It seems that the Tamil Nadu Association have set out to build the world's largest stadium with a seating capacity beating that of Eden Gardens and the MCG. More importantly, they are building a stadium with a retractable roof that will ensure that no match is washed out. They say it will be ready for the 2011 World Cup (WOW!)

If they can deliver this, it would be a huge boost for the cricket watchers of Chennai who have been witness to some historic ties in the city. This stadium is being built near Kanchipuram district, but its just 25kms from Chennai. Because of the rain, international cricket in Chennai/Tamil Nadu has been badly hit in the past few years. Hope this ground ensures that we are never hit by the rains.

Do the guys on the roof and stuff count towards capacity though, or is it number of seats? I guess we don't have a real number anyway, but that was the deal with the MCG in the 70s; the capacity had to be reduced because local laws determined that having heaps of standing people was a bit of a risk.

It would also matter who comes in to do the work. Docklands is far from perfect and has shown that a roof isn't an excuse to ignore the groundwork and other such problems facing a cricket ground. The grass still gets wet and the low lights are an issue for fielders. I imagine the low dew point in humid India would be a difficult problem for a closed stadium.

I guess it should be with the seating capacity.

Regarding the roof, not sure how they are going to go about doing it. Knowing how they work in India, I expect the job to face quite a bit of problems on its way.

Nothing beats the Beijing's bird's nest, but it will be really great, if they are able to make it by 2010, really leading a way to the commonwealth games and 2011 World Cup..:D..:D..

I cannot possibly see this being ready by 2011. They haven't been able to build a flyover to ease traffic in Mumbai since I moved back there, in 1999.

Construction in Chennai is very clinical, though. Flyovers are built in two weeks, large homes in about a month. A big stadium shouldn't take more then three years surely.

50-60000, World's largest stadium??? I think not.

lol, yeah, maybe the biggest "cricket" but not as a whole.

Not even biggest for cricket Usy, by a long way.

The world's biggest stadium WAS the Strahov stadium in the Czech Republic, but thats no longer used as a stadium, its capacity was 220,000. The biggest in use is in North Korea with a capacity of 150,000.

Cricket wise, I believe Salt Lake Stadium holds 120,000 (Think its been used for Cricket). MCG 100,000. Eden Gardens 90,000. Sydney 83,500. Thern there are quite a few around the 60,000 mark.

I read an article on this and they never confirmed the capacity.
All that they said at this stage is that it would rival the MCG and the Eden Gardens in terms of capacity.

We already have enough big stadiums in India with the Eden Gardens holding 100,000 , the DY Patil stadium holding 65,000,the new revamped Wankhede Stadium all set to have an upgraded capacity of 65,000 as well.
Bangalore,Ahmedabad,Mohali,Jaipur are all world class stadia now with capacities of about 40,000 and above.

I'd like to see a pitch imported from Australia or South Africa - something with a lot of pace and bounce for the quicks.

I'm just going by what was linked in the first post.

Well that's not strictly true, if I follow that link, I get an article on bradman, but there's a link at the bottom of that ;)
