I voted for John Entwhistle, but really isnt voting for best Bassist a bit like voting for best cloud in the sky. They are there but does anyone really care :p

I think bassists are incredibly under-rated. Ok, they don't usually stand-out from the crowd, they don't generally sing (Its actually fair difficult to sync you voice and play bass, I know, i've tried! and failed)

I'm an idiot for not listening to much older stuff, as I know there has been some cracking artists from before my time. But from the bands that I listen to now, there's not many absolutely amazing bassists out there. I quite like Green Day's bassists, Mike Dirnt, just because they've been around for years and he's still doing it, what, they're 20years old now? Big big ask for a band, especially in times like these.

I'd be inclined to say AAR (All American Rejects) bassists, and lead singer, is quite decent BUT doesn't really do much. Like I say, its pretty difficult to sing as well as play bass as its a very rhythmic guitar, but he does it, so its not impossible.

There are better bassists than the two i've mentioned, but they generally belong to the heavier artists, Nickelback's bassist is pretty good, i've seen them live and he's got some skill.

I agree that RHCP's bassist is pretty good, never seen them preform live, so can't really judge.

The thing with bass players, is that you really have to judge their live performances because in a studio, its quite difficult to hear the bass.

I saw Flea live he blew my mind

Agreed.

In regards to the Chili Peppers you can normally hear the bass. Flea changes it up and he doesn't just play the root of the chord. I'll try and give some examples that you can look at later.

do youself a favor and check out'Cliff Burton solo" on youtube
Absolutely amazing:hpraise

I wasn't being serious. He's one of the worst I've ever heard.

I'm even worse. I'm a complete novice when it comes to music. To be fair, I was watching a live recording on YouTube waiting for the fire-breathing and was thinking 'What the hell is he doing to the bass'?

Agreed.

Around the World has quite a strong bass background, it was more prevalent in the older stuff, Blood Sugar, Mother's Milk, etc.

Indeed you are. I know you like your guitars (of course you do, you have a good taste). If you don't own something from each of Hendrix, Zeppelin, Guns'n'Roses, AC/DC, then you need to think about buying something. Currently listening to a live performance of "Since I've been loving you" by Zeppelin from about 1973, Jimmy Page is simply mesmerising on the guitar. I'd also say Iron Maiden, but they are a bit heavier. Oh and I'm a big fan of BB King too, very Blues, but oh such a good guitarist.
