India tour of Australia - 2018/19

Yes, Dhoni may have played a tad too slow but he played according to the situation which was most important. Being 4/3 doesn't mean he should go full out for boundaries and attack. He absorbed pressure and allowed Rohit to settle in too. He did what he was supposed to do today according to the events that unraveled at the beginning of the innings.

Rohit lacked support at the back end of the innings. It was looking fairly difficult for him to finish the game off when he was clearly tiring. Disappointing for Karthik and Jadeja, perhaps they should've taken more responsibility.

Finch was a bit too conservative today in his captaincy, India could've capitalized on attacking Lyon and Stonis more. Behrendorff and Richardson were brought so late into the attack when Rohit and Dhoni were already settled.

Jadhav needs to come back into the side. DK just cannot replicate his domestic form into international cricket.

Reckon we need a finisher if Dhoni bats at 4 for India till the world cup? Pandya would have been the ideal choice at six but considering the current fiasco maybe draft in Pant at 5 or 6. Also not a fan of Jadeja in the ODI and the likes of Dinesh Karthik needs to perform at the top level no excuse for him really was playing the Ranji games for Tamil Nadu.

Pant lacks the required experience. I would go for someone like Raina, Rahane or maybe even recall Yuvi.

I think we need to give the same team another chance. No point in chopping and cutting after just a single chance.

It's just a bilateral series anyways. We can afford to lose it

I dont really care about the result. The critical things this series are the combination that India should mostly use for the World Cup. Dhoni showed today that he is good at resurrecting in case of a collapse. Therefore, Dhoni should bat No.4 if the openers and Kohli fail and India are in trouble. If the openers and Kohli fire, push Dhoni down to the point where he isn't even needed to bat.

I guess Karthik never takes his chances when he keeps getting them on a platter these days. He did that one innings against Bangladesh in that T20 final and ever since, he has been all cold. Jadhav can't be kept out for long because he bowls. And a more crucial bat since he is a finisher. Somehow I am not convinced that Rayudu/Karthik/Jadhav should be our only middle order options for the WC. We need someone else in there - a player who can effortlessly shift to fifth gear when needed. I think we need such a player even if that player is a little raw. I feel all signs point to Rishabh Pant getting a go even though he hasn't played enough ODI's.

Agarwal and Vijay Shankar replace Rahul and Pandya

Agarwal is a good replacement for Rahul. I'd even go as far to say that it can be a long term replacement, including for the 2019 WC. But Vijay Shankar? I am not convinced that he has it in him to be Pandya's replacement. I doubt if we will find a seaming allrounder soon enough. We might as well play Jadeja as the allrounder and have a specialist third seamer. Playing Jadeja will mean only one leggie plays at a time, but that's not an issue as Jadeja is a good bowling option and can keep things tight as well as pick wickets and he has been in form recently.

Pant should not play until end of World Cup. He lacks experience.

Anyone but Pant. Karthik and Dhoni are better

Sai, we can kiss the WC goodbye if this is our approach even in pointless ODIs like this. Dhoni looks like he does`nt want to take risks in even games like this! This is`nt the first time either. The England tour went downhill from the horrible lack of intent at Lords. No intent of counterattack. Not at any stage during the Rohit-MSD partnership did it looked like he believed a game can be won. Sometimes, to win big events you have to show the ability to dream. Dhoni`s batting almost seems cynical and looks like he is way too practical and does not believe games can be turned around. So he just settles for mediocre knocks at SR of 50 so often. Coming from a fan of the side in the 90s, Jadeja used to play so many of these pointless knocks. This is very similar. I`d take someone who can take me by surprise over how a `mature head' like Dhoni is now playing. Imagine, we are 4/4 in a WC semi-final chasing 330. Dhoni would just drag out the eventual loss but someone like a Pant might actually believe he can pull us out of the rut (even if he is`nt a finished product).

Adi - I strongly believe that Dhoni SHOULD NOT BE playing the 2019 World Cup. But we do not have a chance of that happening unless Dhoni voluntarily hangs up his boots in time before the WC, right? This does not make me any less of a fan of Dhoni (I am still a huge fan of the guy) but I already believe he is way past his date. Even though I am not a big fan of Rishabh Pant, I believe in an ideal scenario, Pant should actually replace Dhoni in this ODI side and not play alongside Dhoni. Keep Karthik in the team as the backup keeper and play Pant ahead of Dhoni. I believe Pant might get the 20's and 30's but at a much faster rate than Dhoni. On his day, Pant can be that finisher than India wants.

But I dont see it happening unless Dhoni quits himself. And in that case, we just have to hope and pray that the top order bats long enough and that Dhoni does not need to bat. And this is going to surely cost us a crucial knockout game and hence we are not going to win the WC.

Looks like Cricinfo posted wrong info earlier. Its not Mayank Agarwal who is replacing KL Rahul. It's actually Shubman Gill, who is replacing KL Rahul.

Wow, this is very interesting a move to give Shubman Gill a chance here, with just 5 months to go for the World Cup. Agarwal also has not played ODI cricket but he was battle ready by playing the two test matches in Australia. Gill is completely new to international senior cricket. I think Agarwal was the better choice (unless he is not available to be selected).

Karma is hitting right back at MS Dhoni. Remember how 11 years ago he made a decision of removing the senior players out of the team (DRAVID & GANGULY) citing the reason they were slow. Perhaps its time for someone to show the clip of Dhoni's own biopic to him where he said to the selectors ,"We are all servants and we are all doing national duty".

I don't want anyone to be the part of the Playing XI who is not in the prospects of playing the WC this year as it disturbs the performance pattern that we are looking forward to in the WC. Shubman doesn't fulfill the role required to get into the playing XI or the WC squad of this Indian team. He is aggressive and flamboyant and is a elegant stroke-maker which is something like Rohit Sharma who is not that good at strike rotation so I don't think Shubman would be that good at rotating the strike either as far as I've watched him since the U-19 WC last year. It's better we don't play him till post WC

Saw a recent video of Jadhav impressing team mates with his MJ style dance moves :D Looks like the guy has lost a lot of weight. He looked pretty thin in that video. If he has really lost all that weight recently, must see how that translates into his agility on the field and on his running between wickets. Hope it also leads to him tearing his hamstring less often :p:yes

I would also not put MSD on that plane to London. I think his methods are jaded and almost outdated. His role behind the stumps is a value addition and often over stated in my book. I would personally retain the current top 3 followed by Pant at 4. Pant is the tonic needed in the middle overs and he can take a lot of pressure off the top 3, specially Kohli when confronted with a stiff chase. Kohli has created an aura, much like Tendulkar in the 90's and Dhoni in the last decade where his sheer presence means India is ahead in the game.

I think people are harsh on DK. He has played some really good knocks finishing and he will be the exact sort of person needed to either rotate, play shots, finish or completely tear an attack apart. He now has the experience and I really feel his time is now. Hardik Pandya at 6 with strict no floating. He is someone who can smack, bang, wallop and that's about it. He's no number 4. Jadeja to always play at 7. Kuldeep as my spinner, Bhuvi, Jassi and Shami.
