Brute hitting and shear pace spark a convincing 34 run win against Pakistan that included the much talked about five wicket maiden over.
Heading into the match, Australia have relied on the openers and the pace attack to set up match point in previous matches. This was again the case from the outset, with Warner and Watson putting on a 51 run stand from just 5.4 overs. Warner departed on 26 off 18 balls but Watson proved warm up form meant nothing finishing with 81 from 49 balls, falling short of the first ever T20I hundred by an Australian.
David Hussey came in needing to steady the ship after two quick wickets left Australia 2/64. Given their previous outings as pointed out in the preview, a few fans may have been nervous of another T20 collapse by Australia. David Hussey started steadily before launching Sami for four 6s from his third over. He ended up with 53 off 29 balls, with Australia in good shape to smash a massive score off the power hitting of White. But in a shock move, Michael Hussey was sent out to partner Watson, who fell later in the over to eventually bring White in.
White didn?t last long but what was to follow will probably be remembered more than the result, Watson?s 81 or David Hussey four 6s off the Sami over. █Haddin departed off the first ball of the last over of the innings. Mitchell Johnson who was sent in ahead of Steven Smith, departed for a golden duck the next ball. This left Aamer on a hattrick which in the end wasn?t meant to be, but the team got a team hattrick through the run out of Michael Hussey who wanted the strike. Steven Smith then wanted the strike back and ended up following Michael Hussey back to the pavilion and suddenly Pakistan had four wickets in four balls! Tait managed to keep out five in five balls but showed his bunny nature giving Pakistan the now famous, five wicket maiden.
Pakistan chasing a daunting 192, never really threatened with the constant flow of wickets through the pressure of the rapidly increasing run rate required. Afridi provided a glimmer of hope when he smashed Steven Smith for 14 off his first 3 balls. But the pace of Tait ended up being too much for Afridi and with the off stump bail sent flying, so too were Pakistan?s hopes.
Pakistan ended up being bowled out for 157 with Tait and Johnson the pick of the bowlers while Nannes did his best impersonation of a wayward Tait with 3 wickets at a costly 41. Michael Clarke clearly wanted to forget about the 5 wicket maiden when he said “It’s a very good start from the boys, 191 runs in 19 overs”. In the end a very satisfying victory, the one possible change could be bringing Ryan Harris in for Michael Hussey to form the quad pace attack.
