New Zealand are captained by Geoff Howarth and have a decent team on paper at the time, with a good opening pair, some solid batsmen, good spinners, and a varied seam bowling attack.
Pakistan were strong at this time featuring some excellent batsman and a varied bowling attack, they start the series as slight favourites due to a stronger batting lineup.

Karachi XI v New Zealanders - 3 day match - at National Stadium, Karachi - 1980/1 - Match Preview

New Zealand face a Karachi XI composed of Pakistan Test players who were either born in Karachi or played domestic games for Karachi based teams.
The team will feature 2 Lahore based players (Naved Anjum, Tahir Naqqash) because I didn't quite have enough Karachi based players for a full XI.
New Zealand are at full strength for this one, using their expected Test XI, with Richard Hadlee leading a strong bowling attack and left armer Stephen Boock preferred to John Bracewell as the spinner.
Karachi XI look strong in batting and have a good pair of spinners with their only real weakness being the lack of cutting edge in their seam attack.

Karachi XI: Sadiq Mohammad, Taslim Arif (wk), Qasim Umar, Javed Miandad (c), Zaheer Abbas, Haroon Rasheed, Naved Anjum, Tahir Naqqash, Tauseef Ahmed, Iqbal Qasim

New Zealanders: J.G.Wright, B.A.Edgar, G.P.Howarth (c), J.M.Parker, M.G.Burgess, J.V.Coney, W.K.Lees (wk), R.J.Hadlee, B.L.Cairns, S.B.Troup, S.L.Boock

Pitch: 33 - A hard-baked track. A good batting wicket but may crumble late in the game.
Day 1 Starting Pitch: 2 - Good Batting Wicket
Day 1 Weather: 1 - Hot and Humid
Injuries: None

Karachi XI v New Zealanders - 3 day match - at National Stadium, Karachi - 1980/1 - New Zealanders 1st Innings

Karachi XI captain Javed Miandad won the Toss and decided to take advantage of Humid conditions aiding Swing by electing to bowl first.
It seemed a gamble with the wicket Good Batting Wicket on Day 1 and possibly becoming Uneven late in the game, but for the New Zealanders 1st innings the decision mostly paid off.
Right arm fast medium bowler Tahir Naqqash found himself on a hattrick when John Parker fell first ball for a duck and the score slipped to 29/3, and from there the visitors never really recovered.
Opener Bruce Edgar batted for most of the innings for an excellent 89 off 162 balls with 6 fours, but the New Zealanders were all out shortly after Tea on Day 1 for a disappointing 191.
Pace bowlers Sikander Bakht and Tahir Naqqash enjoyed the extra Swing on offer in sharing 7 wickets, while the experienced left arm spinner Iqbal Qasim also impressed with 3-34.

Karachi XI v New Zealanders - 3 day match at National Stadium, Karachi - 1980/1 - Karachi 1st Innings

Karachi XI openers Sadiq Mohammad and Taslim Arif took their side to Stumps on Day 1 without the loss of a wicket with the score at 57/0, and the home side firmly on top.
The weather changed from Hot and Humid to Cloudy With Some Sunny Intervals for the start of Day 2 meaning the batsmen had less to worry about from Swing.
The opening pair continued untroubled until Taslim Arif fell shortly after posting a patient half century, the score a solid 120/1 after the loss of his wicket.
Number 3 Qasim Umar became bogged down and momentum was lost before wickets began to fall to the perservering New Zealanders attack.
Sadiq Mohammad top scored with a well made 84 before allrounder Naved Anjum was forced to retire hurt after a nasty blow on the hand from a Richard Hadlee bouncer, sparking a declaration.
Karachi XI captain Javed Miandad was mindful of leaving his batsmen enough time for a final day run chase in case they were lucky enough to bowl the New Zealanders out cheaply a 2nd time and declared after his team had taken a 19 run lead.

Karachi XI v New Zealanders - 3 day match - at National Stadium, Karachi - 1980/1 - New Zealanders 2nd Innings

At 106/5 in their 2nd innings and with a lead of just 87 the New Zealanders were in some trouble, but a 75 run stand for the 6th wicket between allrounder Jeremy Coney and wicket keeper Warren Lees revived the innings.
Lees made an important half century that seemed to sure up his Test place for now after starting the tour under pressure from reserve keeper Ian Smith.
Tauseef Ahmed and Tahir Naqqash grabbed a couple of wickets each but the visitors were allowed to set a target 171 and leave themselves 38 overs to bowl Karachi XI out on a pitch that will be Uneven after Tea.

Karachi XI v New Zealanders - 3 day match - at National Stadium, Karach - 1980/1 - Karachi XI 2nd Innings

New Zealanders strike bowler Richard Hadlee took two wickets in a dramatic final over to win an entertaining match with 3 balls to spare.
Set 171 to win in 38 overs which a rain break reduced to an eventual 32, Karachi XI collapsed on an Uneven pitch to be all out for 52 and lose the match by 118 runs.
Hadlee was simply outstanding, returning figures of 10.3-6-5-4 to win the Man of the Match award.

Pakistan A v New Zealanders - 4 day match - at Rawalpindi - 1980/1 - Match Preview

The New Zealanders are coming off a loss and face a strong looking Pakistan A side in a 4 day match at Rawalpindi.
A good performance here by players on either team could book them a place in the Test squad so this is an important form guide for the matches ahead.
The New Zealanders have rested Richard Hadlee from their lineup in order to manage his workload ahead of a busy Test schedule.

Pitch: (pre 1988) - 27 - The wicket looks green and the groundsman has reported problems in preparation. It seems probable that it will favour the bowlers later in the match.

Pakistan A v New Zealanders - 4 day match - at Rawalpindi - 1980/1 - New Zealanders 1st Innings

After batting first on a Green Wicket the New Zealanders would have felt their first innings was about par for the conditions.
Half centuries to Glenn Turner and Mark Burgess were important innings for both players ahead of the Tests.
There was also another solid innings from keeper Warren Lees who seems to have sealed his Test spot, and runs to a fired up Chris Cairns who hit 31 off 19 balls with 3 fours and 3 sixes.
Pakistan A opening bowlers Sarfraz Nawaz and Sikander Bakht picked up 3 wickets each in the race to parter Imran Khan in the Test series.
