DCU announce Jørn Storgaard as Danish captain for T20Is​

Dansk-Cricket Union (DCU) have made a formal announcement, stating that Jørn Storgaard will be captaining Denmark cricket team in T20 internationals effective immediately. According to sources, the decision was taken unanimously by the board members and team staff. Storgaard debuted in June '00 and has been among the best ODI batters since his introduction. While he did struggle to score runs in Tests, he is enjoying a purple patch this year as Denmark's highest run-scorer in the format. Recently, he scored three consecutive hundreds in the Europa League and was a pivotal player in Denmark's victory.

"I am filled with joy.", said the 25 year-old. "My mum was the one who broke the news to me. She picked the head coach's call and was absolutely flabbergasted with the revelation. I can't believe it honestly. A dream come true for me. I have had talks with the coach and support staff about what they will be expecting from me. We are excited to perform in this new format. I don't know when Denmark will be playing a T20 international game but I know I am highly looking forward to it."

"...indtil mine knæ falder af (...until my knees fall off)...", is what Martin Lundgren said to a reporter when asked about how long will he still be going at the game. (Translated excerpts: ) "I am a simple man. I was never good at academic but was atheletic enough to play for various sports team for my university. Amongst all of them, I really liked cricket, especially the moment when you hear the sound of stumps shattering. Luckily, I was good enough to play at competitive level and decided to make it my profession. That's what has kept me motivated as a pace bowler."

7 years later, he is now the One-Day Cup winning captain of Hovedstaden, presented with a chance to play against the best domestic teams in the world and emerge victorious. "Who knew a farmer's boy from Herlev would be leading his regional team at the biggest stage." Lundgren is known to have never missed a training session at the Danish or Hovedstaden camp and is always the last to leave the gym. "Discipline and consistency is what I learned from my parents and would like to pass it to my own children.", says the 35-year old. "Last week, my young son spotted a white hair in my beard and said you are getting old for an athelete. I just laughed. I am always grateful for the opportunities I get."

"He is a saint who never gets angry at you for making the silliest of mistakes.", adds Ivan Gram on how Lundgren is different from other captains he has played under. "He never becomes negative at any point and we are always open with him, like an elder brother. He does look intimidating on the field but is actually the sweetest person you can think of." Ivan has been gaining traction since his thunderstruck hundred against Vanuatu A last month.

"Golden opportunity for many, especially Ivan Gram. He is very close to breaking into the national side and we are all here for it. Backup keeper's slot is still not fixed and Søren (Berglund) has not given up on international cricket. And Leon Troelsen is already waiting for his chance as our (Denmark's) top-order backup.", says star Danish all-rounder and T20 captain Jørn Storgaard on which players he feel can be seen representing Denmark following the tournament.

Hovedstaden need to be wary of being overconfident as most of the team isn't used to playing on foreign lands and should learn from Nordjylland's mistake in the previous tournament. They lost some very close games and hence couldn't qualify. "Uncharted territory, I know. But we are going to take it one game at a time. That's how we won this year and no need to try something different. I'll tell you what, if we win, Martin will host a huge house-party and you'll get to try his famous muffins." Well, there is something I'm looking forward to now.

Preview: Danish domestic season 2003​

For the first time ever in Denmark cricket's history, Denmark internationals are expected to miss a major portion of the FC competition (Ole Mortensen Cup) due to the upcoming Nations League. Should Denmark reach the final of Nations League, it would mean the top players of Denmark won't be available till 25 February. That means they would only be available for the last 2 rounds of the tournament. And even that is not certain since DCU might prefer to rest the squad players and hence they might skip the whole FC tournament. But DCU officials have ensured that all contract players would take part in the One-Day Cup barring any injury or international commitment.

In the meantime, domestic sides have announced their playing XIs for the first round of OMC. (will add all lineups later)

For the first time ever, DCU made only one change to their contracts list. Olav Nørgaard is part of the central contracts for the first time in his career. He replaced Storm Høj who has now moved to the reserves list. Noah Bendtsen has been removed from the reserves list.

This move does make sense since Storm was never considered to be an all-rounder despite batting at no. 7 for majority of his career. He is still a major figure in Danish cricket and is considered one for the future but his services won't be required much in the all-important year for Denmark. Nørgaard, on the other hand, is a like-for-like replacement for August Eklund while also fulfilling the third pacer's slot if Denmark wants to play both Fredriksson and Oliver Johansson in the team.

Unfortunately, this move could mean the potential end of Noah Bendtsen's international career. The 32-year old has reportedly refrained from commenting and was seen working hard in the nets and gym. He played a pivotal role in Denmark winning the Knockout Trophy in 2000.
