I was a bit skeptical about him tbh in the T20 format. I thought his brother is a better prospect in limited-overs cricket but he has definitely proved me wrong so far.

Murli Vijay looked horrible today, however. I think if Ruturaj Gaikwad is available for the next game, he should replace Vijay.

His stats are definitely not up there and he did not have the best of seasons last time around but he showed some real glimpses of his potential with the fifty and that hat-trick. All he needs is some smart coaching and he can be a real star.

I hope Gaikwad's absence was due to fitness and not because they deemed Vijay to be the superior player. The latter looks cooked.

Rayudu has to be the key this season, every team needs a good Indian batsman in the top four and without Raina he needs to step up. He looks genuinely different this year though, the confidence he had in his style of play today was very reminiscent of him before the doomed India recall.

It is easy to see why they bought an overseas youngster like him in too. Has the mentality of an elite and experienced player which fits in well with the dressing room ethos.

As for his future prospects, I would still keep him floating around in the middle order for now with Gaikwad and Rayudu/Faf opening although it wouldn't surprise me to see him at the top to inject some powerplay aggression that the XI sorely lacks now.

Watch for Mitchell Santner as well.[DOUBLEPOST=1600539104][/DOUBLEPOST]Also, a lot of people will blabber about the decision to send in Jadeja and Curran. I think the decision was made because they were left handers and also because Dhoni would take 2-4 balls against the spinner. Class!

Had no idea that Krunal had an over left when Jadeja even walked in, makes complete sense with that context. Dhoni's captaincy for the most part in this game was spot on especially with the management of bowlers in the second half of the first innings.

Ngidi could do the job of the specialist death bowler if Bravo struggles once again, the man has been class for South Africa in recent times at the death but has struggled outside of it.

Dhoni will do the Dhoni stuff when the time comes. CSK's only point of concern is Vijay. He looked clueless.
I won't think too much about Vijay at the moment. I think he was played because Ruturaj Gaikwad hasn't fully recovered yet.

A very satisfying start to the campaign for CSK! Also today's game gave glimpses of the thought process from Dhoni and CSK's management where Dhoni is likely looking at this phase as the transition period where he is going to push other guys up and above him and going to give them the experience to handle pressure situations. It was evident in his post match interview and also when Deepak Chahar gave that bite before today's game when he said what Dhoni told him last year about "I groom players".

I totally loved the idea of sending Jadeja and Curran above Jadhav and Dhoni, and both decisions paid off. Ngidi started rusty, but very quickly he showed how dangerous he is for opposing teams and how crucial he is going to be for CSK in death overs. With Chahar having improved his bowling in last season to handle death overs, CSK now have Ngidi and Chahar for death and someone like Curran to bowl at the start as an attacking option. Also Rayudu and Faf's innings - man, those two were just BRILLIANT!! It might sound silly, but I see Rayudu as a potential captaincy candidate for CSK post Dhoni. Don't be surprised if he is a prime frontrunner for that position. I have a feeling that Raina is on his way out and Rayudu/Jadeja could be competing amongst themselves to become the next captain of CSK post Dhoni. If Rayudu continues like this and reprises the smashing 2018 season, he will have all bragging to stake claim for CSK captaincy.

I would cut Vijay some slack. If Watson can tell from last season that he was backed for all games despite having mediocre returns, why not do the same for Vijay? As Dhoni mentioned in post match interview, we learned today that under lights in the first few overs of the second innings, the ball tends to move a lot here in this ground. Thats where Vijay and Watson were nailed. Rayudu and Faf found it out and played the waiting game and flourished. Vijay and Watson will learn it now and can play a more watchful game next time. I still back Ruturaj over Vijay, but I would give Vijay a few more games till Ruturaj really eases back in.

So happy that CSK book the rut that they had against MI, and beat them!! Best Saturday for me in the past 8 or so months... I am rejoicing the entire evening today here in USA. :D

I'd say gear up to be surprised more by Dhoni this season. I am actually expecting Dhoni to kinda take a backseat this season and maneuver CSK through without contributing much. And.. its not about Dhoni. Its about CSK winning in the end.

Dhoni brought in Chawla and he gave us a wicket. Dhoni changed ends for Ngidi and gave ball to Curran, he got us a wicket. Dhoni brought back Chawla when Surya-Tiwary went well, Chawla got the breakthrough. Man, his captaincy felt as if it didn't miss a beat.

But I would say the decision to send Jaddu-Curran above Jadhav-Dhoni was more a collaborative decision between Dhoni and Fleming/management. Dhoni couldn't have made it alone.

His stats are definitely not up there and he did not have the best of seasons last time around but he showed some real glimpses of his potential with the fifty and that hat-trick. All he needs is some smart coaching and he can be a real star.

Honestly, the hype around Raina is starting to get on my nerves now. Raina wasn't even good in the last two seasons. He had sub-par seasons and played a 'hide and seek' role in 2018/19 and yet CSK won a title and clinched runners up spot. I am frankly surprised that Raina's absence is being drummed up to be such a big hole for CSK. And the 'no left hander theory in the top order' - well CSK won without it today against a champion team like MI. In a team like CSK which has experience like no other, such theories won't play such a significant difference in the end. CSK will find ways to do well without it.

People said we miss Harbhajan big time, but Harbhajan again was not a major impact in the last few years. Now Chawla came to the party.

Well, IPL is back; love the crowd noise to be honest and other sports competitions need to learn something from IPL. MLB was so boring with almost no sound, NFL has just completed one week so need to see more before passing judgment.

the countdown was so realistic, the roar, the chants all seem so realistic. Kudos to the management. Sitting at home on my 86 inch tv, I did not even notice crowd not being there.. except when they zoom out.

On the match, typical CSK, start slow, have a solid partnership, loose wickets again and win in the end?

I am happy, I have IPL and NFL going on right now, all set sports wise till February.

I enjoyed it. They (IPL) did a pretty good job with all those recorded crowd noises, the virtual cheerleaders and the reactive chant audios that accompanied certain players (for e.g. when Dhoni entered, the "Dhoni... Dhoni..." chant was played, which gave the nostalgic feel).

I am only hoping it gets even better as the tournament progresses.

One irritating thing I had was - the USA live telecast on Hotstar was atleast 15 mins behind (3-4 overs behind). As a result, I couldn't access Cricinfo/Twitter/PlanetCricket/etc. as the internet would be spoiling all the fun for me if I logged in to check posts/updates. I am not sure if this is a one-off thing or if it will stay this way. But if it does, this is a major pain point and it dampens my fun of watching the game and tweeting/posting on PC about it.

I think you're doing a massive disservice to both Raina and Harbhajan. I understand you're happy but both are vital cogs in the camp and will surely be missed. I think Raina will actually come back soon.

Honestly even before the game started, I didn't miss them too much. When Raina was still in contention this year for this IPL, I had been saying it here that "this season was going to be a make and break for Raina and he better start coming good or he could see his status/reputation within the CSK camp slipping, where he's been the vice captain". As much as I love Raina's infectious attitude and energy, I have been disappointed with his returns from the last two seasons. For a guy called Mr. IPL, he was pretty much silent in last two seasons and would often get out at crucial times, leaving others with bulk of the work.

I hope he can come back in, but honestly I have not been missing him is all I said.

Also if you guys noticed, Vijay was not out both times in that Pattinson over. The first LBW was clipping top of bails and was "Umpire's call (and Umpire ruled it not out). The second one that got Vijay out, was missing leg stump. And Vijay had a brain fade moment where he just kept walking while Faf was animatedly gesturing to him from behind as to "dude you need to take the review". It was a brain fade moment from Vijay and I hope he notes it down post the game and is given an earful from Fleming and co. Watson asked Vijay before walking off while not taking the review. Vijay just waltz off and gives away his wicket.

Although it’s too early. But lack of a quality spinner will be the biggest weakness for Mumbai. Rahul Chahar bowled well last season, but we have seen numerous times bowlers not getting picked in their first seasons, only to become a little ineffective later. And Krunal isn’t a wicket-taker, he’ll just keep the runs down.

Delhi has an amazing team this season backed up by a really good coach. I would be surprised if they are not in the playoffs this time around.
