Couldn't find an existing thread, so here's a fresh one for discussion.

T20 cricket will be the flavour of the next couple of months with the World Cup and Champions League on the horizon. So post an XI of the best T20 players since the format started in 2003. Here's mine:

1 Chris Gayle
2 David Warner
3 Shane Watson
4 Kevin Pietersen
5 Andrew Symonds
6 Brendon McCullum (wk)
7 Shahid Afridi
8 Stuart Broad
9 Umar Gul
10 Saeed Ajmal
11 Lasith Malinga

I'd pick the same i guess. But i'd pick an All-time T20 XI based on all the players i've seen in my lifetime of watching cricket, which would have a few excellent blokes whose peaks happened before T20's existed.

Sanath Jayasuriya
Chris Gayle
Adam Gilchrist+
Kevin Pietersen
Andrew Symonds
Andrew Flintoff
Chris Cairns
Lance Klusener
Wasim Akram
Saqlain Mushtaq

^Yeah Mitch Johnson has a pretty impressive T20 record actually - could have had him at #8 instead of Broad I guess.

Right, not entirely sure how I feel about that. what I think makes it difficult is that in twenty20 because the game is so quick, all of a sudden a quick 20 or two economical overs is worth picking someone for. you also have to have batsmen that can stay in, ones to launch chases and finishers.

it leaves a lot of nuance in the jobs a player dpes but no team really has version of every possible role so they invariably end up needing an extra batsman or extra bowler to play role that in one team one guy does by himself. shane watson is a good enough first change pace option, but sri lanka will have mathews down the order providing that. shahid provides a finisher and strangling option, but england will look for morgan to finish and tredwell or someone like that to strangle.

this isn't a problem when getting to choose anyone from any time, so I found once I had 10 players I had no idea who to pick as the 11th as they seemed to be just floating in the middle of the team with nothing to do.

opener was hardest, there are so many openers that provide different things. dilshan can launch the innings, jayawardena anchors and then builds, mccullum is also a wicket keeper etc etc.

also it's tough to know how to weigh IPL versus international. shaun marsh is a lock if you rate the former better. also you have someone like mendis who's stats are ridiculous and has played enough matches to be comparable to anyones t20 career, it's just that you know from watching the game he may never be able to recapture that so perhaps it should be assumed he's not an all time XI quality player.

^Yeah it's a funny selection in many ways - do you pick 5 guys who can both bat and bowl a bit for versatility? or pick all big hitters in the batting? or pick 4 spinners because they seem to have the best record? Plenty of different ways to do it I think.

IPL/any domestic comp. vs international is a good debate too...
