Eagles' decision to bowl first after winning the toss has proved to be the right one. No one could know how the pitch is going to behave better than the hom team.
Roger Telemachus made early inroads by dismissing Aaron Finch on the last delivery of the very first over. It was mostly because of Nicky Boje's incredible catch.

On the first delivery of the second over, Cliffe Deacon claimed the wicket of Michael Klinger as the Victorian Bushrangers slumped further to be at 3/2 in 1.1.
An incredible start to an important encounter as the Eagles dispatch both Bushrangers' openers within the first two overs. Can Victorian Bushrangers come back?

Bushrangers' woes continue, as both David Hussey and Cameron White fall after scores of 10 and 4 respectively. Bushrangers find themselves on 25/4 in 5.0.
A rash and not needed shot from Hussey cost him his wicket to Cliffe Deacon, and Roger Telemachus dismissed White with an on-point yorker on middle-stump.

Adam Crosthwaite and Brad Hodge have rejuvenated Bushrangers' innings with solid, cautious knocks to take them from 25/4 after 5.0, to 66/4 after 10.0.
Scores or the scoring-rate they've been plodding along isn't exactly suited to twenty-twenty cricket, but given the pitch and their start, it is highly respectable.

Fifty for Adam Crosthwaite! This has been an innings of immense grit and resilience. Him and Brad Hodge have resuscitated Victorian Bushrangers' hopes.
This game is very much alive, and the momentum's on Bushrangers' side. Eagles will have to make a comeback if they want to restrict them to an achievable total.

Much needed breakthrough for the Diamond Eagles! Adam Crosthwaite tried his luck one too many times, and now he has to pay the price for it with his wicket.
An easy catch brings an end to Adam Crosthwaite's renaissance. Dillon du Preez has provided his team with a breakthrough, but can they capitalize on it?

They have capitalized on it! Nicky Boje bags two wickets in the 18th over to derail the Bushrangers after Adam Crosthwaite and Brad Hodge's anchoring innings.
134/7 is not a bad score on a pitch like this, but the Bushrangers will want to finish on a much more explosive note to give the Eagles somewhat of a challenge.

A lackluster finish brings the Bushrangers' innings to a close, as they could only manage 13 runs in the last 2.0 overs for the loss of 2 wickets, finishing on 147/9.
Brad Hodge fittingly drove this score with a cautious, calculated knock. He scored 60 runs off 56 deliveries before being dismissed on the last ball of the innings.

Boeta Dippenaar latched onto an excellent catch to end the Bushrangers' innings. Regardless, the Bushrangers will be happy with what they've accomplished.
Statistically, Bushrangers have the best bowling of the tournament, and tho Eagles haven't exactly delivered with the bat, they are capable of chasing this down.

Bushrangers' top-order failed to deliver in the final but fortunately for them, Brad Hodge and Adam Crosthwaite came to their rescue with blistering knocks.
They revived their team with a 92-run 5th-wicket stand, during which, both achieved their fifties. If it weren't for them, this game would've been over already.

It was a spectacular display of bowling from the Eagles with only one bowler going wicketless. Telemachus, Deacon, Boje and McLaren bagged two scalps apiece.
Johan van der Wath went wicketless and conceded 25 runs in 3.0. All in all, Eagles will be really happy with their bowling effort apart from few middle overs.

Wicket in the first over! Mick Lewis makes inroads early as Loots Bosman is lbw after deciding to leave an unexpected in-swinger. He goes after scoring just 4.
Victorian Bushrangers have gotten off to a great start with the ball in defense of a fairly moderate score. Diamond Eagles have to recover from this very quickly.

Cameron White bags the last two wickets to complete the victory which was certain by the end of the powerplay. Diamond Eagles face a heavy 51-run defeat.

There you have it folks! Victorian Bushrangers have bowled the Diamond Eagles out for a mere 96 in a run-chase of 148 to become the Champions of Champions.
This game was decided within the first 6.0 overs by Mick Lewis and Peter Siddle. Both bowlers picked-up three wickets apiece inside of those 6.0 overs.

Ryan McLaren and Nicky Boje did make an effort to save face, but it was ultimately foiled by Dirk Nannes. Cameron White wrapped-up the game soon after that.
Diamond Eagles folded under pressure and lost by a hefty margin of 51 runs. This was the 'Australians emerged triumphant as the South Africans choked' story.

Translation: Show some mercy please.

Didn't expect to be bowled away so badly, but our batting had been quite off the whole season. Congrats @Akshay. ! Your team truly deserves to be the champion of champions.

I don't know. I think I posted this before. I used the same database for each team from their respective season. I don't know how he can perform so bad in one season, and perform the complete opposite of it in the other. I do think the fact that your team played 5 out of your 7 games on a fast-bowler's wicket was what caused such a drastic change.

Did a little digging from the 2006 season which your team won and found this. Your team played three games at Melbourne (normal turf) and three at St. Kilda (fast-bowling turf).

Boeta Dippenaar scored 161 runs in those three games at Melbourne (with 96 being his best score, ever), whereas he had scores of 59 (off 55 - against Sinhalese of all teams), 29 (off 8 - admittedly better) and a 2-ball 0 (Sialkot Stallions) at St. Kilda.

EDIT: When you played the Bushrangers at MCG in this championship (CoC), Dippenaar wasn't in the team. You made a mistake because it was the same team and the same venue where he scored his aforementioned 96 in 2006. Maybe that could've restored your faith in him.

Other than that, the only explanation for his performance would be his rating (which was not so high given how he performed in the tournament that qualified them to CL). His 38 in 2 innings justified him doing well when the pitch had little for the bowlers, but not when it was swinging like crazy and the opposition teams were well-equipped with quality fast bowlers.

Anyways, @Na Maloom Afraad This was another one of your amazingly managed leagues. The matches were quick (except the final) and the presentation was spot on. :)

Thanks man, I gotta admit I got real lazy at the end. Also some real life stuff got in the way, which didn't help. Nonetheless, it was fun to manage and hope do it again, sometime relatively soon. :)

INAUGURAL EDITION

Clash of Champions is a quadrennial four-team league played between the Champions of Champions League Twenty20. It truly is the Clash of Champions in every sense.

Clash of Champions is not canon to the Champions League statistics or overall records. Clash of Champions is purely a sub-division of the Champions League Twenty20.
It is viewed by the organizers as a Super World Cup considering that Champions League is already a World Cup to domestic franchises/clubs around the cricketing world.

2007-08 EDITION / BACKGROUND

This edition took place after the conclusion of the 2007 Champions League which was held in Pakistan and before the 2008 Champions League that was played in Africa.
The four teams that took part in this event had qualified by winning the first-four editions of the Champions League which includes the first-ever edition from 2004.

Diamond Eagles qualified by winning the aforementioned season. In which, only three teams competed so the Eagles' route to victory was relatively straightforward.
Leicestershire Foxes accomplished the same feat the year after in a similar manner since that season also consisted of only three participants including themselves.

In 2006, the league saw its first expansion as the number of teams doubled from the previous year. Diamond Eagles won again, becoming the first team to do it twice.
Pakistan hosted the 2007 edition as the number of teams grew even more. Victorian Bushrangers emerged victorious after not losing a single game the entire season.

BRIEF SUMMARY / INAUGURAL CLASH OF CHAMPIONS

The inaugural edition of Clash of Champions took place in four venues across three countries with South Africa's two-time winners playing hosts in two different cities.

Diamond Eagles - Champions of Champions League 2004 and 2006 hosted games in Bloemfontein and Kimberley, with the latter also hosting the final of the league.
Victorian Bushrangers hosted their home games at the famed Melbourne Cricket Ground, whereas Leicestershire Foxes hosted their games at Grace Road in Leicester.

Champions of Champions League 2007 - Victorian Bushrangers emerged victorious by defeating 2006 Diamond Eagles in the final at the Diamond Oval in Kimberley.
2006 Diamond Eagles had played Victorian Bushrangers twice in the league games, and won on both occasions. Their loss to them in the final came as a shock to many.

Leicestershire Foxes and Diamond Eagles' 2004 squad failed to qualify for the final, finishing third and fourth respectively. 2004 Diamond Eagles won only two games.
Victorian Bushrangers and Leicestershire Foxes tied on points with exactly the same number of wins, but Victorian Bushrangers advanced by having a better net run rate.

A comprehensive 51-run victory in the final crowned Victorian Bushrangers the Champions of Champions. Adam Crosthwaite was the player of the final for his 33-ball 52.
Brad Hodge was the leading run-scorer as well as the Player of the Tournament with 289 runs from 7 innings. Roger Telemachus was the leading wicket-taker - 15 scalps.

MATCHES OF THE TOURNAMENT

1st League Match, 2004 DIAMOND EAGLES vs VICTORIAN BUSHRANGERS - 2004 Diamond Eagles won by 9 runs
Mangaung Oval, Bloemfontein

An incredible win for 2004 Diamond Eagles as they started their Clash of Champions campaign. Victorian Bushrangers fell short by a mere margin of just 9 runs.
Diamond Eagles' bowlers delivered the victory after a hard-fought battle with the Victorian Bushrangers' batsmen. This game had plenty of twists and turns.

Anchoring innings from Diamond Eagles top run-scorer in the domestic league - Loots Bosman salvaged them from a potential collapse after an early scare.
Eagles seemed to be in trouble after Peter Siddle's dismissal of Morne van Wyk on the second ball of the match. Boeta Dippenaar was dismissed not long after.

Andrew McDonald caught him plumb in front of the wicket to end his innings for just 12 in the third over. Loots Bosman and Ben Hector then carried the team.
Bosman parlayed his innings according to the situation. At first he scored runs cautiously, but once he was set at the crease he started to go after the bowlers.

Ben Hector seemed like he was protecting his end of the wicket. He played a calculated innings which allowed Bosman to score much freely and much quickly.
Cameron White provided the breakthrough the Bushrangers needed and ended the partnership by dismissing Ben Hector after his run-a-ball 36 in the 16th over.

But by that time the recovery process had already been completed by the two batsmen. What came next was an attempt at launching an assault on the bowlers.
Davy Jacobs and Allan Donald gave the Eagles' innings the finishing touch they required to push the Bushrangers, by propelling their score past the 150-run mark.

Victorian Bushrangers started their chase going hell for leather, scoring 26 runs from the first 3.0 overs before Allan Donald brought a screeching halt to that.
Allan Donald bowled a superb over, picking up two wickets. It seemed as though he had turned back the hands of time. David Hussey departed soon after too.

Just when it seemed like it would take a herculean effort to bring them back into the game, Michael Klinger and Brad Hodge delivered an incredible response.
The pair of them put on 72 runs for the 4th-wicket, putting the Bushrangers in the driver's seat. Michael Klinger achieved his 50 off 35 deliveries in the meanwhile.

The two would've and should've taken the Bushrangers home, but Thandi Tshabalala pulled a rabbit out of hat and dismissed them both in the space of four balls.
With 28 runs required off the last 3.0 overs, the Bushrangers faltered and fell short due to some excellent death-bowling by Roger Telemachus and Deon Kruis.

8th League Match, LEICESTERSHIRE FOXES vs 2006 DIAMOND EAGLES - Leicestershire Foxes won by 1 wicket (with 8 balls remaining)
Grace Road, Leicester

2006 Diamond Eagles almost ran away with the win! David Masters and Charl Willoughby's last-wicket stand saves Leicestershire Foxes from an unimaginable loss.
After having bowled the Eagles out for a mere 130, Leicestershire Foxes nearly failed the run-chase and lost from a position that should've ensured an easy win.

Diamond Eagles crumbled to a modest 130. Multiple batsmen in their lineup found starts but none of them could capitalize and convert them into something big.
Particularly Jacques Rudolph and Cliffe Deacon, two batsmen who have been the mainstays of the their team. Today they faltered, and so did their entire team.

Once again the Eagles' top-order underdelivered and put them in a place of trouble. Had it not been for players chipping in, they would've been in a worse place.
Phil DeFreitas and Darren Stevens starred with the ball, picking up 4 for 28 and 3 for 14 respectively. Mark Cleary had a noteworthy dismissal of Davy Jacobs.

Diamond Eagles hadn't given up yet tho. Their bowlers almost pulled off a sensational win before the Foxes held onto their nerves and got themselves over the line.
Jeremy Snape and Paul Nixon played pivotal roles in recovering their team's lost momentum after Cliffe Deacon and Roger Telemachus' explosive opening spells.

Another collapse, this time towards the end of the innings saw the Foxes in a place of worry again. This time, it was Charl Willoughby's flurry that saved them.
Leicestershire Foxes score the win after failing to do so in a very similar situation from their previous encounter, giving this fierce rivalry the perfect encore.

11th League Match, VICTORIAN BUSHRANGERS vs 2006 DIAMOND EAGLES - 2006 Diamond Eagles won by 1 run
Melbourne Cricket Ground, Melbourne

What a game! An unbelievable 1-run victory for 2006 Diamond Eagles not only secured their place in the final, but it also gave them the right to host the final.
Talk about an exciting finish to a game. Diamond Eagles, after giving the Victorian Bushrangers a target of 141 to chase, won by the narrowest of margins - 1 run.

From Dillon du Preez's hat trick in the 6th over, to Adam Crosthwaite's fightback, to Roger Telemachus' two wickets when only one run was left. This game had all!

In a must win game, Diamond Eagles underdelivered with the bat as the Victorian Bushrangers bowled them out for 140 on a relatively batsman-friendly wicket.
Jacques Rudolph's 15-ball 28 at number four rejuvenated the Eagles' innings after yet another failure from their top-order. His knock included 3 fours and a six.

After finding themselves in the doldrums again, the Diamond Eagles regrouped courtesy of Ben Hector and skipper Nicky Boje's 66-run stand for the 6th-wicket.
Once these two were dismissed by Dirk Nannes and Shane Harwood respectively, Diamond Eagles' tail collapsed and they were bowled-out for a below-par 140.

The star from the previous game for the Bushrangers could only claim two wickets this time. Shane Warne dismissed two tailenders to wrap-up Eagles' innings.
Dirk Nannes and Mick Lewis picked-up two wickets apiece as well, whereas Peter Siddle starred with three scalps to his name. Shane Harwood bagged a wicket too.

To say the Diamond Eagles had underdeliverivd with the bat would be quite the understatement, however, they were more than well-equipped to defend this total.
Victorian Bushrangers started off to a flyer as their openers, Michael Klinger and Aaron Finch added 49 runs for the opening-wicket before its eventual stoppage.

After that, the game did a full one-eighty in favor of the Eagles with Dillon du Preez's hat trick. He dismissed Michael Klinger, Brad Hodge and Cameron White.
Bushrangers were put in a position where they had to regroup despite a great start, all because of du Preez's hat trick. Crosthwaite and Hussey started rebuilding.

And to their credit, they did a solid job. Hussey and Crosthwaite added 65 runs for the 5th-wicket the same way Hector and Boje salvaged the Diamond Eagles.
They would've run away with the game had it not been for Johan van der Wath's breakthrough. Ryan McLaren followed that by picking-up two in two, next over.

Even though McLaren conceded 13 runs in his 2-wicket over, it did expose the Bushrangers' tail which the Eagles' bowlers exploited to win the game by just 1 run.
Telemachus picked-up two wickets when just two runs were left to win it for his team. With this result, the Foxes-Eagles game had now become a dead-rubber.

HIGHLIGHT REEL

:saf: :bwl: ALLAN DONALD 5/17 (3.0 overs) 2004 DIAMOND EAGLES
7th LEAGUE MATCH - VICTORIAN BUSHRANGERS vs 2004 DIAMOND EAGLES at Melbourne Cricket Ground, Melbourne

Adam Crosthwaite and Cameron White's fifties, alongside Brad Hodge's boisterous 28 powered the Bushrangers to 177/9 despite Allan Donald's fast-bowling genius.
Allan Donald dismantled Victorian Bushrangers' top-order, picking-up two wickets in the very first over which was then followed by another wicket in the 3rd over.

Donald's double-strikes reduced the Bushrangers to 20/3 before Brad Hodge retaliated with a 12-ball 28. Hodge's innings brought the Bushrangers innings back up.
Allan Donald was brought back into the attack for the final over, but by then, his early scare was undone. He did pick-up two more wickets to complete his 5-fer.

:aus: :bwl: SHANE WARNE 5/28 (3.1 overs) VICTORIAN BUSHRANGERS
9th LEAGUE MATCH - LEICESTERSHIRE FOXES vs VICTORIAN BUSHRANGERS at Grace Road, Leicester

Shane Warne starred with the ball, picking-up a vital 5-wicket haul as the Victorian Bushrangers defeated the Leicestershire Foxes by a hefty margin of 40 runs.
The Foxes' batting line completely crumbled against the Bushrangers, with their top and middle-order being skittled for 41. A late fightback was never enough.

Shane Warne took all the limelight by claiming a 5-wicket haul as he starred with the ball. Peter Siddle and Shane Harwood claimed two wickets apiece as well.
Victorian Bushrangers scored a much-needed victory to stay at the top. Warne's brilliance helped the Bushrangers knock the Foxes out of contention for the final.

From Dillon du Preez's hat trick in the 6th over, to Adam Crosthwaite's fightback, to Roger Telemachus' two wickets when only one run was left. This game had it all!

After the start, Dillon du Preez turned the game on its head by picking-up a hat trick. He dismissed Michael Klinger, Brad Hodge and Cameron White in the 6th over.
Telemachus picked-up two wickets when just two runs were left to win it for his team. With this result, the Foxes-Eagles game has now become a dead-rubber.
