Ok, in another thread that I was clearly hijacking I raised the following question. I thought I'd put it to the forum and see what it is that people dream of. What is it that tickles the fantastical within each individual's brain.

"Now, if you maybe asked what new ball pairing through time (whether a double act or sticking two different players together) would make you race to the first morning of a Test Match in the hope of not missing a single ball if they bowl. That might have been more interesting? In fact, to expand on that, what ground, in what conditions and against which batsmen? What would make your ideal first test match morning?

"Anyway, any thoughts on my counter question? What would be your ideal first morning of a test match. Who would be at the crease, who would be opening the bowling? Would it be a flat sunny day with Sehwag about to smash 100 in a session? Or would it be something fantastical like an old WACA ripe with bounce and pace, Thompson and Akhtar storming in at 95mph+ flinging them at a resolute Boycott, unflinching, unmoved whilst Haynes tries to take them on?

----------

Or would you just like to see Boycott's Gran with a stick of rhubard get hit in the head by a 70mph bouncer?"

So, my question. What is your personal cricketing utopia? I'll expand it from the original quoted question to include all forms of cricket.

What ground, who is batting and who is bowling? What are the conditions? For example, would you want to turn up to see Holding snaffle Sehwag for 1 with a vicious short delivery into the body on a pacey Perth pitch of the 80's? With Atherton having limply fended to gully off a seaming McGrath textbook delivery. Walking to the crease, with the sun beginning to poke through the initial clouds is Viv, on his way to join Sir Don who has watched from the other end after the wicket fell on the last ball of the 5th over. After digging in against some ferocious bowling and with the end of the first session 3 balls away a ripper from Warne catches Viv's outside edge as he looks to play against the spin on 41. Sir Don, unmoved on 25 enjoys his lunch with new man at the crease Steve Waugh. Then with the sun out, Sir Don begins to unfurl in the second session....

Anyway, obviously I've gone into quite a bit of detail there, perhaps too much :p Essentially your own personal opinion could literally be turning up to see that Jayasauriya and Afridi are batting against some part time club level spinners on a tiny ground. There is no judging here, merely whimsical musings :) Maybe Lee and Akhtar are storming in to a small but dogged Gavasker. Or perhaps the pitch is falling apart as Laker and Murali begin to rip through the opposition.

Go wild ....

Right now, bowler friendly pitch, Steyn steaming in, destroying all batsman in his way but one batsman stands tall and defiant (preferably Rahul Dravid since I'm a Dravid fan).

Yeah, there's always something awesome to it when it seems like batting is impossible yet one player will just show that they want it more than anyone else. Normally ends up with them taking hits on elbows, backs, helmets and as they keep ticking over it's impossible not to just be slightly awestruck at the sheer drive, determination and essentially at the heart of it all, skill that is on display :)

Good first shout. Certainly, in the contemporary game that would be an excellent duel :) Whereabouts would you like to be sat? Maybe Cape Town on the lovely grass bank stand? Just sitting back in admiration?

Waseem Akram bowling left arm over the wicket with a reversing ball to Rahul Dravid or any batsman of his class.

Shoaib Akhter Bowling to Ponting on the Wacca wicket would also do :thumbs

Depends...if I'm at the ground I like to see big hits and fast bowling. So pick a few batsmen out of Gilchrist, Afridi, Jayasuriya, Sehwag, Symonds, Gayle etc. and a few bowlers out of Shoaib Akhtar, Lee, Tait, Kemar Roach, Waqar and Wasim, Shane Bond - all the guys who could crank it up. I'm ruling out the time machine options at this stage like Richards or Botham vs Thomson and Holding.

If I'm at home watching on TV, I love to watch good bowling because it's much easier to appreciate it on TV than at the ground. In particular good spin bowling is easier to understand at home. So watching SK Warne and Murali bowl in tandem against great players of spin like Lara, Flower, Lehmann, Clarke, Laxman and Tendulkar would be an ideal afternoon of TV viewing.

one reason i curl up and wince at the spot fixing scandal is quite honestly, I never enjoyed watching cricket more than when Asif was bowling. Just getting it to nip off the seam in that range where he felt keeping it around 80mph was about right.

better if it's a defensive batsman too, someone trying to keep him out. Ball whistling past the edge, him strolling back to his mark mumbling to himself like god was personally insulting him for not giving him a wicket for making the batsman look like a complete tool.

India and England are the only two opposition teams that get me excited on the morning of the first day. The ground doesn't matter so much, as long as it's in Australia, maybe the WACA slightly above the others.

In honesty, my excitement levels are probably at their highest in today's era with young, unproven guys like Cummins, Pattinson, Hughes, Warner, Khawaja etc.
McGrath and Warne were just too good, I tuned in just to see them crush opposition and it pretty much felt like we were cheating by having one, let alone two of the greatest bowlers ever.

Seaming, bouncy wicket. Steyn, Anderson, Broad, Tremlett. Pace, Swing, Bounce, intelligence. Up against a lineup who won't fold like a pack of cheap cards (ala NZ and BD), but batsmen who actually know how to leave the ball, and bide their time. Cook, Dravid, Trott, Sachin, Hussey, VVS. Throw in an intelligent, skillful spinner such as Ajmal, Swann or Afridi. Good times. Battle of wits, patience, skill.

For me atmosphere is more important than conditions. You an have the most sporting wicket of all time with movement and spin but if there are not enough spectators and atmosphere is dull then it fells so boring. Nothing beat a fully jam packed WACA chanting bowlers name and then increase in chanting in rhythm as the bowler approaches the wicket. Thats what gives life to test cricket.

Some excellent posts everyone, thanks for contributing :)

I see Sifter's point entirely, yet I think I'm with AngryPixel. Even though I might have a better idea as to what the bowler is doing on Tv, I think a fully packed boxing day test match in Australia would have all the drama and atmosphere to make up for a lack of details. To be there, in the moment, I think is something special in Sport (that it's on my list of things to do before I die is telling ha). That said, I guess I'm with Sifter still, because if I was there, I suppose witnessing a batsmen produce a sublime knock of skill and determination is what is going to thrill a live crowd and is easier to appreciate? Does this explain why for the benefit of the paying customers, pitches are generally batsmen friendly (obviously, there is the financial implications of matches not lasting long enough too)?

Although, you only have to look at the excitement in the crowd on TV when someone like Freddie was bowling "that over" to Ponting. How much would I have given to be cheering every ball like it was the winning delivery in a test match.

Interesting answer Sedition :) I like that for you the thought of witnessing someone making that breakthrough, of having been there before they were the "superstar" they become is fascinating. Sort of like saying I was there when Sobers hit his 365 to announce himself to the world of cricket after flattering to deceive. I was there when Cummings picked up 9 on debut, and ten years later he had 500 test wickets. Like you're thinking.

Certainly seems most people really appreciate a real battle of bat on ball. Help for bowlers, but a good pitch with pace so batsmen get value for their shots.

Surprised that no one has mentioned sitting down, seeing their team has won the toss and watching Slater and Sehwag carve into the opening attack, breaking record after record as balls fly in more directions than a gay orgy.

I've never been to a live test since I live in scotland. I did intend to go to the australia v pakistan one held in england but there was some reason I couldn't (that I've forgotten)

however, I have been to a few one dayers and I find the fast bowling extremely exciting. Malinga and brett lee in particular got everyone excited when they came on. however, part of this was because in scotland we get small crowds and I can usually get a seat on the boundary rope, and they're small boundaries too so you can see everything in pretty clear detail.

I'd want to see Bond and Lee at their peaks share the new ball. Preferably against a solid batting lineup and make them earn their runs.

And, another one would be to watch Shane Warne bowl. Just that. I'd do anything to watch him spin his magic.

Most recently I took my housemate to the 4th day of Cardiff for England v Sri Lanka because Groupon had ?25 tickets. Ground was mostly empty due to the rain, most of the morning was rained off in fact. So, we spent the day in a nearby hostel we found drinking and watching the F1. As it cleared up and we got news play would start after Lunch we headed to the ground. I won't lie, that for his first ever cricket game it was an excellent day. Barely anyone there, but we had top class seats behind the bowler and no queues for the bar all day.

Not to mention, my mate claims he got inside Sangakarra's head when he went and asked him to sign his boundary placard and was the main reason for their collapse the next day haha

Now, that day we witnessed, what at the time seemed to be Bell and Morgan smashing some fairly unimportant runs, but the fact we were there made it so much more of an experience. As we drank ourselves silly and got chatting with people around us it was such a nice day, where all of us seemed to appreciate that we'd all made the effort to bother to come.

You can imagine our joy when the next day on TV, we got to see that Morgans quick cameo and Bell's delightfully elegant 98* had actually set up an improbable victory! My mate says he can still see Bell dance down the pitch and loft the most perfectly timed and effortless 6 back over our heads :)

Oooooo Stinky, you got to see Lee and Malinga charge in? That must have been awesome at a small, intimate ground :) Does rapid even come close to describing it ha?

Yeah I agree User. Being there while Warne goes through a spell, not just the bowling, the articulations, the drama, the entire show he used to put on. Magic :)

when I saw Lee it was hilarious (in a "all you can do is laugh" way) it was against scotland, so we'd just seen australia bat, dave hussey had marmalised our dolly bowlers and I went to get a pint. while mulling about a bit I heard jurassic park esque thumps coming from somewhere in the direction of the field.

wondering what it was I went over to have a look, only to see brett lee warming up by making the entire ground reverberate every time he slammed the ball into the grass at what seemed like 19 times faster than any of our bowlers. took a blinder of a catch too, you really appreciate fielding more when it's live.

still though, lee was faster but I don't think I've ever seen anything so brutal be cheered on by a crowd as malinga, doing what I can only explain as trying to hurt our batsmen, bowling. He ran through us and it was the better of the two performances but there was a feeling that he was as much interested in breaking bones as he was stumps.

Haha, sadistic bugger :)

Yeah. You only have to play a bit of cricket with people who can't field to realise how good they are. Some of the catches people take, Tv just doesn't do it justice. Even basic stops at point and gully, ain't half as easy as they make it look.

A lot of toe-crushing yorkers by any chance? What a bully haha
