Hair booted from ICC panel

From correspondents in Mumbai, India
November 04, 2006
THE International Cricket Council has sacked controversial umpire Darrell Hair from its elite panel, ending his international career, a highly-placed ICC said.

...

"The Asian bloc comprising India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh tabled a motion at the meeting that Hair be taken off the panel," he said.
"The motion was put to vote and was passed by a 7-3 majority.

Yet another reminder of who really runs World Cricket...

Really doesn't come to a surprise that the Asian countries decided to boot him out but I was surprised to see Sth Africa, WI and Zimbabwe also wanted him to go.

Is this another attack on the Asian countries and another whine by Jarryd?? Also why did you cut off the section of the article where it says "The four Asian nations plus South Africa, Zimbabwe and the West Indies voted against Hair"? Emphasises my point that you are pointing the finger on Asia while other countries outside of Asia also voted on removing Hair but you are not pointing the finger on them.

Well I can't say it's a bad thing they've done. He's been involved in one too many controversies.

this just makes me feel sick! pressure from the high support numbered countries has clearly played the major part in this! when it comes down to it, hes a world class umpire and all he is done is play by the book. I can see this thread becoming heated very quickly though :(

For having the guts to make a tough call? Do you really think Darrel Hair is the only umpire who thinks Murali chucks? He probably isn't, but he had the guts to give it a no-ball. Pathetic decision.

100% Correct, he is just an umpire without fear, all the umpires are scared of controversy but he isn't afraid to enforce the rules, and it's the stupid whingeing that has put him in trouble, the Asian Cricket Boards need to learn that if you do something wrong then you are liable for it, calling Hair racist is racism in itself, by overusing it to just say "Well we are black and he is white so he is racist." Disgraceful decision, anyone who disagrees doesn't understand it and is siding with their country.

Well I do not agree, but I understand the decision. He called a team for ball tampering with no evidence, and refuses to state his basis so he deserved to be punished.

That's just not on; An umpire gets banned because he's given a few dodgy decisions against a team? If sacking him is the way to deal with it, then I can think of a few Australians who'd like Bucknor and Aleem Dar to be sacked after their bad decisions in last year's Ashes.

This has really annoyed me, these countries should learn that the rub of the green doesn't always go their way.

The motion passed with a 7-3 majority. Even though the person who posted this thread made it seem like it was the big bad Asian bloc responsible for this, its quite obvious that they weren't the only ones who had a problem with Hair's umpiring.

I really don't see what the Asian sides are going to gain out of this, they are only going to widen the gap between them and the R.O.W...

Yes, but he was the instigator of the the Inzigate scandal (;)).

Countries are angry at him because of that, people talk about having the guts to do something, well Hair has had the guts to risk this sort of sacking and sadly he got it.

A Pakistan fan supporting this decision, NO!

The Asian Bloc tabled the request. Out of 10 nations the Bloc has 4. So that means they only need 2 of the other 6 to agree and they get their way. Hardly democratic.

Right. So what would make it democratic? Anything that would get Hair to keep his job?

He'd lost the confidence and respect of most the teams. After the ICC hearing came down in favour of Pakistan there was very little chance he was going to keep his job.

Yes, that is what I was trying to say. Without respect and with a scandal written all over his name, how can he continue to umpire in high publicity matches.
