Been watching the Rugby World Cup and was looking at the new look Eden Park. Is it just me or does it now look as though it would be totally the wrong shape and dimentions to have a cricket field on it?

I know it was a weird shape before but it now looks to me as though it wouldn't have the right dementions for cricket.

It's still the same shape as before :p

Basically, grounds used for internationals before 1995 do not conform to any sort of regulation.

However, I think Eden Park actually conformed to the match conditions used from 1995 until 2007; being as the pitch is laid in line with the corners of the field, it exaggerates the long and square lengths. Even in the current rule set, there is no regulation stating that no part of the boundary can be only 40 odd metres from the centre of the wicket; only that the square and straight radii meet a minimum standard. Any ground built in the right period could do in theory do the same.

Haven't they recently changed the orientation of the pitch?

Ah ok just looked as though it had been altered. Or does it have retractable seating like ANZ Stadium in Sydney does?

Not including the temporary seating they have just for the Rugby WC, they have removable seating in front of both main stands now, instead of just the ASB stand like before.

This is the plan without the Rugby WC temporary seating:

There are some pictures here from the New Zealand - Pakistan match last summer, with the stadium there being more or less the same as what it'll be after the Rugby WC.

Thanks for posting. Looks interesting. wicket going across what is the footy field with the short straight boundaries and long ones square of the wicket.

Maybe I'm just a tradionalist and prefer things that way.

I remember reading an article in the herald that the dimensions of Eden Park were changed during the renovations for the RWC, can't remember what the new ones were though

Another interesting thing I came across is that they're selling a double ticket for Eden Park for the ODI against South Africa and then the next day a Rugby League football match being played there the very next day. Wonder if they'll be able to remove the single drop in wicket in less than 12 hours

Yep, I'm probably going to get that offer.

They've started working on the Outer Oval since it was removed for the Rugby World Cup, hopefully it well be ready to go for next season.

ANZ Stadium (Sydney Olympic Stadium) for cricket

From memory people were complaining it was too hard to hit a 6 straight and too easy on the sides. So they ended up doing it this way and now we got the opposite complaints :p I'm with you on this, from what I can remember all the Ovals have a long straight boundary and short side ones.

Well hitting a 6 isn't meant to be easy. Because you have to have to use a combination of timing, accuracy and strength.

Yes ovals have long straight boundaries. Adelaide being a prime example and I dare say ANZ Stadium is a bit smaller than Adeialde Oval

After last night's T20 at ANZ Stadium

Though I have a feeling the playing field is might be a bit bigger than Eden Park
