Ashes Cricket General Discussion

Remember this is not a sprint. Each and every aspect is being looked at. At this mo the focus is on making the human and ai batting more satisfying and steps in the right direction have been made.

With ai batting the focus is to try and get some way towards playing the ball on merit rather than the timing of the shot down to ball speed: finding that sweet spot is quite a tricky but it plays much better than it has done.

...

It is very much an exercise of empirical scientific experiment....When the results start to come through its very satisfying but the work in the lab is sometimes a grind....and I am just an observer, we are not the ones doing the actual work in that sense!

Ai batting is much improved and makes the whole human bowling experience much more satisfying. However they are playing well but not scoring positively enough.

@zimrahil surely post of the day, surely?

@Dutch this is very encouraging to hear. It would be great if we could get to a point where there is a bit less premeditation and dependency on aerial or pitch markers...though I know this is not easy without slowing the delivery down.

Are you and the team actually working to predefined test cases or just playing the game and seeing how it feels? Both are valid means of judging changes but the latter is more likely to create holes in test coverage. For instance, I would be interested to know whether all changes to, say, batting are tested in all cameras or whether testers tend to test in their preferred set-up etc.

Anyway, I appreciate the efforts of all involved, unsung or otherwise, and am looking forward to seeing the results.

I like a certain set up but I definitely test on different pitch types and camera’s although my favourite camera is pro mode but I use batting far and close as well....personally I use the pitchmarker as I need a bit of time to select the appropriate shot but I hope we can get as far as the player being able to play the ball late and still produce a good shot.....it is a good point that we need to be testing in different scenario’s and difficulty settings to make sure things are right. One of my hopes is that we might get an overview of what each difficulty means in terms of settings and from there the user can tweak things confidently knowing that the setting they have to start with corresponds with the chosen difficulty level: so for example pro batting corresponds with x y and z in the custom batting options etcetera.....

Hey guys. So excited that this forum is back on track with regards to positive critiscism, some decent feedback from beta testers and actual information about the patch.

Maybe all the hate really was stemming from being left in the dark for too long (for both the average gamer as well as beta tester).

Anyways the past is the past. I think I read somewhere that the developers are working on commentary glitches as well. Any news on that?
And I'm really not in the mood for making a joke about dean johnes (sorry guys )

Commentary may well be in the pipeline (not sure where you got the info) but it has not been brought to light this time. Probably not what you wanted to hear.

So in the human batting sessions I have had I have really had to knuckle down: waiting for that right ball, trying to squeeze the gaps.....as soon as I started to try playing out of the ‘v’ to balls that weren’t quite wide enough I got myself into trouble....
....my last three 25 odd over sessions....35 for 5, 43 for 3 and 62 for 4.

Now this is of course also down to my batting “skill” but before I could score quite easily at over 5 an over.....

It makes me want to start and complete a series, the narrative, the to and fro is back in the game as far as human batting is concerned.

But it is very stop start at the mo because other aspects still need tuning. It is just testing, testing, testing. What If I do this or that? What happens if I come out slogging away in a test or in a t20? And the ai?

Questions, questions, questions.

It is very much an exercise of emperical scientific experiment....When the results start to come through its very satisfying but the work in the lab is sometimes a grind....and I am just an observer, we are not the ones doing the actual work in that sense!

There are some unsung heroes around the place who quietly go about doing their thing, ignoring the noise and getting on with it.

Me? I’m a loudmouthed lout who needs a kick up the Gordon Ramsey.....praise to the unsung heroes!

Mmm just tell me what is human six hitting like in first class games first - can you still effortlessly hit them out of the traps :p

No you can't. It is definitely harder. Some of the testers have even suggested too hard

It is gratifying to hear that you are using ProCam...as that's my preference as well. It does have a few idiosyncrasies compared to others...but I stick with it.

The general point on testing, though, is that it is very difficult to get good test coverage without a proper test strategy or relying on a few individuals to 'try it out'. Take fielding, for instance, it is not just a case of seeing whether the AI sets appropriate fielding in the context of the game, you also need to test the effectiveness of the field. This is difficult to do with just a try-it-and-see approach (although I've no idea whether this is what is happening...the testing could be much more rigorous). However, if you want to test, say, the effectiveness of a full slip cordon you would need to, at a high level, test how many edges went to each slip position, how many were caught, how many were dropped, how many dropped short, how many went over, how many went through (all valid cases for slip cordons) and do this for every type of pace bowler, for every delivery type, for every match type, for every pitch condition, with every ball condition, with every type of batsman, with every type of confidence (both bowler and batsman), with all skill levels. And you compare this to expect results based on real-life stats. The only way you are going to do this is with good test automation.

Obviously this level of testing may be hard to do but low test coverage tends to allow for more errors to get into releases...which is hard for user testing to spot but will bite once it goes out of beta.

I just hope that people appreciate that the beta testers have a tough job to do if the earlier test cycles are low on coverage. Beta testers should be applauded for what they do and not criticised if errors get by them.

I don't think anyone has criticised beta testers. Most of the criticism I've seen was targeted towards Big Ant for releasing the game in its current form and lack of support & communication.

Again 6 hitting should also depend upon
Match condition/ stage
Pitch type
Batsman bowler confidence
Etc.

A wild hit by a tailender under pressure, going back over the keeper for a 4 also adds a lot to the game.

We have taken a lot of criticism. Go back and read. To say it was never targeted at us is way off the mark. Yeah most of the stuff was aimed elsewhere but to say no one has criticised us, is not true

You hit the nail on the head. We become bad people over here but i am happy that there is some information coming out .
