Australia secured an easy 96 run victory over Sri Lankans to register their record 13th ODI win at Centurion on Friday. A century from skipper Ricky Ponting and devastating spell of bowling from Brett Lee led Australia to victory in their opening Super Six match.

Australia bowled out Sri Lanka for 223 in 47.4 overs, as Lee and Glen McGrath dismissed the top order. Sri Lanka lost four wickets for just six runs, Jayasuriya retired hurt on one, Marvan Atapattu fell to a return catch by Lee for 16, Hashan Tillekeratne was bowled by McGrath for 21 and Mahela Jayawardene was caught by Gilchrist off Lee for a duck. At 48 for four Sri Lanka had hopes only on Aravinda de Silva to save their plight.

Aravinda batted superbly with some support from Kumar Sangakkara (20) and later Chaminda Vaas (21). A partnership of 54 runs off only 40 balls for the ninth wicket with Fernando helped Sir Lanka cross the 200-mark. Aravinda score 92 off 94 balls that included 9 fours and 4 sixes before he was dismissed by Hogg.

Australian pace-attacker Brett Lee’s action seemed to be questionable, as he bowled a short thunderbolt that badly bruised Sanath Jayasuriya's forearm and fractured his left thumb in the second over of the innings. Sri Lanka's leading run scorer in the first round with 269 runs, was forced to retire hurt and could play no further part in the World Cup. Brett Lee finished with a spell of 3 for 52 of his 10 overs.

Earlier, opener Adam Gilchrist initiated a superb run rate as posted a mammoth total of 319 runs for 5 wickets in their allotted 50 overs.

Gilchrist added 75 with Mathew Hayden (22) and then 106 with Ponting before he was run out on 99 off 88 balls, that included 14 fours and two sixes. Skipper Ponting brought up his fifty off 66 balls and then raced to his 12th one-day century, and the fourth of his captaincy.

Sri Lanka lost an early chance to restrict the innings when Sangakkara missed stumping Ponting and two run outs when on 36 and 72. Ponting scored 114 from 106 balls that included eight fours and two sixes, and added 112 with Damien Martyn (52), before being dismissed by Fernando.

Dilhara Fernando finished with three for 47, the best figures of the innings.
