Central Contracts Introduced

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has taken a step forward last night by announcing that they will have a Central Contract system. “Every test playing nation except for Zimbabwe has a system in place so we decided to join them” said BCB president Ali Asghar. The move is seen as a positive step towards a more professional Bangladesh cricket team one where the players don’t have to worry about other issue except for cricket. 18 contracts were offered with the highest going to captain Habibul Bashar “He really deserves every thing he gets, he has been a brilliant leader and has helped us through a very tough time” added Asghar.

The selectors and coach Dav Whatmore worked together to decide who deserved the contracts. “We are very happy with the players we have chosen and we believe the 18 who have been will play a major part in the future of Bangladeshi cricket” said Whatmore

The two major issues in terms of selection have not yet been decided with both wicket-keepers and both opening batsmen selected “We felt that if all four of these players were pushing for spots they deserved a contract” spoke chief selector Faruque Ahmed “It is always good to see competition for spots this is a sign of depth which is something Bangladeshi cricket has lacked of too long” he added.

A vice captain is set to be announced when the final side is chosen before the first test and Dav Whatmore gave us an indication on who it might be “We haven’t made a final decision as of yet but I feel it will be one of the younger members of the team.” said Whatmore who’s position in amongst all the changes in Bangladeshi cricket seems safe.

There were no major surprises in the list but a few positive signs for some of the fringe players such as Shafaq Al-zabir and Ahsanullah Hasan. “They have certainly been catching our attention” said Habibul Bashar the Bangladeshi cricket captain who commented on the new system “I really like that we are following the ideas that have been set out by other countries its one thing to be original but it’s a good thing to be learning from the best in the world”

With the first test against Australia set to take place on the 9th of April get ready to see a more positive team who has had a lot of faith shown in them. Look out for a few new names that have emerged in the last year.

Test Series Preview

Both Australia and Bangladesh have chosen their squads for the 1st Test with a few fresh faces already appearing. Mushfiqur Rahim and Saqibul Hasan are a certainty to play and Tamim Iqbal is still competing with Javed Omar with both players being named in the 12-man team. Australia has named a very strong line up with Phil Jaques named in the 12-man squad alongside Shane Watson to replace Damien Martyn and Michael Clarke.

Mohammed Ashraful has been overlooked for Shahriar Nafees to take the vice captaincy. ?Our fans were calling for Mohammed Ashraful to become vice-captain but we believe Shahriar has the batting talent and the temperament to replace Habibul when he decides to leave the sport? says BCB president Ali Asghar ?After captaining Bangladesh A on so many occasions and leading the team well we thought he was the right man for the job? he added.

Javed Omar is favored to retain his spot in the side because of his ability to stay in for a long innings but Iqbal?s overwhelming talent might swing the selectors votes. Chief selector Faruque Ahmed said, ?We are happy with the side and we hope we can be competitive throughout the entire tour?. Australia are red hot favourites with Bangladesh having no expectations placed upon them but if anyone can pull out a performance against the best side in the world it will be quite an achievement.

The players to watch in this series are Shane Watson and Phil Jaques for Australia who are looking to ensure their spots in the line up. For Bangladesh watch Abdur Razzak and Mushfiqur Rahim to ensure their spots in the team.

We will be interviewing a player after the 1st Test match and it is up to you who we talk to the choices are in our reader?s poll. The First Test starts on the 9th of April in the best of two series.

1st Test v Australia (9th of April 2006)

Pre-Match

Australia has gone into this match with an experiences bowling attack and a very strong batting line up and would be the best in the world in both departments

Bangladesh have made some very positive moves by bringing in many new faces but they will have to face the best and it should be a very difficult task to pressure the Australians.

The Weather conditions for this match are cloudy for the first day of play and are expected to stay that way for the rest of the match. The pitch is made for a pace bowler, which is a surprise for a Bangladeshi wicket, but the spinners will still be able to turn it especially Shane Warne. The ground is in good shape, but the outfield is average so don?t expect things to be flying across the deck. Well the match is getting started as we speak. The first test between Australia and Bangladesh is set to begin and we join both captains at the toss.

Bashar: Tails!

Interviewer: Habibul Bashar the Bangladeshi captain has called tails and its? a heads! What do you want to do Ricky?

Ponting: We?ll have a Bat

Interviewer: Interesting decision does the cloud cover or the pitch worry you at all

Ponting: Clouds are looming but it is expected to be the same for right over the 5 days and the pitch can only get worse from today.

Interviewer: Who drops out of the 12-man squad today?

Ponting: Andy Bichel will be carrying our drinks today.

Interviewer: Thank you, now Habibul bowling first today how are you going to go about it?

Bashar: Well the conditions are good for bowling today but they are going to get worse throughout the week so we will have to work hard and get some wickets

Interviewer: Javed Omar or Tamim Iqbal who pulls through to play today?

Bashar: Tamim will be playing (cheers go up from the crowd) and we hope he can be a revelation up the top of the order like Shahriar has become.

Interviewer: Speaking of Shahriar Nafees any thought on his selection as vice captain?

Bashar: I was one of the people who chose him, in the locker room he shows great leadership and even though he is only young himself he has taken Tamim Iqbal and many other youngsters under his wing?

Interviewer: Good luck today Habibul, there it is Australia has won the toss and Ricky Ponting has elected to bat.
