Title says it all... what does your nation need to do to win in Sri Lanka in 2012? Who will you pick? What holes do you need to fill and what weaknesses do you need to cover?

For Australia, there are a few questions to answer:
1) Michael Clarke - Thankfully he's admitted his batting is not cutting the mustard and that means he's surely going to try and improve his game. The good news for him is that since he's ditched his high maintenance fiancee, he should have plenty of time to play IPL next year. I see a reunion with Warney on the cards. He needs to come up with a better gameplan. Anyway, he's basically got 2 years to sort out his game, I hope the selectors give him a chance to, because he's a good captain, handy bowler and good in the field. If he gets that batting sorted, he's a good player to have.
2) Balance/extra bowling depth - I love Shane Watson, but unfortunately, once his bowling got carted in the last couple of games there was no one else to turn to. And in 2 years time, I can't see Watson being a better bowler and it's possible he'll be starting to give away bowling altogether by then. To me the easy fix is move Steve Smith up to #7. Smith's batting (and bowling) will be better in 2 years and he can play as the 5th bowler with 4 specialists below him - some of whom need to be able to bat a bit of course. If the pitches in SL are turning then you play a spinner as one of those 4 specialists.
3) Squad turnover - who will still be available for selection in 2 years? Mike Hussey surely won't be. Dirk Nannes will also be over 35. Dave Hussey and Brad Haddin will be creeping towards 35 as well. Personally, I'd be dropping Haddin from T20s, I don't think anyone should play all 3 formats when they get past 30. For bowlers it's a little harder to project for, particularly the express bowlers that Australia employs. Mitch J would be 30 and Taity almost 30. Is 2012 too far away for them? Maybe, particularly for Taity.

So here's a possible XI for the 2012 World Cup:
1. Davey Warner
2. Tim Paine (wk)
3. Shane Watson
4. Cameron White (c)
5. Michael Clarke?/Dave Hussey?/other middle order: Bailey, Birt, Cosgrove, Voges/Mitch Marsh? Shaun Marsh too, perhaps with a bit of reshuffling.
6. Callum Ferguson - the new Mike Hussey :p
7. Steven Smith
8. Mitchell Johnson - John Hastings might be a shot for the bowler who can bat slot if Mitch is off the rails by then. Dan Christian if his bowling improves a bit more.
9. Nathan Hauritz/other spinner: Xavier Doherty/Jon Holland/Aaron Heal/whoever...
10. A quickie: Tait, Bollinger, Cutting, Siddle, Hilfenhaus, McKay, Rimmington
11. A 2nd quickie from the above list.

I cant see Clarke becoming a good T20 player at all. Nothing about his games suits T20 cricket. Forget about in this format.

I'd personally hope Haddin is still playing all 3 formats by 2012 even @ 35. Gilchrist was still good enough @ 35. So i'd hope Haddin is still playing well in two years time & involved in the T20 set-up.

It will be interesting to see what happens with Nannes in the next few years. He basically will be the premier T20 freelance bowler in the world in the IPL (if it still continues), the KFC big bash & maybe at a English county. He wont be playing no test - although he may play a few ODIs for Victoria. So i'd say he will be pretty fresh in 2 years time. So i wont write off the chances of him playing then just yet.

I've always been interested in Doherty as a spinner since his under-19 days. But i never seen him bowl ever. Based on what you've seen of him in AUS domestic cricket, you think he could make the step up ATS @ international level to be a T20 or 50 overs bowler?.

Mitchell Marsh looks special. Could be a good all-rounder in another two years indeed.

Oh god, i've had so much T20 over the last few months that I don't even want to think about it...

But, I think that Gautam Gambhir might find himself relegated to Test/ODI only status. We may replace him with a guy like Pandey, who is younger and is a real natural strokeplayer. Uthappa should find a spot in the side if he keeps up form. Our bowling is in tatters so hopefully we have some guys that will stand up and take charge of the situation. I'm personally backing R Ashwin and Ojha to perform.

2 years is a long time in cricket, especially T20, no way can I predict an entire XI so soon.

Considering that the next one is two years away, its too early to predict complete lineups for that tournament. But I expect that India will continue to play Yuvraj again just on reputation. Wish Dhoni is not the captain when that tournament comes (he should play as a player, though). I see guys like Pandey, Kohli and Tiwary (Manoj and Saurabh) playing for India by then. Hope we find good fast bowlers atleast by then. Zaheer and Nehra both cant play that tournament and we should have been done with Praveen too by that time.

It's like chocolate cake. It's delicious, but once you have few slice, you feel like throwing up, and cant even look at the cakes!

4. David Hussey
5. Callum Ferguson
6. Michael Hussey
7. Matthew Wade+
8. Steven Smith

11. Doug Bollinger

Played around with. I don't think Dirk Nannes will be around in 2 years, and Ryan Harris may have dropped from the scene. Can Shaun Tait last? I've still got Steven Smith at 8, I reckon we need that extra batsman (Hussey in the semi).

I've got Matty Wade as keeper, simply because I believe he's better than Paine (Victorian bias?) Not sure if both the Husseys will be around come 2012, but then again I'm not sure Planet Earth will be either (see Apocalypse for more information). Ferguson, Finch, etc probably the next best.

The tournaments once every 2 years, there's not going to be a hell of a lot of change at all. Maybe in the 2014 one there will be more.

I expect NZ to have many changes and it's bloody hard to pick from now.
Oram and Styris will probably be gone,

1. B. McCullum
2. Ryder
3. Guptill
4. Taylor
5. N. Broom ;)
6.
7. N. McCullum
8. Vettori
9. Southee
10. Wagner (oh yeah!)
11.

Who will be the other quick?
Also Broom is a stab in the dark.
And will McCullum keep, or will we see Van Wyk or someone new.
