India's Tour of Sri Lanka

not really, mendis isn't a big spinner of the ball and nor he bowls fast as kumble. the kind of bowling he does. .he will get more batsmen out by bowled or lbw, than caught slip.
That still means there will be more edges than what he's got. :p

Still, pretty funny how much hype and discussion there is and how much everyone is trying to learn about Mendis, while Murali could maybe take 5 or 6 wickets here without anyone really noticing.

142/5, India really need to rely on a strong second innings and some helpful weather but many lessons have been learnt. Dravid, Tendulkar, Laxman and Ganguly have all had quality time in the middle against Mendis and must be acustomed to him. It has become clear that his main weapon is the 'carrom ball' which skids and leg breaks and the batsmen now know to look out for it. On the bowling front, it is clear that Zaheer Khan does not have the fitness to bowl 40 overs in a day without about half being at 120kph. Either, it is necessary to play three seamers or Zaheer cannot be expected to play in the second Test which starts on Thursday - he is clearly not fully fit and has never been a good bowler on flat pitches. People are going to call this an overreaction, but people following my posts know that I have never rated Zaheer's ability outside seaming pitches.

India need pace bowlers capable of getting wickets quickly, no matter how expensively, to catalyse the game when Sri Lankan batsmen are methodically taking it away - I think the bowler for this is VRV Singh, who has a FC strike rate of 40, and took 18 wickets in just 2 games in the Duleep Trophy (zonal competition).

What in gods earth was Karthik doing, surely in the situation that was the opposite was what was needed.

On the other hand, you can't let Muralitharan and Mendis bowl to you; it is tough, this pitch is made well to suit them but not Kumble and Harbhajan. It is slow spin, but Muralitharan's wrist action and Mendis' carrom bowl skid on to negate this.

He was still a tad over audaicious for the situation, Im all for playing positvely against the spinners but he just looked reckless.

What a poor shot by Karthik.

Wheres Cricketman now

Stupid shot to say the least. And that after playing a reverse sweep which he could easily have top-edged.

Third sweep he played to Murali, too. Obviously didn't read the ball and it seems that maybe he wasn't confident in his defences, very anxious to demonstrate his scoring shot.

Whatever happened to RP Singh? I'm not expert on Indian cricket, but he was pretty decent when he toured here last summer.

He bowls often too full and too short and his control of line is often awful so he is very expensive. Consequently, he just gets picked off on flat pitches. Due to his fantastic seam position, which points to 2 o'clock, he will get swing in Australia or England but in India, it doesn't swing that much for him and so is manageable for international batsmen.

It's between Zaheer, Ishant and RP. Ishant has been really awesome and provides pace and bounce which is needed. And between Zaheer and RP it's always going to be Zaheer for the fact that he's more consistent and can swing the ball both ways and has experience.

Even I will admit, there is absolutely no condoning a swipe like that. I nearly fell off my seat with laughter after that reverse sweep though, wtf was he doing?

Munaf Patel is also in the equation, he is an economical Test bowler and just needs to more consistently produce the wicket taking delivery.

India will likely follow on tomorrow. What's up with Sehwag playing an ODI innings in a Test match?
