Dearie me, Mathews bowls his first ball in nearly two years and gets Pooran who has made a century and was tilting the game towards the Windies out.

And even Sanga’s laughing. A happy Sanga is someone everyone would want. :D

The clash between Sri Lanka and West Indies can be compared with the one between India and England as both these contests featured two evenly matched sides. Now here's the thing. India required 338 to chase, while Windies required to chase just one additional run . So, Windies were 4/84 in 18th over. That would have put them in extreme pressure or at least would have gave them a likewise feeling. Generally, in such scenario we could expect Windies to have lost their way by 40th over losing the match by over 100 to 150 runs. But that doesn't happen. Today Windies reached 200 in 35th over for loss of 6 wickets while India did it in 36th over for loss of just 3. There was some character and intent in West Indies team. They managed to come much closer to the win than India did. Now compare the quality of batting from India & West Indies' top order and then compare the quality of batting from respective team's middle order batsmen. West Indies' no. 5-8 surely handled the pressure much better than India's middle & lower order. On opposite hand Sharma & Kohli gave rather an effective platform for India's middle order to allow them to come and take the game home. In cricket, you don't go on to win everything, I don't deny that. Losing is part of the game. I don't count only one individual from the Indian dressing room solely responsible for the lost yesterday. But it has been funny to look around and see some Dhoni fans backing his temperament and body language yesterday, the fans who also shamefully blame Rohit & Kohli for not giving an explosive start in first ten overs. Like what they're experts or something. Please, nobody teaches Kohli how to chase. Guy averages nearly around 100 (if I'm not wrong) in India's successful chases. Rather both these players played really well in my opinion. They scored almost run a ball in a chase that initially required 6.80 runs per over. Yet they face criticism, because some people are trying to overlook their favorite player's actions in the process. I feel, that's even more disgraceful. Fans while speaking in terms of team shouldn't base the criteria of right and wrong on who's their favorite player.

Thing is do India have the players that could do any better?

It's going to be interesting to see who line ups for India in 2023. Most of the top order in this World Cup will be as old or older than Dhoni is now.

Very much happy for Mayank Agarwal was piling on runs for years in domestic cricket infact was the leading run scorer for couple of years on trot
for Karnataka.

Said back in 2016-2017 on this forum that we need a explosive opener (Pant or Agarwal) at the top who can give us a brisk start back when Dhawan was really struggling and Rohit Sharma has always been a slow starter in ODI cricket.

Well the talent pool is India is humongous as you might atleast be aware of the players name after creating almost all of them in the Big Ant's cricket Academy for DBC, Ashes and now Cricket 19 :p.

The India A team is being managed by Dravid and has several A tours and a lot the players who does well in those tour gets picked on the national side in the recent times. The likes Pant, Shankar, Shaw, Khaleel, Agarwal, Vihari, Gill, Shaw , Siraj etc. are some of the players who got picked because of their performances in these A tours.

The addition of Pant in test team was not on the fact that he is a very good dasher in the IPL but because of the fact he was doing well in the longer format in the Ranji Trophy as well the A tours same can be said about Agarwal , Vihari who made their test debut against Australia where they played a crucial role in helping India win the series against Australia.

I am expecting atleast 5-6 of the current roster (a year and a half) being replaced and the future lineup might loosely look like this.

Agarwal/Pritvi Shaw
Rohit
Kohli
Gill/Iyer/Rahul/Nitish Rana
Pant (WK))/Ishan Kishan
H Pandya
K Pandya/Washington Sundar
Kuldeep
Chahal/Shreays Gopal/Markande
Khaleel/Deepak Chahar
Bhuvi
Shami/Siraj/Saini.

(Also hoping the young gun bowlers who were star in the U19s to recover from injury and gets a chance the likes of Nagarkoti,Ishan Porel etc.)

The list can even go on and on and on..... We definitely do have the players in our ranks who can step up and definitely do better if given chances and are backed up and utilized by the management.

With the tournament being in India I could imagine a few of the older players wanting that swansong, it'll be interesting to see how quickly/if there is a big turnaround.

Like you say there's a lot of talent and a lot of exciting players but they need a chance rather than being dropped in at at the deep end a bit like Pant has been. Next four years seems to like good chance for Kohli to really shape a team in his image, a bit like Morgan has done with England.

Boy, if Dhoni were to play another 2011, April 2nd knock, that MSD 2.0 movie is coming!

I was thinking today evening- Would it have been logical, to have Rahane replace Shankar? In my opinion, yes. He's experienced and that counts for a lot. Unlike T20, Jinks is not a bad option at the top of the order.

As a replacement opener he would fit the bill. He has the ability to go at a run a ball as an opener too and that would get the job done. To go with a newbie in a WC knockout stage is a huge risk.

The last time Rahane played a odi series for India, he was the MOS. He also recently scored a ton in county cricket and has been playing. The experience of having played the 2015 World Cup can't be disregarded. He's as good as anyone in the field and a very stable bloke to have in the side. I'm a bit mystified by this selection to be honest with you. I would have picked Jinks and even thought it to be a no brainer.

The problem is, Mayank is considered to be a fast and aggressive scorer whereas Rahane has that old world style of accumulating runs and getting the S/R up with conventional ways. With too many accumulators already in the squad (Rohit, Dhoni, Jadhav), I guess they decided to opt for a rookie Mayank who can be as fast as a Rahul or a Kohli.

To me, throwing Mayank at this stage is definitely a huge risk but we had no options.

I wouldn’t even call KL a fast scorer, he is massively behind Mayank in terms of List A strike rate and has very rarely been aggressive from the start in ODIs too.

Had it been Rohit who needed replacing, I would have considered selecting Rahane. But the player that we’re missing right now is Dhawan and the one guy closest to resembling his style of play as an opener is Mayank. Players like him and Pant not receiving proper backing in ODIs is the fault of the management as Mayank is someone who should have debuted a year or two ago. I still believe he can be an important player in this team, if he makes those quick 30s and 40s allowing Rohit time to settle.

@LiveLoveABD I also remember Rahane playing the South Africa ODI series as his last one where he most certainly did not win the MoS. He was good in just one game where the target was less and he made a handy fifty to take us home. We’ve already got Dhoni who does the same. At best, Rahane’s going to go at run a ball on a flatter pitch and whilst he might be scoring runs in county right now, his test spot (his strongest format, remember) has been under scrutiny for a while due to poor form. It isn’t really a no-brainer to pick him.

I have been the biggest advocate of Rahane in ODIs over the years because the man is brilliant when in form. But unfortunately a team with Rohit, Dhoni, Jadhav and now even Rahul cannot afford a place for Rahane. We need a dashing opener to complement Rohit and not another slow starter.
