Mendis is exciting but Murali is bigger threat: Harbhajan

NEW DELHI: Harbhajan Singh does not doubt mystery spinner Ajantha Mendis' potentials but the star off-spinner believes it is old trickster Muttiah Muralitharan who would pose bigger threat for the Indian batsmen in the forthcoming Test series.

Harbhajan heaps praise on Mendis, who ran through India's famed ODI batting order in the Asia Cup final in Karachi, and said it was an extraordinary display of quality spin bowling.

"It was a treat to watch Mendis bowl during the Asia Cup final," Harbhajan told ESPN's 'Sportscenter' programme.

Here's some more about Mendis:

Too early to assess Mendis - Jenner

July 16, 2008

Terry Jenner, the former Australian legspinner who mentored Shane Warne, has said while Sri Lankan spinner Ajantha Mendis is an exciting prospect, it is too early to assess him.

Laxmi Ratan Shukla* said:
“I was very curious and wanted to play him in the nets very next day. When he bowled to me, I played defensively to his first two balls. Because I had heard a lot about him, I focused a lot more on his hand when he was releasing the ball. Next thing I knew, I could easily tell which one was going to cut out and which was going to zip in. He tried all his variations, but I was picking the straighter one as well,” he says.

I think they'll both be frustrating in a home series.

A brief peek suggests India's sole tour match before the series will be washed out.

The first test match will probably be washed out as well. Have a look at this. Thunderstorms are predicted from July 17-26 and possibly further but the extended forcast doesn't go that far.

wth?? why does bhajji always give interviews on how he wants to win matches for india?? the knob should just go and practice in the nets.

kumble has won so many matches for india and u rarely see him give interviews.

India really need a bowling all-rounder. I like the fact that they are playing 2 spinners in the sub continent but going in with just 2 fast bowlers is a big risk and especially with the 2 fast bowler that will probably play. Both Khan and Sharma have been injured allot over the past year and if one goes down they are stuck with Ganguly as the other "pace" option.

We have Pathan, but he is too fond of the batsmen now that he's forgotten his job; you could say he's lovestruck. He wasn't selected though.

He said we need a bowling all-rounder who is a pace bowler. Piyush isn't a pace bowler.

He bowls almost at a military medium pace though. There isn't much bounce in Sri Lankan wickets as it is.
