India Team Discussion

I would just end up with Kohli had a leader in him that failed to grow with time. Again not gonna jump on that bandwagon why and how.......

My views on his leadership are just inconsistent. If I speak in his support people will come up with counter criticisms and call me dull on my Cricket knowledge and if I speak against him I will be tagged as a hater!
Take a stand else I will tag you a no good fence sitter

Perhaps I am neutral about him

Certain things I don't like about him:-

1. Him being ignorant about the challenges an opposition can throw on a given day.
2. The constant chest thumping that India have played the best brand of Cricket compared to the opposition.
3. Going at the face of the opposition in the name of sledging.
4. Not giving security to certain players with regarding their spots.
5. Ignoring the flaws of the team and not willing to work on it.
6. Not learning from past mistakes.

Things I like about him:-

1. His determination to never give up.
2. Him taking a stand to protect his players.
3. Motivating everyone to push their limits to bring the best out of them.
4. The way he supported Mohammed Siraj.
5. His efforts towards making India concentrate on their fitness regimes and promoting the culture of pace bowlers.
6. His honesty and straight-forwardness

To be honest I really liked the Kohli era. But truth is he wasn’t just as a good a captain in limited overs. I really think he should have continued as Test captain at least until a second in command was ready but I suspect there is some back room reason for the decision.

Umm... Heard you all fellas! It's a shocker of a decision for sure, however personally I felt it's good. A team with ice and fire and multiple groups within, can't be a team at all. You talk about winning mindset, giving back attitude, made us play the way we did. I'd say this made Kohli believe he's non replaceable as captain. If he plays, he will as captain and field a team as he see fit. Did Dada lack that aggression? No, but he was a leader. Sadly kohli is more like a dictator. Sounds funny I know, hope you get it.
Every captain in team india, groomed a future captain from within. Who did kohli groom or atleast helped in leadership role? None. We may lose few future series. We may miss this WTC final. But I'm hopeful we'll definitely win a major ICC silverware soon. As of future captains, as funny as it sounds, I still feel Rahane is the man to lead in Tests. Rohit in White ball cricket. Rahul and Shreyas to be groomed for future.

TBH, I have a strong feeling that both Rahane and Pujara were not able to get any semblance of consistency with their batting because the team environment was very insecure in test cricket. The constant chopping and changing was there for all to see. I know Rahane and Pujara survived through it and were rarely moved around, but everything around them moved around so much that they constantly played in an environment of the sword hanging over their head forever. It is due to their inner strength that they always seemed to come up with that good innings whenever they were so close to the edge of being axed, and they kept surviving.

In a fantasy, ideal world, I would like to see Rahane announced as the permanent test captain (with Kohli as just a batsman) and Rahane lead the team for a few years before he hands it over to someone else. But..... 1) Rahane has lost all the patience with the public who watch test cricket regularly these days and an indication of it was him losing vice captaincy to Rohit Sharma / KL Rahul. 2) If Rahane leads the test team now, him/Pujara will stay in the XI and this will mean that a future long term captain has no opportunity to get into the XI, settle himself and then take over the reins. You cant drop Kohli the batsman, who is still the premier batsman in the world.

As I see it, Rahane's time has probably ended. Maybe Pujara could get a small extension of time, but tough to say since India play most of their upcoming tests at home and they could be inclined to move on from both these players and boldly play Gill and Shreyas/Vihari.

Absolutely!

I disagree! Rahane still have lots left in Test cricket. He is playing in a very uncomfortable team environment. His toughness is visible on those gritty knocks he had been playing. Gill, Vihari, Sheyas on regular basis and Bharat (mostly in sub-continent first) should rather be given chances in test squad. I'd rather see Rohit completely transit over to white ball cricket, take the helm and give it all with whatever little career left in him. He is aging too. May sound ambitious but I see Rahul to take over white-ball and Shreyas to red-ball in 5 years.

Wow the audacity of some people.
:lol

The Kohli era was an era of missed opportunities. With the talent and money at their disposal, this India team should've been at the same level as the Windies in the 80s or Waugh and Ponting's Aussie teams. They choked in key matches in LOs tournaments. In Tests, they should've won in South Africa twice, and New Zealand. First it was inconsistent selection and bowling that cost them, and then when those problems were fixed, lack of batting form cost them.

I humbly disagree on KL Rahul. To me, he's another Kohli type player who is best left alone to do his thing with his batting. He always had the talent, and he's just starting to find that elusive consistency and is on the cusp of blossoming into a terrific all-format batsman. He should be left alone. Also he is another guy who lets his emotions rule and makes some pretty damning statements (his recent "whole world playing against 11 guys" statement was pretty damaging). Such vulnerabilities dont suit someone earmarked for captaincy. Also he struggled big time with Punjab in the IPL and also constantly went into his own batting meltdown.

Agree on Shreyas. He's captaincy material and the sooner he gets it, the better it would be.

Rather have courage to directly reply to them?

I still dont understand the hostility from the person that you're posting this reply to. Been harping from my side for ages that "all I post is my own opinions" and it could be flawed and people are welcome to argue against it. Just because I've existed in this forum for a few decades, doesn't mean my opinions become gospel. I do see a few other old timers concur with some (not all!) of my opinions, but that does not make my opinion the 'fact'. It's just a bunch of ppl having the same opinions.

I guess no one remembers Clive Lloyd's West Indies cause they didn't win the WTC.
In all honesty, Clive Lloyd's team is remembered for its twin World Cup wins. So, is Australia. Steve Waugh is remembered for his 16 consecutive tests on a trot. Please, enlighten ne, what exactly has Kohli's India achieved that is so worthy of someone picking it up 20 years from now?

Precisely my thoughts. If they do not have a solid test captain, the best bet would be to give it to Rahane over the course of the next 2-3 series. Use this time, meanwhile to trial out different vice-captains/have interviews like they have in England and Australia. Of course, given the current circumstances, the chances of this happening are close to zero.

In Rahane's defence, I think he was hard done in. The bloke hasnt had any time away and has played every single test match since the beginning of the year. Kohli and others have had the luxury of staying away and resting themsleves. Really feel they ought to have given Rahane and Pujara a rest during the England series. Might have had better results from them.

Would love to but the opposition should be sensible not some stuck up people
Don't think there should be oppositions on a public forums. We all are part of the same community so we can still find some common ground. Taking jibes at other members is not gonna help the cause.

We are not uni mind to have same thoughts.

I gonna do what I do.

Kohli has a win record of almost 60% (58.82) in test cricket as captain which is an awesome record for > 50 matches as captain.

He may have lost some series he should have won but he will be remembered as india‘s most successful test captain (until someone else overtakes him, which may be considerably hard) and one who has an unblemished home record and made india winning overseas a regular feature and becoming no. 1 ranked team In test cricket. I am old enough to vaguely remember India’s performances from the Azharuddin era and no modern captain for India has come close to Kohli according to me.

Yes his white ball record leaves much to be desired but I treat Test cricket as the pinnacle format and would trade World Cup win for Test series wins in all SENA countries (which he has not achieved but made a good start)
