Major England ODI Overhaul Needed

Currently, England have two openers who cannot consistanly get England off to a 100/1 off 25 overs steady start nor can they smash more than 70 runs in the powerplays. I do not think that England need to or have to ring in the changes but I do believe that there should be the clear target for one of these from the start of the innings.

Also, Fletches has been criticised somewhat for encouraging scoring behind square, it is a fair tactic, but it must be used to consistantly milk runs off decent bowling instead of getting a single, once an over. I question if the tactic is good for the England team who usually rely on scoring in the V or directly square of the wicket. I believe that rather than imposing this behind the wicket scoring, the batsman should ADD this to their repitoir to score 6 an over off good bowling.

Tom Moody first off. Vaughan out of ODi team second off.

Team:
Tresco
Pietersen
Bell
Strauss (c)
Bopara
Collingwood
Flintoff
Foster/Davies (wk)
Anderson
Broad/Mahmood/not onions, he is shocking from what i've seen and heard.
Panesar

That imo is the best odi team, pinch hitters at the top of the order, with a fantastic player in Bell in at 3 to steady the innings and play strokes. That would be the team i'd use tbh.

Strauss will never be captain. You can't really see a leader in the team at the moment, maybe Collingwood or Pietersen when he matures a bit but not Strauss. Too inconsistent.

Freddie needs to open up in ODI's. We need a genuine attack-minded batsman like Jayasuriya for Sri lanka. The openers determine the batting and we are going out with possibly the 2 most defensive batsman in the team :(

No. Freddy shouldn't open, remember when we tried him up the order, and he failed miserably, because he isnt the type of batsmen that can play the newer ball.
Same with Pietersen, He HAS to bat 4, no higher, otherwise we risk losing his wicket too early, and then we're screwed for the rest of the innings.
The worst thing we could do is manafacture someone into an aggressive opener, they just have to come along, like Jayasuria, Gilchrist etc.

A certain Sussex keeper opens in ODIs, infact in India he got 4 starts iirc. Or Loye. Either way we have to change.

Aye. I'm a big Foster and Davies fan, but in ODI's I'm not opposed to playing Prior, because of how aggresive he is in ODI's kills two birds with one stone.
But in Tests I prefer Foster/Davies.
But again, All for Prior in ODI's.
HE was treated pretty badly by the ECB.

We had an aggressive opener in Loye who got us off to good starts in Australia. Only God knows why he was dumped.

The typical Fletcher reasons.
If he doesn't fit the young/Atheletic and he can't field like a legend then no matter how well you perform in your position, Fletch is going to be right up your arse as soon as you play badly, see Panesar.

owais shah just keeps on sending the england selectors messages
150 not out today

also adil rashid did quite good today too,
made 86 and will soon be challenging monty for spinners slot but knowing how much england value number 8 slot and batting i guess his chance shouldnt be too far away

Rashid hasn't taken enough wickets constantly yet to be considered, just because he bats doesn't mean he should take the spinners role.

Then who is Saj servicing? He's not good at anything except being athletic.

Loye is too old, we need to be looking to the next world cup, build a young team that has talent. Strauss is a more than competent captain and imo the best captain we have. England dont produce pinch hitters at the top of the innings, trescothick is the best we have, and tbh we dont really have him atm. We do need someone though, maybe prior could prove to be a saving grace, have him at the top of the order with someone like Bell, pietersen in at 3 with collingwood and strauss to follow. We then have players that can rebuild an innings, if the top order fail, which is likely. Shah could be an option, he has been consistently scoring runs, but never seems to get a real chance. Also, alex loudon could be an option, he can bowl well (bowled tresco with a doosra in a net session) and isnt bad with the bat, he could be an option. We just need a complete overhaul tbh, need a compelte change in system.

He's only played 8 FC games (7 and the current one) 2 50s, 1 5 for and 2 4 fors. I have alot of faith in the future of Rashid. It could be next year it could be 2009...

Angryangy, the Saj situation is weird, like yesterday he was shocking, but before that his World Cup had been pretty decent with his eco rate about 4.6 and taking wickets, he was brilliant against Jayasuriya, which was extra positive because of the bashing he took in 2006. Saj atm isn't good enough, but I still have a gut instinct that in say 2 years he could be really good, his improvement from that Sri Lanka series to now has been quite incredible. In the team now? No. In the future? Maybe.
