Sweating And Swearing

1st TVS Test - Eden Gardens, Kolkata
India Close of Innings

In the words of the great man Richie Benaud Australia where left "Sweating and Swearing" in the field as no matter what they did they just couldn't get the two remaining wickets. Edges went through and over slips and french cuts went to the boundary as if it was all perfectly scripted until finally Ricky Ponting took his 4th catch off the bowling of McGrath to halt the charge of Singh for a arsey 16.

The last man in was Zaheer Khan and even he capitalised on this little burst of luck that was going India's way. Ricky Ponting could do nothing but watch as his teams chances of winning the game slowly slipped away.

Strangely enough with it all going Indias way Rahul Dravid hung his head out of the change room window and told his boys to come in. India declared with a first innings total of 9/483 Declared. Dravid proveing that he is contending for the worst bloke in history award declaring with Pathan on 49*. Terrible effort Rahul. Maybe Dravid knows that he will need all the time he can get to bowl Australia out twice.

As the scorecard shows Yuvraj Singh played the innings of his life as the Australian bowlers never got settled on a line and length. Warne going for plenty as did Lee and Bracken. It is now up to the batsman to keep Australia in this match with India firmly ontop with no rain forecast.

Australia Solid In Reply

1st TVS Test - Eden Gardens, Kolkata
Australia 0/51 - 15 overs

Lunch - Day 2

Langer 24(47)*
Hayden 26(43)*

Pathan 0/28
Khan 0/21
Kumble 0/2

Australia trail by 432 runs

As Hayden who is in a real purple patch and Langer who is slightly struggling came to the crease it was clear that a good start was crucial to any success that Australia could hope for in this match.

An hour of concentration was all that was required to finish the first session on Day 2 and that is just what the Australians did. Some intense focus combined with some expert driving puts the Australians in a good position to reply to Indias monster target.

Australia Lose There First

1st TVS Test - Eden Gardens, Kolkata
Australia 1/78 - 25 overs

2:21pm - Day 2

Langer 36(71)*
Hayden 33(76)

Pathan 0/44
Khan 0/21
Kumble 0/2
Harbhajan Singh 1/5

Australia trail by 406 runs

Matthew Hayden is the first man to go. He suffered the consequences of becoming impatient with the off spin of Harbhajan Singh. Trying to make somthing out of nothing Hayden rocked onto the backfoot and attempted to life over the top but only managed to find the hands of Sehwag. Harbhajan went mental as usual after capturing the wicket as he hates anything Australian.

Harbhajan happy with his efforts

The skipper Ricky Ponting is the new man in.

Ponting Out Harbhajan Ontop

1st TVS Test - Eden Gradens, Kolkata
Australia 2/90 - 27 overs

2:31pm - Day 2

Langer 39(76)*
Ponting 9(10)

Pathan 0/44
Khan 0/21
Kumble 0/10
Harbhajan Singh 2/9

Australia trail by 393 runs

Unfortunatly Ricky Ponting has suffered the same fate as Hayden being caught by Sehwag off the bowling of Harbhajan Singh. Getting underneath a cut shot that flew to the feilder and a well judged catch was the result. Australia now in a wobbly position that would suggest another quick wicket and the ship might sink. Harbhajan with some great figures is bowling a treat.

A big wicket danger man Ponting out early

India go into there trademark huddle as the new man Hodge comes to the crease with expectations of the whole of Australia resting on his shoulders. Can he deliver?

Hodge in. But for how long?

Langer battles Indian Attack

1st TVS Test - Eden Gardens, Kolkata
Australia 2/150 - 43 overs

Tea - Day 2

Langer 64(129)*
Hodge 27(43)*

Pathan 0/68
Khan 0/30
Kumble 0/27
Harbhajan Singh 2/12

Australia trail by 333 runs

Justin Langer who is battling poor recent form and a tough Indian attack reaches a well deserved 50. Some good support from Brad Hodge has Australia in a good position going into the fianl session on day 2.

Irfan Pathan has shouldered alot of the overs but the spinners Kumble and Harbhajan are doing there job well from the other end keeping the doubt in the batsman's mind.

Australia need a good partnership with out of form Symonds is due in next followed by the charismatic Mike Hussey.

Hodge Done For Spin

1st TVS Test - Eden Gardnes, Kolkata
Australia 3/156 - 46 overs

4:04pm - Day 2

Langer 67(137)*
Hodge 30(51)

Pathan 0/70
Khan 0/32
Kumble 1/29
Harbhajan Singh 2/12

Australia trail by 327 runs

the Brad Hodge show came to an end shortly after Tea after a very good looking start to his innings. Hodge was done for flight and spin as he managed to edge through to the keeper Dhoni off the bowling of Kumble.

Hodge walks off wondering what could have been

Spin looks to be the way to go on this track as it looks to be crumbling up pretty quickly.

Andrew Symonds is the new man in and he is under alot of pressure to cement his spot in the Australian test team with the bat and silence his critics.

Silence your critics Simmo

Symonds Fails Yet Again

1st TVS Test - Eden Gardens, Kolkata
Australia 4/185 - 51 overs

4:27pm - Day 2

Langer 80(153)*
Symonds 15(16)

Pathan 1/87
Khan 1/32
Kumble 0/29
Harbhajan Singh 2/12
Tendulkar 0/11

Australia trail by 298 runs

Andrew Symonds walked back to the pavilion looking like a beaten man. Yet another low score leaves everyone wondering how many more chances he can have. He will need to pull a rabbit out of a hat in the second dig if he is to put the doubt in the selectors mind. Symonds was salmon trout (definatly out) when he played across the line and Steve Bucknor gave LBW.

Mike Hussey who has been successful at test level so far comes to the crease needing to form a partnership with the determined Langer.

Mike On His Bike

1st TVS Test - Eden Gardens, Kolkata
Australia 5/195 - 55 overs

4:45pm - Day 2

Langer 84(162)*
Hussey 6(13)

Pathan 2/95
Khan 0/31
Kumble 1/29
Harbhajan Singh 2/12
Tendulkar 0/13

Australia trail by 288 runs

It was all suprises when Mr Cricket and Mr cool under pressure Mike Hussey was out early having been caught in the gully off a length ball from Pathan. Australia in real trouble now that they are under the gun at 5 down. They will need some great efforts from the lower order to get back in the door of the 1st Test.

Anything can happen here as Gilchrist walks to the crease. India needs him early or he could blast Australia right back into the contest. Indda ontop here but will it last?

Langer's Timely Ton

Justin Langer celebrates 100 by blowing a kiss to the people closest to him here at Kolkata. What an important innings in the context of this match as Australai would have gone knowhere without him.

It is key that Langer goes on with this innings in pursuit of a double hundred and a 1st innings close enough to rival India.
