I don't think England would drop Labuschagne if they had him. They might be daring but they aren't stupid. :lol

Starc would be a good night hawk. I've always thought Cummins batting like he does in the IPL would make more sense then whatever timid rubbish he usually unveils in test cricket.

Maxi is definitely one that would add something, his bowling is a good addition too.

Cummins is a trustworthy bat in tests though for a tail-ender. Haven't seen him do anything similar in international white ball games like he did with KKR so far.

Yeah Labu being dropped is a bit harsh but him and Smudge seem too similar... I suppose the former can pull off a decent aggressive game too. I do think he's well overdue for a slide down, he's riding luck well beyond the 'you make your own luck' position.

Maxi used to be one of the best Shield batters back then too and unlike many T20 hitters of the times he was very passionate about wanting to play tests. Never got a fair chance even when the sandpaper saga was unveiled and never was taken seriously as a test batter despite it being arguably his best format. Pretty much any other side on the planet would have turned his undoubted talent into something useful but not the powers be in CA.

I think the plan was for Maxwell to play Shield cricket as a precursor to the tour of India. Then he broke his leg.

This has been part of the problem with their management of him too (not the broken leg in a freak incident :p). They've only viewed him as an Asia specialist because he can handle spin well with his funky shots and because he can bowl some useful spin that takes the focus away from the lack of proper spinner development until recently in their system. And even then he didn't get a game ahead of the incumbent Head who was absolutely clueless against spin on the whole tour and had a notable weakness vs spin in tests even before that. The theme with him has always been 'let's dangle him with a carrot' without ever being serious about including him as a player in tests.

He's got a decent-ish record in county cricket (runs per innings is around 32 from 14 innings with a century and two fifties). Take out his abominable spell at the Lancs (I have no idea how he managed to miss out when the rest of the lineup was feasting in the same games :lol) and that record looks even better. There definitely was a good test cricketer in him and it's a shame we'll never know that when Australia were crying out for a middle order batter like him during that era of crisis.

:aus: :bat: Nic Maddinson
I agree with all your picks except this. Maddinson has been poor ever since he broke his arm - he doesn't seem to be able to play the short ball anymore from what I've seen.

I'd add Marnus back in his place and open with Inglis - but if that's not what you want to do (and fair enough if so), Khawaja (actually still decent attacking), Handscomb, or if he can recover from his health issues Will Pucovski could be good shouts for this spot.

Agreed.. he’s been crap this season.

Other than Puc and Ussie the others aren’t openers and I don’t think even Baz would push middle order batters into a test opening spot (even one with ‘limited’ limited overs opening experience like Inglis). The former two are fairly defensive too… is there no one else who’s even remotely in the class of Warner when it comes to aggression? :(

First class stats may be a bit misleading in this case (I suspect this has also influenced your take on Green, who's a more aggressive bat than most too), as particularly this year Australian cricket has been very low-scoring.

Marnus' resume was shown today - he rarely hits a long ball, but he can play traditional strokes in a quick manner and still score. He's not exactly Kraigg Brathwaite.

As for Handscomb... he has the most runs in the Shield this year, at the fourth highest strike rate for anyone with over 200 runs (ahead of him are two bowling all-rounders and Matthew Wade, who's only played 3 games).

My take on Green was from watching him actually. He’s been a slow starter but catches up well once he’s got his eye in which does take longer than someone like Head. I suspect he can easily be a lot more aggressive at the start once he gets used to international cricket. It’s also why I’ve wanted him at 5 in tests and 4 in ODIs so that he can take his time to build a platform to launch from.

I’ve missed a banger of an innings from Marnus indeed. Handscomb‘s always been the type of guy who keeps himself busy at the crease… not sure if he’ll ever get to add to his international honours but I’d back him ahead of Head in India for sure.

@wasteyouryouth I've decided to throw up a Bazball batting order for every side that I can think of with the guys they have carrying on from our previous discussion. :spy

Starting with Australia...

:aus: :bat: David Warner
:aus: :bat: Nic Maddinson
:aus: :bat: Travis Head
:aus: :bat: Steve Smith
:aus: :ar: Glenn Maxwell
:aus: :ar: Cameron Green
:aus: :wk: Josh Inglis

  • Warner is tailor made for this approach and he's the perfect opener you'd want from this era. Partnering him will not be the stodgy Khawaja from Queensland but it'll be Maddo who has honed the art of Bazballing on the roads of Junction Oval and MCG.

  • Over at three Labuschagne will make way for a promoted Head in a very Pope esque move as Head's deficiencies against spin are shielded and he's just purely tasked with deploying those drives instead (yes Labu has the superior test SR over Head by 0.01 but Head's the more aggressive one and a side could always use more Head, trust me:spy).

  • There's no stopping Smith from playing in this lineup though, he's the best since Bradman and he'll be unburdened in this lineup with encouragement to play like the side's seven down. Maxwell will finally get justice in this side for all those years of FC performances and he'll be backed to the end.

  • Green's the most traditional batter in this side but his raw talent and balance he offers means he'll have to grudgingly play in this side... we'll make a Stokes out of him soon enough. Carey's got some impressive aggressive performances in this side but Inglis is a different class when it comes to hitting and so it'll be the British born keeper who will play ahead of him.

With noted activist Cummins leading the side and the Aussie version of nighthawk in Mitchell Starc also present... this side will be a mighty challenge for Baz's boys!
Not even Baz would drop Marnus.

Marnus Labuschagne joined elite company when he scored a double century in the 1st inns and century in the 2nd in the ongoing test match at Perth.

Sachin never achieved this, in fact he probably never even scored a century in both inns of a test match. Feel free to prove me wrong though, as I am not sure as welll, since a billion plus people worship him as a god.

Seriously though, perhaps one of the self-proclaim historians sitting in reddit and youtube or martial artist guru of stats can answer if Sachin ever scored a century in both inns of a test match.

A simple Google search should suffice. Would even save you from typing up a quarter of a (no substance) essay lmao.
