Matthew Hayden quits cricket

Jaques should get the spot over Hughes imo, so he can have match practice before the Ashes. Although, I'm not claiming the SA tour is a place where we will be trialling players etc, it will be really tough and we will need to win so we will want our best team and I think that best team has Jaques in it instead of Hughes, for now.

Feelin Blue? added 0 Minutes and 49 Seconds later...

I don't think he is. Just an example of people jumping on the bandwagon, not sure Lee knows that Warner has never played a Sheffield Shield game, Warner's clearly at the bottom of the list when it comes to the Test side. I reckon even the 2 guys that bat at 3 are ahead of Warner, especially considering Warner doesn't even open in 4 Day cricket. I'd like to see Warner in the ODi and T20 sides permanently though, be really entertaining.

Yeah, it's a real joke when I all of a sudden hear people saying "Warner for the Ashes" etc etc.

Sad to see another champion Aussie player walking away from the game. He is easily the best opening batsman in the last 10 years and one of the best openers ever. Anyway goodluck to him and thanks for all the memories Haydos.

The name Phillip Hughes has been bandied about since the news broke of Hayden's retirement:

Since Phil Jaques is only just coming back from surgery, he will probably play in South Africa.
It's been around for a couple of months now mate. His form must have just reached English shores today.

Shame to see him retire. He was a fantastic player. One of the best of this era and one of Australia's best of all time.

I think that Rodgers should get the gig.

Australia is going to miss one of their best openers. Its sad that Hayden has retired :(

To bad for a great cricketer and one of the best Aussie opener to retire so shamefully.Salute to an Aussie Legend:hpraise

Sad to see a destroyer of new ball attacks leave. It is really saddening for me when such dominant players fail towards the latter end of their carreers...I don't know why it just is. Hopefully he will continue to contribute to Aussies Cricket still in some way as his mentality in Test Cricket is priceless.

Well played Matthew Hayden.

Probably. He's retired from cricket, and the IPL isn't cricket. ;)

By saying this, you mean County cricket is also not Cricket!
Because some players do play in county after leaving international arena.
:p

Anyway apart from joke such a sad news.I am definitely going to miss one of the world finest opening batsman.
Good luck Hayden.

Mathew Hayden was a sort of warrior figure for the Australian Team...

I was having a dig at how bad the IPL is.

well IPL is more about money..and has less focus on things which a cricket game requires like Good quality Pitches...Stadiums.
