West End Redbacks players Jason Borgas, Jake Brown, Dan Cullen, Mark Cosgrove, Cameron Borgas, Nathan Adcock, Gary Putland, Matthew Elliott, Paul Rofe, Peter George and Jamie Smith have all signed new contracts with the club ahead of the Ford Ranger One Day Cup.
The West End Redbacks bowler Cullen Bailey will be unavailable to play for four months due to a broken leg.
The 22 year old suffered the injury shortly before the Redbacks started their Ford Ranger Cup campaign against the Victorian Bushrangers at the Melbourne Cricket Ground and his morale has been described as 'rock bottom'.
Victorian Bushrangers v West End Redbacks, Melbourne Cricket Ground
The Victorian Bushrangers won the toss and, predictably, elected to bat first. Their innings started well with Matthew Innes hitting a six off the bowling of Shaun Tait, but Innes was out soon after, bowled by Tait for 16 runs off 10
balls.
Andrew Cook was caught out in the slips for a golden duck to give the away team the advantage and, although he did not get a hat trick, Tait did get his third wicket of the over with Bryce McGain bowled for 6 off 2 balls.
There were signs of a fight back but they were short lived with the prized wicket of international batsman Brad Hodge for 15 off 19 balls, caught off Tait.
Former international bowler Jason Gillespie removed Craig Simmons, the opening batsman, caught, for 17 off 32 balls. At this stage, the Victorian Bushrangers were 61/5.
Cameron White had made 21 runs off 48 balls when he was caught in the deep off the bowling of Dan Cullen, and the wicket made David Hussey lose his composure. He was out soon after as well, caught square of the wicket off the bowling of Mark Cleary for 36 off 44 balls.
Adam Crosthwaite was out in the same fashion for just 1 off 8 balls, Mick Lewis was caught in the slips cordon for 1 off 14 balls and Shane Harwood was caught down the ground off Cullen for 2 off 14 to finish the home team's innings.
The Victorian Bushrangers were all out for just 134 after 32.4 overs in perfect batting conditions on a pitch tailor made for it. The West End Redbacks had a great chance to get off to a perfect start in the Ford Ranger Cup.
The Redbacks got off to a positive start in reply but Matthew Elliot was caught by Harwood off the bowling of Lewis for 17 off 23 balls to get the breakthrough for the Bushrangers.
Captain Nathan Adcock had scored 40 runs off 81 balls when he was out leg before wicket to McGain, and Mark Cosgrove lasted just 3 balls for 2 runs, caught by White off Lewis, to put some doubt in the minds of the visitors.
They were just 19 runs away from victory when Cameron Borgas was caught by Hodge for Lewis' third wicket for 8 off 11 balls.
Daniel Christian, the number three, was caught by Hodge again off Harwood this time for a well made 37 off 65 balls.
The wicket keeper Graham Manou did the job though with 3 off 17 balls to give the West End Redbacks an important victory at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
Match Result
Victorian Bushrangers innings: 134 all out [32.1 overs] (Tait 4/62)
West End Redbacks innings: 135/5 [35.2 overs]
West End Redbacks won by 5 wickets
The win leaves the Redbacks at the top of the Ford Ranger Cup table, level on 4 points with the SpeedBlitz Blues and the Queensland Bulls, but with a superior net run rate.
