Stan Nichols was a phenomenal all-rounder in the interwar years for Essex and England. I currently have him pencilled in as a number eight because although he was capable of truly stellar innings, they did not occur all that often. He is selected first and foremost for his muscular fast bowling - his pace was undiminished despite providing service not only to Essex but also Queens Park Rangers into his late 30s.

I have pencilled Pravin Amre in at number five for now, although he batted mostly at number six for India. A hundred on Test debut in Durban against an attack that included the terrifying duo of Allan Donald and Brett Schultz augured great things, but Amre's career ultimately suffered in comparison with those expectations - despite his average continuing to stand above 40, the poor decision that ended his fallow series against Sri Lanka also ended his Test career. He ended his career a domestic journeyman, playing for all sorts of Ranji teams as well as Boland in South Africa.
