Why is it that so many Australian openers are left handed? Langer,Katich,Hughes,Rob Quiney,Rogers,Warner,Hayden,Jaques,Gilly(he opened for ODI's) and Hussey(has also opened before).

it isnt just the openers who have played for Australia its even the state openers. Is this the case for other countries aswell to have so many left handed openers? and why do you think that there are so many left handed openers?

Most of these guys are probably right handed. So by batting left handed this improves their straight bat technique, glancing, etc which are of course pre requisites for any opener.

Graeme Smith too now that i think about it. There is an unusually high amount of lefties in cricket and baseball compared to other sports like say golf or hockey

I know we are strictly talking about openers here but one Mr D I Gower is as far as I am concerned one of the most elegant and accomplished left-handers I care to remember!

Tamim Iqbal, Mehrab Hossain, Shahriar Nafees, Junaid Siddique, Imrul Kayes.

this must be something to do with it, I notice a lot of the aussie left handers bowl with their right so I think they it's about making sure the top hand is dominant. Even Clarke is a natural lefty who bats right handed.

In india though they are usually natural left handers as they emphasise a more wristy, bottom hand, technique and also they perhaps have less coaching because cricket it player on the streets. Ganguly was a right handed lefty bat, but I think I read that was because his brother was left handed and he adapted so he could use his equipment.

even few years ago, Bangladesh had NO left handed players. i remember selectors ran around to look for a lefty bat or even a bowler.

now its ruled by lefties! from top to bottom

I never knew that. I wonder how he'd go at left hand. What about Ponting?
