't been for unlikely batting saviours Peter Lever and John Snow, who put on a very handy 42 for the ninth wicket, then Rhodesia would have felt themselves very much in the game. As it was, England managing to cross the 200 barrier seemed significant, as their bowlers really know their way around a one-day innings.

Sure enough, Snow and Lever - along with Chris Old - turned tormenters again for Rhodesia. This time it was their batsmen who struggled with the pace and control of the English attack: they did a good job of keeping up with the run rate, but to do so they ended up giving enough opportunities that the bowlers were always in the game. A combative innings from young all-rounder Duncan Fletcher would have caused Denness one or two grey hairs, but for the most part England were just the better side and retained good control of the game. They can expect to face New Zealand in the quarter-finals, unless something very strange happens.

EAST AFRICA vs NEW ZEALAND
World Cup, Match 8 at Edgbaston

There have been a few games in this World Cup already where upsets looked like they could happen, and one where it definitely did. East Africa against New Zealand never looked likely to be such a game, even with East Africa lucky enough to be able to call on both their county players.

The East Africans surprised everybody by choosing to bat first after winning the toss, despite having perhaps one batsman who might be able to deal with Richard Hadlee - and that too on a good day. And even that didn't work out too well: after a short and unpleasant working over from the aforementioned Richard, Nottinghamshire's Basher Hassan was the perfect victim for brother Dayle. After that, there was nobody who was even able to reach 20; only a fighting 15 from Pranlal Divecha was enough to stop the innings from coming to an end before reaching three figures.

In defence of the indefensible, the East Africans did a pretty good job. Glamorgan's John Solanky bowled an excellent opening spell, backed up ably by Divecha and Mehmood Quaraishy. In another universe, they'd have been delighted to have restricted the Kiwis to 100 for three after 27 overs, but in this universe that was only two short of the winning line that was reached three balls later.

Yeah... East Africa never stood a chance.

And so, just like that we know our quarter-final draw. Three British teams have made it into the last eight, and the winners of these matches will be the seeded teams at the next World Cup in 1979. Assuming I end up running that one too...

PAKISTAN vs SCOTLAND
World Cup, Quarter-Final 1 at Edgbaston

Before the game, experts expected only one winner from this David and Goliath quarter-final, and it wasn't Scotland. Much like Denmark in the first round, their batsmen hadn't really seen anything like Imran and Sarfraz before, and it was going to be a struggle for them.

Figuring that things wouldn't be any worse if they waited, the Scots opted to bat first after winning the toss. It wasn't an easy start: in no time at all, they'd been reduced to a pitiful 13 for four, with their top four - including Round One hero Brian Hardie - all back in the pavilion. Things were looking grim, but fighting innings from Racionzer, Stewart and Peden all helped the recovery. The Scots would have been far better off if one of those three had gone on to make a big contribution, but scores of 30-odd were better than no score at all, and guided their team most of the way to 200.

In other circumstances, there could be some debate as to whether things might have been different had they been asked to chase over 200. The Pakistani batsmen silenced any such arguments by reaching their 194-run target with half their wickets and over ten overs remaining to them. Javed Miandad's fine unbeaten 49 came at better than a run a ball, which underlined how comfortable he was at the crease. There should be some credit though for Jimmy Allan, as the spinner took three top-order wickets despite conceding nearly five runs per over. His efforts weren't enough to save his country's cricket team; Pakistan reach the semi-finals and will be a seeded team again at the 1979 tournament.

AUSTRALIA vs IRELAND
World Cup, Quarter Final 2 at Old Trafford

The second World Cup Quarter Final, and the second one with an overwhelming pre-game favourite. Again, that overwhelming favourite was the seeded team from Australia, who had overcome a potential bogey team in their first round win against Canada.

Despite the confidence shown by going out and batting first after winning the toss, the Australian batting had shown frailties against Canada. With most observers agreeing that the Irish attack was better, the likes of Torrens, O'Riordan and Corlett represented a potential banana skin. Alan Turner and Rick McCosker made an impressively aggressive start to the Australian innings, but their self-confidence put them in trouble's way: before long, both had lost their wickets to Irish bowlers who they seemingly underestimated. Not only that, but a procession of Australian batsmen followed: in order, Turner, McCosker, Chappell, Chappell, Walters and Edwards all departed before their team had passed 80 runs or 20 overs. Though Rod Marsh did what he could to overcome this near complete disarray, he didn't have the support or freedom to see Australia past 200: instead, his rearguard saw Australia reach 182.

Against Ireland, very much a non-Test team, this should have been more than enough for the likes of Lillee and Thomson to defend. However, that statement overlooks the form of Ivan Anderson. Fresh off the back of his mighty century against Bangladesh, he looked calm and composed against the best bowlers he had ever faced. He progressed serenely to an unbeaten 73, a pillar around which the Irish batsmen could build. And build they did. Nobody else in the top seven scored over 20, but lots of little contributions got Ireland to 126 for six when he was joined by Dermot Monteith. And by that point, the Australians had overplayed their hand: Lillee, Thomson and Walker were all bowled out, and Ireland weren't out of the game at all. Not. At. All. And an unbeaten seventh-wicket stand of 57 underlined that point by seeing them to a historic four-wicket victory.

Another incredible innings by Ivan Anderson has made him an Irish legend for as long as he lives.
