So I began my career mode primarily as a batsman who can bowl some handy leg spin though, like the majority of people who post here, I seem to have segued into the role of a leg spinner who can give it a whack down the order (though my recent test score of 80 from 123 was an attempt at atonement for my previous hit n' hope approach). As much as I love turning the screws on the opposing team and watching them flail incompetently as I drift one onto leg stump from outside off, only for the ball to turn about-face and decide that the off-stump would in fact appear more attractive in a horizontal position, it never provides me with the same thrill of coming in at #5 with the knowledge that Mitchell Johnson will momentarily be throwing down fireballs and only I, Brian Lara-esque in stature, Lara Croft-esque in ability, stand between him and the wooden effigies that he will attempt to ignite. Unfortunately, despite assuming a defensive mentality, my batting is consistently inconsistent, though I seem to be increasingly flexible with my range of shots and ability to leave the ball; slowly but surely. Thus, bowling has been the main reason for my retention in every side in which I've played, resulting in a call up to the England 20/20 squad following a victory in the IPL as captain of Royal Challengers Bangalore. A couple of series wins later, Eion Morgan is unjustifiably snubbed by the upper echelon and me, your humble narrator, is gifted with the responsibilities of the bloke whose initial actions include participating in what is probably -the- most anticipated coin toss taking place that day anywhere in the world. 20/20 happens to be my forté and we win a few matches under my disciplined but liberal (think KP-era bum patting - on-field only) regime.
After one match I decided to check my selection status for Test/ODI cricket and was pleasantly surprised to find that I had been inducted as a regular member of both and that, following the one match series against Bangladesh, the next one was the Ashes. So, under the captaincy of Alastair Cook, we meet expectations and annihilate Bangladesh in both the Test and ODI series. Next up: Australia. As I'm reading the weather/team sheets prior to the toss, all I'm hoping for is to grab a few wickets and score at least a 30 or so. Toss-time. So there's Clarke, who's the guy next to him? Doesn't look like Cook. Ah, wait... I'm the captain? But I've only played one Test match and I'm 18 years old! I wasn't even informed of my ascent to immediate captaincy before this match. *Panic stations*. Proceed to get bowled out for 201 (nicked it to Haddin for an ephemeral 1 from 20 trying to play a 'Captain's Innings'), manage to reduce Aus to 165/6 before Haddin and Johnson put on a huge partnership and finish with a team score of 389 all out, 2nd innings: my team is in trouble at 78/4, I manage to get my half-century at a SR of 50 whilst watching my team-mates play lofted cover drives, convinced that the RR -must- stay above 5 for victory to be achieved (3 days left)... before getting out in the teens. 1 wicket left, I decide to go for broke and play some risky shots, get out for 80 with a current lead of 110.
Aus will inevitably win this first Ashes match and I don't really have any qualms about actually being captain, I quite enjoy being able to swap bowlers around, it's really just the realism aspect.
TLDR: Won a few 20/20 matches, haven't even played a single ODI, play one Test match, selected for captaincy ahead of an Ashes series at 18 years old. Anyone else have a problem with this?
All said and done, I love this game.
