Ajay Sharma

Yes........ i really wonder how come Ranadeb has still not get selected for international ?? he is the only player who has never bolwed a no ball.

I reckon there must have been a stack of batsmen who have averaged over 60 in the Ranji Trophy. Even today it is a broad competition and in the past, the gap between the best and the worst players would have been huge and probably at some point in the last 20 years, the pitch quality would have been too good for many bowlers to succeed. Indeed, Tendulkar averages 91, Laxman 83 and Dravid 74. A few less than consistent players like Ganguly and Shastri still averaged more than 50. I mean, these are pretty successful players, but these are also insane records.

Has the 3rd highest first-class average of anyone to score 10,000+ first-class cricket but yet only featured in 1 Test and 31 ODI's. He apparently showed glimspes of class in that 1 Test aswell, albeit only averaging 26 from 2 innings.

What's so astonishing about Sharma's career was that he was labelled an "allrounder", despite his incredible first-class record as a batsman and not-so-great record as a bowler. He had a phenomenal strike-rate (for the era that he was playing in) of 90 but yet, inspite of his amazing first-class record, the Indians batted him for the majority of his short-career at number 7 & 8, acouple of times at 6 & 9 and once at number 4 where he smashed 59 not out off 55 balls. His two other half-centuries came off 36 & 47 balls faced. His strike-rate for the era he played in was enough to suggest class and dominance to atleast make the national side?

There was so much emphasis on Tendulkar having to carry the Indian batting during the 1990's but yet inbetween 1990 and 1996, Sharma averaged over 100 in Indian first-class cricket in the Ranji Trophy. Surely this guy could've helped the Indians of the 1990's immensely?

So tell us, Indian fanatics - Why was this amazing talent disgarded?
Quite nicely put. However you could have done without the "fanatic" adjective.

As to the point, India never really had a terrible lack of batting talent at any point of time in their cricketing history perhaps bar the very early stages. Of course, Ajay Sharma's record run in the early 90s should have ideally ensured his berth in the national team. But somehow it did not.

Looking at the records of Indian batsmen in tests from the period 1990 through 1996, (coinciding with Sharma's peak), we have the following figures :

Code:
Player Span Mat	Inns	NO	Runs	HS	Ave	100	50	0
SR Tendulkar	1990-1997	54	81	8	3891	179	53.30	14	16	4
M Azharuddin	1990-1997	54	76	4	3162	192	43.91	12	9	3
NS Sidhu	1990-1997	32	45	0	2122	201	47.15	7	8	4
R Dravid	1996-1997	19	30	3	1420	148	52.59	1	12	0
SC Ganguly	1996-1997	17	26	1	1352	173	54.08	5	4	3
M Prabhakar	1990-1995	33	48	5	1346	120	31.30	1	8	3
SV Manjrekar	1990-1996	28	46	4	1259	104	29.97	1	6	2
NR Mongia	1994-1997	30	44	4	1099	152	27.47	1	4	2
VG Kambli	1993-1995	17	21	1	1084	227	54.20	4	3	3
N Kapil Dev	1990-1994	28	35	3	1002	129	31.31	2	5	3
RJ Shastri	1990-1992	11	17	0	794	206	46.70	3	1	0

Pretty well all batsmen, with the exception of Manjrekar were doing fine, and Manjrekar used to get constantly selected because he was from Mumbai. Kapil, and Prabhakar were allrounders. And Azhar captain, Mongia the keeper.

Plus another factor to be noted is that Sharma had already been selected and discarded. And in Indian cricket, it is extremely hard to make a comeback once you have been dropped, no matter how good you perform in the domestic circuit.

In short he became what Badri sadly could become in a few years time. Just another case of a domestic champ born at the wrong time. A la Brad Hodge, or Stuart Law.

Ranadeb Bose was taken to England during the 07 series and failed to impress completely. And his form has fallen away since then, and hence rightfully is out of the team. India have never been so rich as far as pace attack was concerned till now.

Ranadeb Bose was taken to England during the 07 series and failed to impress completely.

Wait a bit. You are factually incorrect. In England, Bose was given a chnace in just one practice match. Where he picked up most probably six wickets in the first innings. Just imagine- an Asian bowler, travelling to England in that extreme cold, then adapting himself fully with the surroundings and picking up 5+ wickets in the very first match. How many bowlers have achieved this feat? Saying he is too slow is a poor logic. He has picked up wickets consistently in the domestic level. Had he been "too" slow, he could never have faired this better. And his main weapon is not his pace, it his his ability to swing the bowl. That's what has made him this dangerous. Also, few remembers the fact that Maurice Tate and Ranadev Bose are the only two bowlers in cricket who never ever bowled a front foot no ball in any of the matches they had played. Maurice Tate has got name, fame and everything. But see Ranadev, a victim of dirty board politics. The truth is, BCCI is not picking Bose, because he plays for Bengal which is controlled by the CAB or the Cricket Association of Bengal whose President is former ICC supremo Jag Mohan Dalmiya, and Dalmiya has a bitter relationship with the current ruling body of the BCCI, that is why they are not picking Bose. *sigh*

It's not dirty politics!!! He'd just be spanked everywhere. Simple as that.

He'd just be spanked everywhere.

This is where I protest. See his domestic records. He has bowled against Sachin, Rahul, Ajay Jadeja, Laxman, Kaif, and almost all the Indian intl stars. Yet, see his average- see the number of wickets he has picked so far. He has topped the Ranji wickets tally in many a seasons. Still, why isn't he getting picked? Alright, he might get spanked everywhere, but there is a big "MIGHT". What if he turns out to be an excellent bowler? What if he doesn't fail? After how he has performed in the domestic level, he surely deserves to play at least one intl match. The BCCI picks craps like Rohit Sharma in each and every match and team India still wins matches, then surely picking Bose for one match will not do us any harm.

Look, you can't pick a guy simply based on his record. The selectors sure as hell know a lot more about cricket and spotting talent than I do. Maybe his record is good, I never disputed that, but they most probably see some flaw in him that they think would prevent him from succeeding at the highest level. Rohit Sharma didn't have that good a record when he first came into the team. Of course, playing for Mumbai was a factor but they could have chosen anyone from Mumbai. He also had something the selectors thought could take him a long way.

As for metallics' point, that's domestic cricket. I'm just making an assessment/prediction based on what I've seen of him.

Indian players First Class career records are distorted by the number of weak teams in their domestic competitions.

Joginder Sharma's bowling stats are a fine example.
