When WWE Champion John Cena was drafted to RAW at the beginning of the 2005 Draft Lottery, SmackDown! was left without a champion.

General Manager Theodore Long, always a man of action, decided to stage a six-man elimination match to crown a brand new SmackDown! Champion.

Even though WWE Champion JBL thought he deserved to be given this new championship based solely on his reputation, he competed in the match and actually won an exhausting 45-minute classic, outlasting the likes of Booker T, Chris Benoit, Undertaker, Christian and Muhammad Hassan.

But moments after the victory, Long announced JBL was not the champion, but rather the No. 1 Contender. SmackDown! landed its champion when none other than World Heavyweight Champion Batista was introduced as the final pick in the 2005 Draft Lottery.
The shocking pick left JBL stunned. Still, he promises to return to prominence at The Great American Bash, the same pay-per-view where JBL won the WWE Championship last year when he defeated Eddie Guerrero and held the championship for more than nine months.

Will Batista be able to successfully defend his championship at The Great American Bash or will JBL regain what he believes is his rightful place atop the SmackDown! roster?
