Group B, Match 4

Live from St George's Park, Gqeberha

Pitch Report: A different Gqeberha pitch is used, which has a few cracks and it will be an even contest for bat and ball. It is also a bit slow.

Toss: Scotland skipper Coetzer calls tails, it lands heads. Wilson has won the toss for Ireland.

Gary Wilson: We'd like to bowl first as well. The conditions here seem better for chasing. And we feel we can restrict them and chase the runs down. We're going with 3 pacers and 2 spinners, with KOB as the sixth option if required.

:ire: Ireland - Paul Stirling, William Porterfield, Andrew Balbirnie, Kevin O'Brien, James Shannon, Gary Wilson :c: :wk:, Simi Singh, Stuart Thompson, George Dockrell, Boyd Rankin, Peter Chase

Kyle Coetzer: We'd have liked to win the toss, but honestly the pitch feels not so inclined to either. We're not disappointed, our batters are ready to get us a good score and we can defend it. We too are going with 3 pacers and 2 spin, Berrington being our sixth option. We are sticking to experience and picking our senior players, while Dylan Budge has performed well in warm-ups and will play today.

:sco: Scotland - George Munsey, Kyle Coetzer :c:, Richie Berrington, Calum MacLeod, Dylan Budge, Matthew Cross :wk:, Michael Leask, Josh Davey, Mark Watt, Alasdair Evans, Safyaan Sharif

Scotland got off to a quick start, as Munsey & Coetzer plundered 32 runs in 3 overs before the skipper fell to Rankin. Munsey & Berrington stitched a solid partnership that lasted till the 12th over till Munsey departed right before his fifty to Peter Chase, who would go on to take a five-wicket-haul in a brilliant spell of 5/32 (4) that inflicted a late-overs collapse to the Scotland Batting. Cruising at 99/2 in 12 overs, they lost 8 wickets for 37 runs in the last 7.2 overs as Chase and co downed the entire order for single-digits apart from Cross, Scotland bowled out for 136 after a very promising start.

Brace yourselves folks as we have the first SUPER OVER of the competition! Kevin O'Brien remains not out as the Irish come so close in the last over in a tense chase only to end on scores levelled. Scottish quick Alasdair Evans removed the entire top 3 for cheap in the powerplay as Ireland got off to a very shaky start. But the experienced duo of O'Brien & captain Wilson stitch a partnership of 42 quick runs to steady the chase, before the captain departed for 36 off 26. Wickets continued to tumble on the other end featuring a Dylan Budge double strike in over 19 with KOB stuck holding at the other end. With a big last-over target to get, Rankin & KOB go hard only to come ever so close yet so far, with scores tied on 136 a piece, for the loss of eight after 20. We will be moving onto a super over, Ireland batting first.

Super Over

1st Innings

Kevin O'Brien & Gary Wilson come out to bat for Ireland, while Alasdair Evans will bowl the super over for the Scots.

:bwl: Ball 1 - :sco: Evans to :ire: O'Brien - DOT. O'Brien misses the ball completely as Evans gets the better of him.
:bwl: Ball 2 - :sco:Evans to :ire: O'Brien - THREE. O'Brien sweeps it to no man's land and they run a quick three.
:bwl: Ball 3 - :sco:Evans to :ire: Wilson - DOT. Wilson hits it straight to Evans who fields it low. No run again.
:bwl: Ball 4 - :sco:Evans to :ire: Wilson - TWO. Wilson flicks it and they come back for two. Five runs on board so far.
:bwl: Ball 5 - :sco:Evans to :ire: Wilson - OUT! Clean Bowled from Evans who sees through Wilson's defence and knocks over the woodwork.

:ire: Gary Wilson - 2 (3) - b Alasdair Evans

Paul Stirling comes in to face the final delivery

:bwl: Ball 6 - :sco:Evans to :ire: Stirling - ONE. Just a single as Stirling fails to connect. So that will be it for Ireland, just six runs. Brilliant bowling from Evans and Scotland.

:ire: Ireland - 6/1
Kevin O'Brien - 3* (2)
Gary Wilson - 2 (3)
Paul Stirling - 1* (1)
Alasdair Evans - 1/6 (1 over)

1751963624494.png

Alasdair Evans bowls a brilliant super over conceding only six runs, and taking the wicket of Gary Wilson to restrict Ireland's super over exploits. Now it is all upto the Scotland batters to chase this down in their six balls.

2nd Innings

George Munsey & Kyle Coetzer walk out for Scotland. Surprisingly, it is Rankin who bowls in the super over, due to his superior experience.

:bwl: Ball 1 - :ire:Rankin to :sco: Munsey - OUT! Clean bowled! Rankin strikes first ball and sends Munsey packing, and Scotland are off to a terrible start here.

:sco: George Munsey - 0 (1) - b Boyd Rankin

Michael Leask walks in, ahead of the top-order batters, known for his power-hitting.

:bwl: Ball 2 - :ire:Rankin to :sco: Leask - DOT. Leask misses it and Scotland are yet to kick off. 7 needed off 4.
:bwl: Ball 3 - :ire:Rankin to :sco: Leask - OUT! Cleaned him up again! Rankin knocks over the stumps for the second time and it's all over for Ireland.

:sco: Michael Leask - 0 (2) - b Boyd Rankin

:sco: Scotland - 0/2
Kyle Coetzer - 0* (0)
George Munsey - 0 (1)
Michael Leask - 0 (2)
Boyd Rankin - 2/0 (0.3 overs)

1751964666101.png

Boyd Rankin double strike! WICKET, DOT, WICKET, as Rankin takes Ireland to an incredible win after a disappointing batting innings in the super over. Both Munsey & Leask found him unplayable and captain Coetzer remained speechless on the other end, as Ireland take the victory in a barely close super over that was all party for the bowlers.

:ire: Ireland won the super over by 6 runs

MOTM: Peter Chase

Ngidi, Kaul strike big with ball in heated first day of Super 12 Warm-Ups

1752054615731.png

Lungi Ngidi took six to down Pakistan for 77 in a one-sided warm-up victory for the Proteas

Day 1 of the Super 12 warm-ups got underway along with the first round games on the 14th of August in Bloemfontein & Benoni as the eight auto-qualified sides took on each other in unofficial twenty20 games.

England took on Australia in the morning game at Benoni as part of the age-old rivalry that won't feature in the main tournament. Jonny Bairstow & Dawid Malan's knocks helped them fight off Australia's bowling charge to post 148/8, boosted by a double-maximum barrage by Liam Plunkett in the last over. Coulter-Nile & Stanlake were the pick of the Australian bowlers. Australia responded strongly, with Chris Lynn setting the platform with a 38 (23) but it was Glenn Maxwell who finished things off with an unbeaten 54 off 37 balls, to guide Australia to a win over their long-time rivals.

Meanwhile in Bloemfontein India played New Zealand, with the former electing to bat first. Rohit Sharma starred with a brilliant 35-ball 76 that featured 12 boundaries, anchored by Shikhar Dhawan on the other end. Finishers Karthik & MS Dhoni's cameos at the end with four boundaries each pushed India to a competitive 194. In response, Colin Munro helped NZ get off to a blistering start but wickets tumbled on the other end, as everybody else bar Anderson fell for single digits. Munro's 25-ball fifty went in vain as Siddarth Kaul claimed a five-wicket haul as NZ were shot down for 103 in 17 overs to gift India an 81 run win.

The South Africa vs Pakistan encounter in Benoni in the afternoon saw Pakistan collapse on a struggling wicket, as Lungi Ngidi lead the fight with six wickets as nobody apart from Asif Ali crossed 20, and the side crumbled to just 77 in the end. In response Quinton de Kock lead the way for a composed eight-wicket chase with over six overs to spare, as South Africa comfortably cruised to a victory.

The final warm-up saw defending champions West Indies meet Afghanistan in Bloemfontein in the afternoon game. Afghanistan batted first and struggled to 136 off a fifty from Usman Ghani up top in 41 balls, with all Windies bowlers barring Keemo Paul taking a wicket each. In response Gayle & Fletcher blasted their way to a win in just 12 overs, Gayle unbeaten on 71.

The second round of Super 12 warm-ups commence on 16th August, to close the warm-up stage and gear up for the Super 12 round of the competition.

Pitch Report: It is the usual Paarl Wicket but it could be relatively flatter and high-scoring today. Batters could thrive.

Toss: Mathews calls tails and it lands heads. Netherlands skipper Seelaar has won the toss

Pieter Seelaar: We are going to chase here. The wicket looks good for batting but it could improve later on too. The Zimbabwe game was a disappointment, but great to see our newer players raise to occasion. We have two changes. Tobias Visee & Roelof sit out today. Ben Cooper comes in back, Myburgh goes back to opening. Michael Rippon comes in for Roela.

Angelo Mathews: We are happy to bat first. Can post a competitive total and bowl out to defend it. Was a successful win last game and we hope to carry on the momentum. So we are sticking with the same lineup.

It's Kusal Janith Perera yet again starring with the bat for Sri Lanka as he adds another fifty to his name off just 32 balls. Sri Lanka lost Gunathilaka early to van der Gugten but Perera and Kusal Mendis stitched a solid 72-run partnership before Perera himself had to go after a fifty with Sri Lanka comfortable at 92/2 in the middle of the 11th over. But a few quick wickets after put the Netherlands back in control, before Dhananjaya de Silva & Isuru Udana provided a finishing flourish that pushed Sri Lanka to get 170 with 28 runs scored in the last two overs. The Dutch bowlers were either expensive or extremely economical, but now their batters have a big chase ahead of them in a do-or-die game.

Michael Rippon finishes the game off in the final ball in our second upset of the tournament already! The Dutch got off to a quick start before losing Myburgh to Malinga at 26 in 3 overs. O'Dowd & Barresi batted on to add 77 runs together as O'Dowd missed his fifty by just four runs being dismissed on 46 (29), the Dutch being well set in the chase at 103/2 in 11.2 overs with 68 runs to get in more than 8 overs. Barresi and Cooper held fort for a while before repeated wickets of him and Doeschate saw the Lankans pull the game back by the death overs. Cooper and Edwards departed in the 19th over with fifteen to get in the last over. Rippon & Seelaar lock in and with seven runs needed off two balls, a six and a double from Rippon gets the Netherlands home in a last-ball thriller. Sri Lanka had it till the end, but they go down in another upset in this WT20! The Dutch stay alive as Sri Lanka still await another win to confirm qualification.

Pitch Report: The wicket is again batting friendly and has a bit of cracks to help the spinners.

Toss: Hamilton Masakadza calls heads and it is heads. Zimbabwe have won the toss.

Hamilton Masakadza: Seems like a good wicket to bat. We had a good win last game with the same set-up, so we are good taking the bat first. Chatara is out with a minor injury, Mpofu replaces him.

1752165842857.png

Zimbabwe were constantly ahead of the game in the first 15 overs, as Solomon Mire & Hamilton Masakadza got them off to a blasting start in the powerplay. The two added 83 runs combined at 10 RPO before two new batters were at the crease by the ninth over. It was then Sean Williams who took charge and with Brendan Taylor anchoring on the other end. Williams departed on 45 as the death overs began, with 153 on the board. This is when Zimbabwe's innings began to plummet as Nadeem Ahmed and co shot down the rest of the order for single-digits resulting in only 25 runs at the death. Zimbabwe still post a competitive 178/7 leading up to a tough chase for Hong Kong.

2nd Innings

oak_2.png

1752166362357.png

Hong Kong got off to a dismal start as they lost both two of the Top 3 early to Muzarabani. Losing a third wicket before the powerplay, Anshuman Rath tried to stabilise but departed before his fifty as Hong Kong struggled needing 76 runs off 7 overs to win. This is when Scott McKechnie lead the charge with Ehsan Khan on the other end, as the pair stitched on a stand of 51 runs in 25 balls before McKechnie departed for a swashbuckling 42 off 24 with 7 boundaries. However wickets began to tumble after, as Ehsan remained not out and Hong Kong got bowled out on the other end to just 166 in the end, falling short by just twelve runs in a nearly perfected comeback at the death.

Pitch Report: This is a slower wicket today but is expected to be better as the match goes on. Teams almost surely expected to chase if they win the toss.

Toss: Gary Wilson has called heads and it is heads. Ireland have won the toss.

Gary Wilson: We are gonna have a bowl. Looks a pretty good wicket for chasing, runs might come easier as time progresses. It was a tense but a good win last game to start our campaign off well. The boys did well. Not going to change a winning combination.

:ire: Ireland - Paul Stirling, William Porterfield, Andrew Balbirnie, Kevin O'Brien, James Shannon, Gary Wilson :c: :wk:, Simi Singh, Stuart Thompson, George Dockrell, Boyd Rankin, Peter Chase

Shakib Al Hasan: Another toss to lose will bite a bit but we can recover and hopefully we can put that loss from the last game behind us. It's a do-or-die sort of scenario now. Two changes for us too. Sabbir & Abu Jayed come in. Mosaddek and Saifuddin sit out. Saif has a bit of an issue with fitness, hence he won't be playing.

Bangladesh struggled to bat on this sluggish wicket, and it was Tamim Iqbal's 54-ball 66 that paved the way for the entire innings. They started slow but didn't lose any wickets, having managed to steady an opening partnership till the 14th over adding 104 runs for the first wicket. After Liton departed, Tamim left just an over later, as the run rate still lagged behind 7 an over. Soumya Sarkar & the captain Shakib scored a few boundaries at the death to accelerate the scoring rate, and pushed Bangladesh to a respectable 159/2 at the end; setting Ireland a chase of 160 to go 2 in 2.

2nd Innings

jok_2.png

1752241787438.png

Ireland started off well- had a good powerplay, only losing Stirling in the final ball of it having scored a respectable 46. Porterfield and Balbirnie added solidity to the chase with 40 odd runs each to ensure they were well en-route to a win. However with O'Brien departing cheaply in Over 17 Ireland saw themselves needing 33 off 21 balls, a slightly tricky equation at the death under pressure. But it was the returning James Shannon who blew any hope of a Bangladesh victory with a boundary-rich 30 runs off 14 balls, accompanied by his captain Wilson who's cameo of 12 in 5 balls definitely added some firepower as well. Ireland got there in the last ball of the 19th over, as Bangladesh's experienced pacers going for runs costed them majorly in the end. The favourites for the group are hanging by a thread now, depending desperately on results to go their way!

Toss: Mustafa calls for heads, it is tails. Scotland skipper Coetzer wins the toss.

Kyle Coetzer: We're going to bat first. We want to try a few things, the wicket looks good at the moment and we want to give our bowlers another go at the defence. Was a rough loss last game, it was too close, we really should've won that one. So sticking with the same team, no changes. It is the day of George Munsey who turns up for Scotland with a score of 57 (40) balls, taking almost all of the limelight in an opening stand of 77 runs in 62 balls. The pair of Munsey & Coetzer stayed till the eleventh over, the one which saw both of them go back to the sheds courtesy Imran Haider. Richie Berrington & Michael Leask played helpful quickfire cameos to add substance to the innings after that, with no major contributions from the rest of the middle-order. Scotland end on a respectable 154/5, but it will be an interesting second innings for both teams coming up.

Scotland have defended it! They start off beautifully as two of the Top 3 UAE batters are dismissed within 2 overs courtesy Josh Davey. Chirag Suri & Muhammad Usman however threaten with a partnership of 85 runs, with the latter eventually getting out on a 55-ball 56. The knocks were simply stalling the run rate however, as much as they brought back stability. Wickets continued to fall as Safyaan Sharif hit the final nail in the coffin with all the remaining middle-order wickets. UAE made it seem a lot closer than it was finishing at 142/7, with 20 runs coming off the last 7 balls, thanks to Naveed and Zahoor. This does help their NRR but however Scotland will remain alive with a win as they edge UAE out by 12 runs.

Australia, England bowlers mayhem in second Super 12 warm-up day

1752303617633.png

Starc blew away the Indian batting in his first white-ball game after months of rehabilitation

Day 2 of the T20 WC Super 12 warm-ups took place in Bloemfontein & Benoni on the 16th of August as the tournament wraps up its final leg of warm-up games before entirely focusing on the main tournament.

The morning game in Bloemfontein took place between England & South Africa at 11:30. The Proteas saw the taste of their own earlier medicine as they collapsed to a potent English bowling attack crumbling to 96- Mark Wood & Chris Jordan being the pick of the bowlers. A superb fifty on return from Jos Buttler eased England into their first warm-up win.

The game that happened in Benoni at the same time between Windies & NZ saw the Windies bat first. Another good opening show saw them get to 155 on a tougher pitch, as Evin Lewis top scored with a fifty. Despite Seifert's resilient knock at the top, New Zealand failed to succeed in the chase, as their concerning middle-order collapsed yet again and they finished on 119/7 to hand the defending champions successive victories.

The Bloemfontein pitch continued to produce belters to deal with for the batters as seen in the evening game between Australia & India. Australia batted first and struggled to 147 off Marsh & McDermott against an Indian potent bowling. In response Mitch Starc & AJ Tye wreaked havoc on a comfortable wicket as the Indian experienced batting crumbled to them up front, India bowled out for just 80 at the end on a questionable pitch.

The second game in Benoni which was the final warm-up saw Pakistan take on neighbours Afghanistan. Batting first Afghanistan fell prey to the superior Pakistan bowling attack despite Gulbadin's fighting fifty, with Amir & Faheem starring for the men in green. In response, Pakistan's chase was easily completed with ten wickets in hand.

The Super 12 stage commences on the 19th of August, and the last round of Preliminary games will take place before that.

Toss: Mathews calls heads and it lands tails. Hamilton Masakadza wins the toss.

Hamilton Masakadza: Seems like a decent wicket to bat yet again. We'll bat first. We've won two in two are in the cusp of qualification. The team has been doing well so we will stick with the same side. Chatara is still unavailable.

It was a decent start for Zimbabwe as their opening pair put on a stand for 9 overs for 75 runs before the skipper departed after a steady innings of 40. Mire was quicker but departed before his fifty, and after that, it was all downhill for Zimbabwe. They only ended up scoring 32 runs for the loss of 4 wickets in the last 6 overs, with Thisara Perera the man who orchestrated this collapse with the wicket of Mire. He finished with figures of 3/27, while Pradeep took 2, and they stalled Zimbabwe for just 135/6 at the end. Sri Lanka need 136 runs to qualify for the Super 12 stage.

Sri Lanka got off to the worst start possible with their opener Gunathilaka out for a golden duck in the first ball of the innings. But then the duo of Kusals took charge- Perera & Mendis added 88 runs for the second wicket in just 8.3 overs before Perera, the star of the batting so far, departed for a destructive 22-ball 43 that got Sri Lanka off to the perfect start. But in the end it was Kusal Mendis who continued the onslaught forward, getting to his fifty and scoring 60 (42) with 4 fours and 2 sixes before departing by the 14th over, having nearly won the chase for his team. In the end, a composed knock from Chandimal and a six run cameo from de Silva take Sri Lanka to the Super 12, with 20 balls to spare. Zimbabwe however, await the result of the next match to confirm their qualification to the next round.

Pieter Seelaar: We are happy, wanted to chase anyway, so that's good. Was an amazing win last game, the boys stepped up under pressure to keep us alive and going. It's do-or-die now, and we need a comprehensive victory, and we are hopefully prepared to go all out for that. One change, Fred Klaassen comes in for Shane Snater. Hopefully, we make it to the next round, the boys are here to give their best.

The Netherlands have done the job quite remarkably with the ball in hand as they restrict Hong Kong to just 127/9 in the end. It was Timm van der Gugten who deserved a special mention for his third consecutive spell of a sub-6 economy for the Dutch in this tournament, with 2 wickets for just 18 runs off his 4 this time. The other bowlers stepped up too, with the captain returning identical figures that also included a maiden. Hong Kong didn't really kick on at any point, with Scott McKechnie down at Number 7 being the man to step up again remaining not out on 37*. Nizakat and Ehsan Khan both played quick cameos but they weren't enough, and Netherlands now have 128 to chase. They have to do it in around 14.1 overs or quicker to qualify. Game on for the batters!

Wesley Barresi plays a fighting knock to push Netherlands forward into getting that qualification, but it was all in vain. The openers didn't kick off and O'Dowd's sluggish knock did not help their situation, but once Barresi stepped in, he stepped right on the accelerator. Boundaries began to flood and he took the scoring rate to 9, exactly what they required to nail this qualification. But if only he remained! After his wicket in the end of the 11th over for a brilliant 63 (34) with 9 boundaries, it seemed ten Doeschate & Edwards really didn't care about the premise and slowly blocked their way to victory. The Dutch eventually reached the total in the final over with 4 balls to spare- but they are now eliminated, and the Zimbabweans will breathe a sigh of relief as they advance to the next stage which the men in orange have so heartbreakingly gave up.

:ned: Netherlands won by 5 wickets

MOTM: Wesley Barresi

Points: Netherlands 2, Hong Kong 0
