I hope not! Can you pop your pads on and get out there then, please?!

This is more like the England I grew up with. I had been wondering where they'd been hiding all these years! Also, just wanted to say, well done to South Africa for picking themselves up after that first England innings. Up until Amla came in a couple of days ago, I couldn't quite believe that...

Fair play to Bavuma. Having a great knock. What a shocking bowling and fielding display by both sides. It's bad when Root gets wickets. Cook's decision to declare looking even more stupid as every Over goes by. Edit: Sorry Root caught, not bowled. Apologies! After this many overs, the live...

I'm not taking anything away from Amla, or for that matter ABDV, however, if England had clung on to there chances, it would have been a different game, and the pitch is obviously a batting pitch, or we wouldn't have seen so many runs! I said before the match on this thread that I would not...

To be fair, not a lot going on in terms of cricket! This is a very batting friendly pitch. If you don't give you wicket away, many runs to be had. Credot to Amla. Having a hard time and has taken his luck on board. Would have been a different game if he hadn't been dropped on 5.

I really cant understand why Cook declared. I was bemused yesterday, and still am now. With Bairstow smashing it around and Moeen to come, why not let them keep batting and get as big a score as possible. Keep SA in the field and grind them down as much as possible. I think a draw is on the...

Amla is putting a smile on your face as well, I expect? Short worked! Yay!

Probably best to come in with Jonny still in. He's got to keep wicket as well. Maybe should have gone on for a bit longer though, let Stokes have a rest! Moeen will be furious!

I opened up the laptop about 10.30 and went on to BBC cricket and it said "Stokes makes 200" and my brain went haywire. I'd initially thought it was actually 4.30pm and that I'd somehow slept all day!JONNNNNNY! Yes!

Stokes is never going to have an enormous batting average, and in fact probably never a great bowling average. But he just has that amazing trait of having world class performances in his locker. You know that at some point he's going to explode with either bat or ball. Hopefully, in the future...

Seriously? That's terrible. I never wanted Bell to fail, I just didn't want him to be selected, but once he was there, obviously I wanted him to make a score. I think people just like to moan. It's very odd because this is a young(ish) England side that people should be excited about, but the...

No it's not clever at all. That was just a general comment (about the BBC Live Text), it's the same for every game, but Taylor and Root have thrown away their wickets. No-one should be getting 0 on this wicket. I'm a big Taylor fan and I've been wanting him in the team for ages, but playing a...

Not sure if anyone's following the Live Text on BBC, but it's worth checking out just for the doom and gloom of England fans! Apparently losing a wicket or two is akin to a collapse nowadays. I don't think some England fans will be happy unless every innings is 700-0 declared. Whenever an...

I'm pretty sure someone would have said to him at lunch "well done Compo, now time to kick on mate", or words to that effect. But I'm sure he knew what he had to do after a slow start. It's a pity he hasn't gone on to make a ton. I think as he plays more games, he will go on to make some...

You're probably right. I don't follow cricket like I used to, so haven't been keeping abreast of all the bowlers. Rabada looks like a great prospect

SA will be delighted that they've got those catches, especially after England second innings in the previous Test where they were awful in the field. On another note, how disappointing is it that SA have injuries to Steyn and Phillander? Not very for England, of course, because it should allow...

You are right. My point was that it was a very poor rate. I actually think it's a good thing. However, you don't get many number 3's with such a low scoring speed these days. I wouldn't care if Compton played at this speed for the two days but was still in. There is enough fire power in the rest...

England tour to South Africa December 2015/February 2016

If Compton plays positively, but loses his wicket in the 20's and 30's all the time, he would probably be dropped. That's the way of this England team at the moment. He's probably just trying to make sure he doesn't give his wicket away.

I totally agree. However, 3 off 32 is still a shocking rate! I actually don't mind so much, but people like free scoring players, and on the first day of a test match, people will expect a better scoring rate. That's just how people read the game. I am delighted Compton is back in as I've been...
