All users are asked to please take a moment to review the Forum Rules.

Changes include a specific mention of not using visitor, private messaging or the mention system to promote/spam content:
however use of forum private or visitor messaging or the mention/user tagging system for promoting content is unacceptable.

A three point infraction for Advertising - unsolicited messages will apply to users who constantly mention users against their wishes.

The report system is in place to alert moderators to a post - do not use the mention system for that.

The previous 'Reputation System' rule updated to reflect the thanks system,
10. Thanks System
Users are not to message others to get them to thank posts or give reputation, in download, graphics or story threads, users can ask users to thank posts if they appreciated the content, but not to suggest that they need to reach a certain number before doing something.
The existing two point 'Reputation - asking for rep' will be renamed shortly and cover this issue.

And the rules now directly mention not using large fonts or different text colours for no reason.
Do not try to get your point across by excessive use of capitals, large fonts or different coloured text.
This is covered by the two point 'Language - txt spk or illegible' infraction.

Most of these changes just reflect existing enforcement and just make a few problem areas clearer in the rules.

What is the reputation system, how does it affect us and does it get used often?

There's the
reputation.gif
icon on posts, that lets you postively or negatively rate a post - which is then shown in your user cp. It used to be on posts and your public profile, but isn't anymore.

Most usage of it, and the main reason for keeping it is for a quick ability to comment to a user on a post without directly replying or messaging.

It's rarely used and doesn't impact anything.

Is it allowed to mention others if they don't mind?

Thankfully we have new rules covering the mentions. Was getting really bugging in the Graphics Forum despite me telling people not to mention me.

don't mention more than one or two users in a post, just wait for them to read the thread.

Is it acceptable, mentioning over 10 or more users in a post for lineup requests in leagues? Doing that using VM/PM is a real waste of time.

Mention them if they are directly relevant - don't mention more than one or two users in a post, just wait for them to read the thread.

I really like the new rules but have one suggestion. I think a league manager should be allowed to mention a number of members who are part of his league for posting their lineups especially if it has been a while since a league was up and moving. That said, I would not appreciate the mention system being used for notifying the members go check their matches.

Samuels' suggestion is a pretty good line - obviously when someone signs up for a league then they've given a degree of permission to being messaged or alerted about things.

Randomly mentioning people to try and get them to sign up is probably the main thing we'd be targeting in the Leagues section.

Before the mention system we used to VM team managers for the lineups, draft rules etc. That was well within the rules. So mentioning team managers for league notifications isn't an issue. But tagging all members to take part in your league isn't acceptable, there's the announcement thread for that.

Another thing I'd like to add, If someone is already actively subscribed to a thread, (i.e. they are actively posting in that thread), mentioning them again isn't of any use. They would anyway read whatever you're putting across.

The mention system is best used to bring something to the notice of others which they are likely to miss, but it is of relevance to them.
