Champions League Thread (the dawn of time - 2014)

Chelsea and PSG will show some fight against each other and Barca, RM & Bayern have chances to crush their opponents. No Lewa this time will be nightmare for Dortmunds.

I don't see anyone other than United being "crushed", BVB might not be as good as they were last season, but they're still a threat to anyone that doesn't take them seriously and they have a great manager in Klopp, and Atletico, the team that sits 2nd in La Liga who are built for knockout competitions such as this one, who also have a great manager in Simeone are not pushovers, in fact, they're most fans' and pundits' dark horse to win it all.

I wouldn't completely write United off. It's a funny old game this football lark.

Relatively speaking they aren't really much/any worse than the Liverpool side who won it.

Now come on lets be honest, they're going to get absolutely smashed home and away.

Football is amazing.. You just can't predict the result.
Moyes won 2 matches in a row so its not easy to say anything related to utd-bayern match :p

Why do we always get screwed by referees in Europe, that goal by Welbeck should have stood. And wtf was he doing in that 1on1? Bayern were there for the taking today.
We shall see, I predict 4-0 to Bayern

Well that prediction came on well

That 1 v 1 flop by Welbeck is essentially why Hodgson should not pick him in ENGs W Cup squad.

Otherwise i must say, I am surprised to see United did well enough to stay in the game. Showed some good tactical awareness.

Brilliant game between Barca & Athletico also, will be interesting to see if Costa & Pique recover for the 2nd leg.

Well.. an utter shocker to see United are still holding on to their chances rather than gifting it away to Bayern just like they are doing with the 3 pts scheme in the PL. But, I also think Bayern are damn overrated. Itz just because of the one sidedness of the Bundesliga that their records afe nearly perfect. I won't be surprised if Manchester defeat them at Munich which I believe is highly possible.

Meanwhile, Barcelona missed a clear chance of winning this one. They had the advantage in the ppoint that Costa was not playing.. Although I still believe Bar?a can wrap it up.. Atletico are the team to beat and its going to be a hell of a task for the Blauragnas to do it.

No it's it not. it's because they absolutely fingered barcelona over two legs last year.

I actually think if welbeck could sort his head out he'd be an absolutely gun forward, he has pace, presence, quick feet and control, the problem with him is he thinks in terms of the highlights reel and not in effective football.

he's not direct enough in his decision making but he has the ability to get himself in to positions to make decisions.

also, it's funny how the timing of an incident can effect how dramatic it is, the disallowed goal* in the first three minutes was one of the most rubbish decisions I've seen. high feet for taking the ball off a player who was stooping down and it hadn't even made his head AND he played the bottom of the ball? I've watched it again on youtube and his foot is barely above his waist.

*it's arguable he wouldn't have scored seeing as the whistle did go and who knows who heard it, whether the bayern players had stopped or even welbeck had only been able to lash the ball into the net because he wasn't under any pressure.

Buttner simply has to start over Evra in the second leg. As for Bayern, thought Muller and Kroos were terrible and Mandzukic should have started over the former. Also, Boateng is god fishing awful.

Nice one from Rooney to make the most of Schweinsteiger's well timed challenge btw. On the contrary, Valencia got away with a certain second yellow.

Bayern would have won if they didn't piss about too much in the final third, too much passing in the box just like Arsenal. I would've played 2 up top against United but i'm assuming that's not how Guardiola likes to play.

As for the disallowed goal, It's a tough one. You can see why the referee didn't allow it in real time but the replays show it was probably an incorrect decision.
