FC cricket expanding to 5 days?

The need to encourage young spinners at state level was also an issue and Warne suggested extending Sheffield Shield matches to five days to let slow bowlers learn how to dismiss teams on wearing pitches. The coaches hoped that state selectors and captains would employ specialist spinners more often, especially at a time when there were significant opportunities at Test and one-day level.

Should be able to fit that extra day into the schedule and if it means our spinners learning their trade then I'm all for it. Especially if Warne believes this is the problem.

I always wondered why can't they just make FC matches 5 days like Tests. It would be good for the spinners - but for it to happen I think it may take a while.

Yeah, well it would decrease the number of draws you'd think. But I don't see it happening as County Cricket is 4 days, every other FC cricket is 4 days - so they won't change it here after over a hundred years.

Agree with you basically it is a tradition now to be honest.5 day cricket is enjoying and is real cricket i dont think it should be changed to 4 day or 3 day.

Times are changing, pitches are flatter, we need more days to get results. I don't like playing 4 days in FC, I see no point in playing less time for a domestic match which is just as important as an International match.

Surely spinners should learn to bowl sides out on four day pitches and then they won't have any problem stepping up to a five day Test match environment?

Do FC spinners have that much problem taking wickets? Mushy never had much problem, not Murali and even English spinners take wickets if they're good enough. Maye they don't take the same numbers as the leading English seamers, but with English weather and conditions they may not always get the/much chance.

I also firmly believe spinners need the challenge, to develop their variety and lines to take wickets without assistance of the pitch. A good bowler should take wickets on most pitches, maybe if the guile and subtlety is developed early then spin can be great again. Or perhaps we lacked spinners worldwide, Warne, Kumble, Mushtaq Ahmed, Saqlain, Murali etc were all figments of our imagination. If Rashid doesn't become world class then will that be because of the pitches or the man?

Think you may have missed the point of the article. The idea of increasing FC matches in Australia to five days is to get more state teams playing spinners - the rewards being that on a fifth day pitch, the selection would bear fruition.

I always thought 4 days was about right for domestic cricket, certainly in England I don't see many matches going 5 days apart from the really boring high scoring ones where quite frankly they could go on for 10 and not yield a result. You need the 5th day for internationals because you have 2 teams consisting of the very best players, but at domestic with the talent level across the teams slightly lower I don't think its required. Certainly I don't think not having the extra day is a problem when it comes to stepping up to internationals, the problem isn't you have to play for an extra day, the problem is all the bowlers are better and they don't bowl so many bad balls. No need to drag out poorly attended, loss making 4 day games to 5 days, just produce wickets that degrade in 4 days!

I did, I just don't see why you would need a 5 day game to encourage spinners if the pitches were correctly prepared for a four day match in the first place.

I'm all for it, and it only makes sense. You don't play 40 over Domestic matches then go and play 50 over ODI's (In Australia anyway), 5 days would be great.
