WEST INDIES vs SRI LANKA
World Cup, Quarter Final 3 at The Oval

Sri Lanka might have managed to defeat India in the opening round by the narrowest possible margin, but the West Indies with their bevy of batsmen and fast bowlers were a completely different proposition. One that nobody was expecting the underdogs to overcome.

And well... they tried their best. After the West Indies chose to bat first, they did lose Fredericks and Kallicharran early to some decent bowling from the Sri Lankans. But that only brought Rohan Kanhai to the crease to partner Gordon Greenidge, which is an intimidating proposition. Kanhai never really got out of first gear, eventually falling for a laborious 65 at the end of over 42; his partnership with Greenidge totalled 154. Who then came to the crease, maroon cap atop his shaven head? Why, Viv Richards, who belted a rapid 48 as the final eight overs yielded an average of 10.5 runs each.

Sunil Wettimuny had shown form in the first game, but the West Indies pace attack was a different proposition. And even as he showed himself to be up to the task by batting until he was the fifth man out for 81, he could find meaningful support from only one teammate (Duleep Mendis) as the rest just weren't as good at batting as their opponents were at bowling. Ultimately, there's no shame in losing to a very good cricket team, although the Sri Lankans would have liked to add more than 20 runs for their last five wickets. The West Indies will go on to face either the English or the Kiwis in the semi, before (surely) Pakistan in the final.

An innings of absolute quality from Gordon Greenidge epitomised the West Indies' excellence.

ENGLAND vs NEW ZEALAND
World Cup, Quarter Final 4 at Trent Bridge

Eight for four. That's where England sank to after the Kiwis won the toss and chose to bowl first.

But they're England, you might be forgiven for saying. Of course they'll recover. But they just didn't recover; the wickets just kept falling. At 5, 7, 7, 8, 24, 28, 40, 58, 65 and 65 again the wickets fell. Only one English batsman managed to hang around for any length of time, Lancashire's Frank Hayes who crawled his way to a boundaryless 23 before being the eighth man out. Indeed, only one person managed to find the boundary in the entire England innings: captain Mike Denness, who snicked off for just nine to be the third-highest scorer. The three main Kiwi quicks (Hadlee, Hadlee and Collinge) combined for bowling figures of 13 overs, one maiden, eight for 44. We've never seen anything like this in one-day cricket before.

So with a target of only 66 to chase, what could possibly go wrong for the Kiwis? E V E R Y T H I N G could go wrong. From John Snow taking the wicket of Glenn Turner from only the third ball of the game, to Lance Cairns becoming the eighth man out with only 57 runs on the board, everything the Kiwis touched fell apart. No batsman even managed to last for 20 balls, as wicket followed wicket, followed wicket. But 65 runs couldn't possibly be enough, and ultimately a Hedley Howarth edge to the boundary was enough to win a truly bonkers game of cricket for the away side. And, somehow, they will meet the West Indies in the semi final - and, one expects, will be absolutely blown away.

Richard Collinge tore the English batting order to pieces.

So after a truly mental Quarter Final round, we have our semi-finalists. Nobody but nobody would have picked them before the competition began...

Surely, surely, it has to be a Pakistan-West Indies final?

PAKISTAN vs IRELAND
World Cup, Semi Final 1 at Headingley

Well this is an unlikely semi-final. Fresh off their wins over Bangladesh and (incredibly) Australia, Ireland come face-to-face with their second seeded opponent: Pakistan. Nobody can imagine Ireland beating Pakistan in a World Cup match (heh), but then nor could anyone imagine them beating Australia and here we are.

Unusually for Headingley, the teams were met with a flat wicket and clear skies overhead: perfect runmaking conditions, and the Pakistanis wasted no time in winning the toss and choosing to bat first. Despite a couple of early losses (looking at you, Sadiq Mohammad), their two most dynamic batsmen really set the tone. Zaheer Abbas showed the world just how freely it is possible to score, while Javed Miandad came in at five and struck a wonderfully composed unbeaten ninety. Later in his innings he also had excellent support from both Mushtaq Mohammad and Asif Iqbal, and there was nothing the Irish bowlers could do to keep Pakistan's total south of 300. Dermott Monteith could hold his head high, but he was always trying to undo the damage inflicted against the loose bowling of Torrens.

The Irish batting was much the same story as it had been throughout the World Cup: a heroic contribution from Ivan Anderson that didn't find the proper support from the rest of their batsmen. This time, the man who will almost certainly be remembered as the hero of this World Cup finished on a fine unbeaten 119, but yet again no other Irishman managed to score more than 25. Although Anderson has been strangely impervious to high quality fast bowling, his teammates were not and Sarfraz Nawaz picked up three more to add to a fine tournament tally.

WEST INDIES vs NEW ZEALAND
World Cup, Semi Final 2 at The Oval

The West Indies are a really good bowling side. Like, really good, and this has been obvious throughout the tournament. Figuring that they would have to face those bowlers at some point, the Kiwis chose to bat first upon winning the toss.

It... wasn't pretty. It wasn't Quarter Final against England ugly - plenty of Kiwi batsmen managed to stick around for at least some time - but by god it was boring. Only one batsman managed to score more than 10 runs at more than three runs per over: Geoff Howarth, who made 24. Glenn Turner, who spent most of the innings at the non-striker's end watching his fellow batsmen get terrorised by Andy Roberts, managed to last the full 50 overs at the cost of making only 62 runs. Horrendous scoring, but what more can you do against peak Andy Roberts on top form?

Nobody particularly expected the West Indians not to chase down their target, but the manner in which they did it was still a huge statement of intent ahead of their final against Pakistan: with more than half the innings left, Viv Richards and Clive Lloyd were striding off the pitch, target reached and most of the Kiwi bowlers absolutely flattened. This was the performance of a World Cup winning team, but will they then go on to win the World Cup? Find out in a bit.

It was a scary time to be a Kiwi batsman.

PAKISTAN vs WEST INDIES
World Cup Final at Lord's
Going into the World Cup final at Lord's, the West Indies were overwhelming favourites. Their route to the final (Wales, Sri Lanka, New Zealand) was far trickier than Pakistan's (Denmark, Scotland, Ireland), and their victories were invariably convincing. But none of that means anything - the two sides will face off as equals on the Lord's turf.

After winning the toss, Pakistan chose to bowl and they couldn't have wished for a better start: before completing the first over or scoring their first run, the West Indies had lost both Roy Fredericks and Alvin Kalicharran to edges off Imran Khan away swingers. A few overs later, worse was to come: the colossus himself, Viv Richards, also lost his wicket to Pakistan's star fast bowler. At 29 for four, then 66 for five, the favourites were absolutely reeling. The one man who kept his head throughout this mess was Gordon Greenidge, who marshalled lower-order support from Bernard Julien and Deryck Murray to near a century. Just as he got within one shot of it, however, he misread a Mushtaq Mohammad googly and saw his stumps disturbed. Gutting though that must have been, some enterprising strokeplay from Murray ensured a tricky target of well over 200 for Pakistan.

Sure enough, Pakistan had a top-order collapse of their own. Courtesy of the ever-excellent Andy Roberts, they crumbled to 32 for four: it was all going to depend on Javed Miandad and Mushtaq Mohammad. But they were absolutely up to the task: together, they compiled the biggest partnership of the entire tournament: an exemplary 164 for the fourth wicket, dominated in particular by Mohammad. Keith Boyce and Andy Roberts returned and started a new wobble with three more quick wickets, but the West Indies weren't the only team who batted deep: Asif Iqbal and Wasim Bari are a very good eighth wicket partnership, and they were able to gather themselves and eke out the runs that would make Pakistan cricket's first ever World Champions.

When you've got someone of Imran Khan's quality, it can turn even the best batting line-ups to mush. But Mushtaq Mohammad was the real hero, delivering when his team needed it most.
