India - peaked too early

now, for most people they are the favourites for the tournament but I'm wondering if perhaps they peaked a bit early.

2008 and 2009 sehwag was for me the best batsman in the world, but he's not hit those heights this year. he was a bit limp in south africa, and yes, yes, the seaming track thing, call me naive but I don't believe players that hit run a ball 200s and 300s all of a sudden become duds just because it's moving a bit more, there is form issues. he was well below par against new zealand as well.

tendulkar too is in fantastic test form, but he's played 4 ODIs in the last 14 months, I do wonder if it's adequate preperation for a world cup. Furthermore India's excellent test form has been largely down to Laxman, he's basically won them 3 matches, near single handedly in 2010. However he's someone that's not there.

Dhoni is not quite the menace in ODIs he was at one point either. a year or two ago he was easily the best wicket-keeper bat in the format, but his form has gone south since then. 2008 and 2009 his average was incredible, but he made one century since 2010 and notable that was in january.

add to this Yuvraj, their one time ODI specialist, is totally off the boil and the supporting cast of young players to complete the line up has been a revolving door of promise one minute and then failure. Sharma has become Raina has become Kohli. Kohli is undoubtedly in form right now, but he's inexperienced.

Gambhir is the only one with form heading in the right direction going into the world cup and I just wonder if going in to this India might find themselves not quite doing as well as they feel they should, given the high standards their batsmen were reaching 12 months ago.

They have 8 matches to get back into form. (2 warmups, 6 group stage).

I think our batting will be fine. If we lose, it'll be because of our underwhelming bowling.

We are nowhere near our peak. We havent hit our peak in ODI's. Tests is a completely different ball game. In ODI's, we recently lost to SA 3-2 (we should have actually lost it 5-0 seeing the way we played; we escaped with a 3-2 result). Sachin, Sehwag, Gambhir are returning from injuries. Yuvraj has been the punching bag in recent times for his form and attitude issues. Dhoni is nowhere near his best, Raina starts seeing red with a little bit of bounce, Yusuf Pathan is another guy who is a "hit and miss" guy though his recent hundreds seem to give some hope. Our bowling is always our weak link.

In fact I am surprised that we are considered favorites. The only home team to win a World Cup was Sri Lanka in 96. No other home team won a World Cup. So home advantage also has never helped teams win World Cups. I guess people equate our test form to our fortunes in ODI's. So we are never hit our peak at any point of time.

when i say peaked, i mean more in the long term sense.

mind you, by what I'm saying they should have been on top form in 2009 and they were pretty guff in the champions trophy.

Probably yes. India is nowhere near to their peak at the moment. They always relay on their long and experienced batting lineup but this lineup always surprise the viewers with their awful batting too. You can not totally relay on your batting to win you every single match.

Secondly India are usually favorites from quite some time to win every single tournament but sadly most of the time their performance is pretty bad when it comes to big tournaments. I guess the reason is too much hype and over confidence. Look at their performance in 2007 T20 WC, they were not very much among the favorites but since they were not over confident about their abilities, they went on to win that tournament.

Yeah, over confident and huge egos. This is what I feel will bring India's downfall, once again maybe. Plus, India have got fans who only tend to support them when they win and if they lose the so called 'fans' jump on them.

India just showed in today's warm up that they have got a lot to prove and are ready to fight it out.

That.

Zaheer and Nehra disappointed a lot in the 2003, Zaheer opened the bowling and got whacked from the first over in that final and we just lost it in the first innings with that super total. They're our lead bowlers again.

There are few forms problems but still if you look other tems there is no perfect of them.Aussies lost ashes,England lost 6/1.South Africa are chokers and not a good side in SC.Sri Lanka also have some bowling problems.WI and NZL are out before the tournament and well pakistan as Harsha says dont say anything about them lets enjoy them

I think that the downfall of the big guns of the Cricket and the SC conditions allowed India to be favorites

1. Sachin, Sehwag and Gambhir are back in the team
2. We are playing at home
3. Our recent results- which have been surprisingly counted as a 5-0 NZ whitewash and an Australian whitewash[which is not the case]
4. Media

The above 4 reason say that we are favorites.
A close look into the recent results that we have achieved tells you that each result was achieved largely due to the performance of a single individual. Agreed, we are definitely on top in the Test arena. ODI is a bit of concern.

The warm up showed that we are nowhere near our best. A major area of concern is our middle order which needs to get going- Dhoni, Yuvraj and Raina.

He won't be in the final XI for sure. Virat is more likely to take his place in the team, unless Dhoni feels for CSK teammate.
