Just a couple of questions. I know the size of the grounds in Austrlaia. But does anyone know the size of the grounds in SA and England? What are their biggest grounds? I always thought that the Wanderers was a massive ground, but I've noticed lately watching videos and it looks pretty small.

Grounds in RSA are small like in India. Some English grounds are also small.

Australia has biggest grounds in world and by huge margin.

I used to have reasonably good data on SA, I know most of the World Cup venues were very little. The info should be mostly accessible, if not as nicely organised as www.austadiums.com

I think there are some helpful wikipedia entries, though and you can slowly trawl through cricinfo for grounds.

Major venues in South Africa
Durban (Kingsmead) 25k
Cape Town (Newlands) 25k
Port Elizabeth (St George's) 19k
Jo'burg (Wanderers) 34k
Centurion 20k
Bloemfontein 20k
East London 15k

Major venues in England & Wales
Lords 32k
The Oval 23.5k
Edgbaston 21k
Old Trafford 22k
Headingley 17k
Trent Bridge 15.35k
Riverside 17k
Sophia Gardens 6.5k (15k planned expansion)
Rose Bowl 6.5k (20k temp, 25k planned expansion)

I terms of capacity Indian grounds average 40K

Does anyone know the length of the boundaries? That's what I was referring to. The boundary size.

Trickier info, but obtainable. Distance at the ropes is another story though.

Major venues in South Africa
Durban (Kingsmead) 140 x 120m
Cape Town (Newlands) 130 x 130m
Port Elizabeth (St George's) 135 x 125m
Jo'burg (Wanderers) 150 x 125m
Centurion 145 x 125m
Bloemfontein 155 x 135m
East London 140 x 135m

Major venues in England & Wales
Lord's 155 x 130m
The Oval 145 x 140m
Edgbaston 140 x 140m
Old Trafford 135 x 135m
Headingley 140 x 140m
Trent Bridge 140 x 140m
Riverside 155 x 145m
Sophia Gardens 125 x 125m
Rose Bowl 160 x 150m

With the key exception of the Rose Bowl, which resembles a classic Australian football oval to a T, most of these grounds are either irregular fields or rectangular rather than oval, so you can imagine the listed dimensions neglect the length of the longest boundaries, at the corners. An interesting point is that the surface area of the Rose Bowl is in fact about the same as Old Trafford. You can see the straight and square boundaries are significantly shorter; the tradeoff is that midwicket/cover boundaries are much longer.

Most grounds in India are decent sized. Eden Gardens and Chepauk are huge!

Chepauk :noway Even biggest sixes are just over 90 meters there. Same as Mohali and Mohali is like childs playground.

Even Tuaha can hit 6 here.

90m is a fair sized boundary. A 90m hit at the Gabba clears the rope. The difference is in the short boundaries. Wanderers is an elongated oval, shaped like a running track. The straight boundaries are as good as any, about 90m at the longest, but a square hit might only need to clear 60m. It makes a huge difference because batsmen will target a short boundary and ignore, or at least play conservatively towards the long one. 80m all around would prove more difficult to attack.

The MCG is massive for a cricket ground in terms of capacity and field size isn't it?

Does anyone know a ground in NZ that is not a rugby ground? They all have one or two really small boundaries that are about 50m. I remember Mustard got a leading edge off the back of the bat the went for a six early this year.
