Teams will be allowed an additional fielder outside the 30-yard circle during the second or third Powerplay, the International Cricket Council's Cricket Committee has recommended after their two-day meeting in Dubai.

The committee, chaired by former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar, came up with a number of recommendations on issues related to ODI regulations, ball tampering, glue on pitches, volume of cricket, international umpiring and the role of the television umpire.

(Sorry if this belongs in the news forum, although I thought that had been removed sort of)

So new powerplay rules, Zimbabwe basically ruled out of test cricket, ball tampering rules layed down and glue banned from pitches (Steve Harmison's test career over and done :p).

Crikey, why not just call an entire one day innings a powerplay and be done with it instead of these stupid suggestions that just make it even more complicated than it needs to be.

I re-he-he-he-eally hate the free hit rule (They used it in Pro40 too).

What usually happens is the field spreads out, then one of about 3 things happens. The batsman is caught, the batsman mis-hits or the batsman totally misses the ball. Result - one scrambled extra run. All that messing about for one run. Why not just add an extra run to the extras total and let the game continue in full flow?

Someone stood behind the stumps for a free hit once. The ball deflected off the wickets for four. Now that's clever!

The free hit rule is good, but needs a tweak so that the fielding side can not change the field from the previous ball.

Been watching too much Scrubs?

I agree with Andrew that they should not be able to change the field but I also think that it should remain just in Twenty20 to make twenty20 special and distinguish it from a rain affected ODI a bit more.

I wouldn't mind that as it wouldn't interupt the flow of the game and also it gives a fair advantage to the batsman. However I'm not sure how easy it would be to enforce, depending of course on how accuratly you want to replicate the field as fielders would have moved to field the ball and back-up etc.

wow the possibility of the batting side picking a powerplay is a bit stupid. Cue the batting side picking it in the 40th over almost everygame as this gives basically 10 overs of pure slogging.

I'd like a change where only a minimum of 4 bowlers are needed in an ODI, instead of 5. That'll even it out a bit more, and you can see more of your best bowlers. How come batsmen don't have to retire when they've faced 60 balls.

Well they'd only pick 5 overs worth of it.

Another suggestion was to have a mandatory ball change at the 35 over mark. I am not sure whether it was to be a new ball or a ball of similar condition. ToI had it down as an advantage to batsmen, although I guess depending on conditions it could help bowlers out as well.

sohum i meant that teams normally slog for the final 5 overs. so if they could pick a powerplay they'd take overs 40-45 then carry on slogging for the final 5 as of usual. have i explained it well enough?
