Kind of ironic that comical run outs are proving Pakistan's downfall even when they aren't playing.
Most no of wins comes first, followed by NRR, and then head to head (I guess). Cant have head to head before NRR, because one good day against the team gets you in and its a lottery
Completely disagree. Head to head should be first.

I did expect him to do this, but this is a really sad story. I guess there has been no communication to him about the WC snub since if it had been, he would not have retired like this at the age of 33. And seeing the way that he is also stepping away from IPL, the bridge between him and the BCCI has broken down for good.

Could have been a great player if he had played test matches. The kind of game he possesses, he would have been really good there. There was a time when he was heralded as the 'next big thing in Indian cricket'.

So lets say Team A performs consistently across the tournament and beats teams comprehensively. Then they have one off day and lose to Team B.

So you are saying Team B should qualify because they won on head to head. This is a round robin WC tournament where performances across the league stages is counted and should be taken into account. NRR is a better way of deciding qualifier than Head to Head.

I just think it comes down to who is the better team. If they end up on the same points after everyone has played each other, the one who won out the two tied teams should be considered the more deserving. It's a knockout tournament at the end of the day, if you have an off day that's tough.

Agree with Sai here. No. of wins and NRR are indicative of a team's performance over an extended duration of time while head-to-head can be deceptive. All it takes is one bad day.

This is primarily the reason why I'm liking this format this WC. It gives you a chance to compete against all teams rather than a subset. It's another thing that rain has offset that but I'm all for this approach.

If they have equal points it means they played equally well across the tournament. If Team A performs consistently but ends up with same points as Team B, then Team B performed equally well.

NZ barely beat BAN, WI and have had none of their weak games washed out. They got extremely lucky in my opinion to snag a point out of a game that would at least be competitive i.e India instead of say a game against SL or AFG. PAK on the other hand lost a crucial point to SL as did BAN. The rain as expected has definitely played a part in determining a semi finalist and as a result the World Cup as a whole.

The top 3 look in another league compared to them.

Given the points are equal, I`d actually go for head to head. The reason being NZ and PAK got their games rained off against teams of a different caliber. At least the head to head settles things on the basis of a straight contest between two sides. Pakistan and Bangladesh have played much better than NZ here. NZ are extremely lucky to have that India game washed out. All their wins against SA, WI, BAN were based on streaks of luck.

Been treated worse than Kumble if that was even possible. Few others as well who've been treated poorly but this was the worst case of the lot. Hope he finds peace and I really really don't rate or like the guy. This is how Shastri should be treated in my opinion. But, this is the ugly world we live in.

P.S: I don't appreciate the timing of his announcement.

Yep, and as it stands,New Zealand could qualify without beating anyone in the top 5 whereas Pakistan will go out despite having beaten two of them. NRR is far too much about luck if you ask me. You could have two teams tied on points but one thrashes the weakest side but the other has the game against the weakest side washed out.

I'd say the same if it transpired that England ended on the same points as Pakistan or Sri Lanka. We didn't beat them when we had the chance so that means we aren't, in a head to head in this tournament, better than them.

The reason India find themselves uncertain despite breezing into the semis is the lack of vision from the Shastri-Kohli duo along with ineptitude of the selectors. Dhoni took a call and Srikkanth backed him in 2008 when we moved from Dada/Dravid in 2007/8. Keep in mind Dravid was captain till the 2007 ODI Series in England and if I remember correctly, he also scored a couple of blistering knocks against England, the 60-ball 93 at Bristol being one of them. Honestly, the 2008 Dravid was much less of an ODI liability than the 2018/19 Dhoni. Yet, the selectors did`nt have the spine to say that, Pant will be our first choice keeper and we will groom him for the WC. Imagine if Pant had the game time. To make matters worse, we did not pick him in Aus and NZ at the start of the year.
